History
Corban has its roots in Phoenix, Arizona
where, in 1935, it began as a Bible institute.
Relocating to California in 1946, the college
changed its name to Western Baptist Bible
College and operated there until moving to
Oregon in 1969.
In 1955, the College received degreegranting
status from the State of California
Department of Education. In 1959, it
received national accreditation as a Bible
college by the American Association of
Bible Colleges. In 1968, it was regionally
accredited and after moving to Oregon was
accredited by the Northwest Commission
on Colleges and Universities. Over the years,
the College has transitioned from a Bible
college to a comprehensive college offering
programs in biblical studies, the liberal arts,
and professional studies.
Library
In addition to 110,000 titles and 575
current periodical subscriptions on location,
Corban’s membership in the Oregon Private
Academic Library Link (OPALL) provides
access to an additional 450,000 titles and
600,000 volumes. The library and its users
also have access to over 11,000 full-text
journals in electronic format. The library
houses the Prewitt/Allen Archaeological
Museum, a collection of Middle East
artifacts, unique on the West Coast.
In 2005 the name of the college was
changed to Corban in order to enhance
our ability to reach out to all evangelical
churches and at the same time to present
our Baptist heritage in a positive manner.
The name, a biblical word meaning “a gift
dedicated to God,” and motto, “Dedicating
Heart and Mind to God,” reflect the mission
of the college.
Corban College & Graduate School
2008 Men’s Soccer Outlook
Warrior men’s soccer looks to rebound as vets and new talent combine.
Last year’s Corban men’s soccer squad fell
below expectations with a sub .500 season. For
2008, head coach Dave Irby wants his troops
to zero in on the basics and the immediate
assignment at hand.
Last year we didn’t meet our goals, so this
time we’re keeping it simple,” said Irby. “Our
focus is one practice and one game at a time.”
The third-year head coach is cultivating this new
mentality among 14 returning players, including
six veteran starters from a year ago, plus the
addition of two transfers and five freshmen
players.
The Warriors lost five key seniors,
including three-time NAIA honorable mention
All-American Caleb Louvier from 2007’s crew,
but Irby sees the potential for a more versatile
and deeper line up. “Last year we relied a lot
on Caleb,” said Irby. “This time we don’t have
that one player that stands out, but there are a
number of strong players who appear ready to
contribute, so our depth will be a positive for
us.”
On the Defense
“I think we’ll be very solid defensively,”
said Irby, “and a veteran goal keeper of course
is part of that.” Irby is referring to fourth-year
keeper Aaron Franklin (SR, 5-10, 170, Red
Bluff, Calif.) who returns with just under 1,000
minutes in the net from a year ago. Franklin will
be supported at the position by rookie Anthony
Darling (FR, 5-10, 180, Lebanon, Ore.).
Experience multiplies in the backfield, as
the Warriors will draw upon the second team
all-conference expertise of Mark Mendenhall
(JR, 6-3, 185, Windsor, Calif.) and veteran
workhorse Daniel Steffen (SR, 5-11, 156,
Oregon City, Ore.). Fellow seniors Mark
Schubert (SR, 5-11, 165, Yakima, Wash.) and
John Kazmierski (SR, 5-9, 150, Salem, Ore.) are
a pair of capable veterans Corban will count on
heavily as well. Mendenhall, Steffen, Schubert
and Kazmierski combined to give the Warriors
over 4,200 minutes and 54 starts in 2007.
Returning for his second season with 12
starts as a defender is David Anderson (SO,
6-2, 160, Salem, Ore.), and Irby sees further
quality depth protecting the goal and redirecting
the action coming from Dakota Wesleyan
University transfer Kaleb Herring (JR, 6-1,
195, JR, Waco, Texas) and newcomers Nolan
Dempster (FR, 6-0, 177, Hillsboro, Ore.) and
Jonathan Anderson (FR, 5-11, 156, Salem,
Ore.). Collin Box (SO, 5-9, 145, Salem, Ore.)
played considerably as a freshmen, but an injury
leaves his playing status as a question mark for
the coming season.
Covering the Midfield
The Warrior midfield may be a realm
where versatile players will swing from both
the back and the forward areas. Four-year
playmaker Fernando Karczeski (SR, 5-8, 150,
Curitiba, Brazil) returns to the midfield with high
experience and potential offensively, logging 13
starts, more than 1,000 minutes and three goals
from a year ago.
Back is Travis Wells (SO, 5-11, 160,
Springfield, Ore.) who is expected to start at
outside midfield for Corban, while transfer
Jared Rust (JR, 6-0, 185, Palo Cedro, Calif.)
brings collegiate experience and productivity
from two seasons at Simpson University, and
should be a prominent figure in the center
midfield position for Corban. A trio of returners
Justin Lucia (SR, 5-8, 160, Anchorage, Alaska),
Parker Reed (SO, 5-8, 150, Auburn, Wash.) and
Aaron Paulson (SO, 5-10, 145, St. Helens, Ore.)
all logged time in the midfield last year.
Irby expects rookie Seth Overby (FR, 6-
1, 195, Gresham, Ore.) to see outside midfield
action, and fellow frosh Jonathan Johnson
(FR, 5-9, 146, Dallas, Ore.) will further contend
for minutes at the outside middle. Other players
who could swing into midfield roles include
Schubert, Kazmierski, Dempster, Steffen, and
Herring.
Attacking Upfront
Tyler Grove (SR, 6-1, 195, North Marion,
Ore.) prepares for his fourth year up front in the
forward position for Corban, and offers starting
experience along with second-year player
Ayouba Moussa (SO, 6-3, 175, Niger, Africa),
who has offensive talent.
The Warriors will give Rob Saffeels (JR,
6-3, 180, Salem, Ore.) and Michael Cowan
(FR, 5-11, 180, Salem, Ore.) the opportunity
with their athleticism to make an impact at the
forward position. Wells could see some time
upfront as well, noted Irby.
Corban is picked to finish second in
the North Division of the Cascade Collegiate
Conference. “The team is working hard,
chemistry seems to be very good, and the
players are enjoying one another,” said Irby.
“We have the potential to be a playoff team.”
Dave Irby
Head Coach
Dave Irby returns for
his third year as head
coach of the Warriors
after guiding Corban
to the NAIA Region I
Tournament for the first
time in eight seasons in
2006.
Two seasons ago, Dave led Corban to
a berth in the NAIA Region I Tournament, as
the Warriors won their final three games of
the regular season by a combined 15 goals
(17-2) en route to meeting fellow conference
member Concordia in the opening round of
the post-season tournament.
Prior to his collegiate coaching return,
Dave spent six seasons (1999-2005) as head
boys’ varsity coach at Blanchet Catholic High
School in Salem, where he led the Cavaliers
to back-to-back league co-championships
in 2003 and 2004. Dave was named
Tri-Rivers League Coach of the Year, as
Blanchet advanced to the state quarterfinals
in 2004. The Cavaliers earned the league
Sportsmanship Award for three straight
seasons with Dave at the helm.
Dave has also served as head coach of
the Premier Developmental League’s (PDL)
Cascade Surge from 1997-2000 before
transitioning into management with the team
in 1999. Under Dave, Cascade advanced to
the PDL Western Conference Playoffs in 1997.
As president, the Surge advanced to the
playoffs four straight seasons, while winning
back-to-back Northwest Division Titles. The
team won the league’s Fair Play award in 2003
and 2005.
Before moving to the Northwest, Dave
spent five seasons at Concordia University
(1988-89 and 1994-96) in Irvine, California,
where the Eagles’ program set a record for
most wins in a season with eight.
Prior to Concordia, Dave spent four seasons
(1977-80) at Azusa Pacific University (APU) in
Azusa, California, as head coach of the men’s
soccer program. Dave was named SCIAC and
NAIA District IV Coach of the Year twice as he
guided the Cougars to a 46-26-5 record and
three NAIA playoff appearances in his four
years at APU.
Dave has also coached Christian
collegiate and pro All-Star teams on over
twenty international soccer ministry trips,
including a 2003 mission’s trip to Sudan
where the Cascade Surge played the Sudanese
National team to a 1-1 tie.
Dave earned his Bachelor of Arts degree
in social science and physical education from
Azusa Pacific University in 1976, and aquired
his Master of Arts degree in teaching from
the University of La Verne. Dave’s soccer
credentials include a U.S. Soccer “A” Coaching
License, which is the highest license in the
United States and is recognized world-wide.
Dave currently resides in Salem with
his wife, Susan, and their three children
(Nathan, Ryan, & Hayley). Dave and his family
currently attend Morning Star Community
Church where he and his wife are involved in a
Morning Star community group.
Brett Bentley
Assistant Coach
Brett Bentley begins his
first year as an assistant
to the men’s program,
after playing and working
overseas in Germany as a
missionary.
Brett manned the
net for the Warriors for two seasons (2004-
05) and saw action in 33 games, including 29
starts. In 2,925-plus minutes in goal, Brett
allowed a combined 77 goals and made 198
saves. Brett’s Goals Against Average (GAA)
ranks in the all-time Top 10 list career-wise in
Warrior men’s soccer history.
After graduation, Brett played one
summer for the Salem-based Cascade Surge of
the Premier Development League (PDL). After
appearing in one game (65 minutes), Brett
moved to Germany to work play for Athletes
for Christ, a soccer organization that uses
soccer as a ministry tool. Following a year
overseas, Brett return to the states and helped
coach at both the high school and collegiate
levels.
This past summer, Brett returned to
the Surge organization as a player/coach and
appeared in seven games between the pipes.
In 554 minutes played, Brett allowed a mere
2007 Season Summary
After advancing to its first regional
tournament in eight seasons, second-year
head coach Dave Irby and the Warriors
went through what some could call a
“rebuilding year.”
Following a pair of home victories over
Great Falls (3-1) and first-year conference
member Northwest Christian (6-0) to open
the season, the Warriors made its first trip
to Southern California since 1997. Taking
part in the annual Cougar Classic hosted
by perennial NAIA powerhouse Azusa
Pacific, Corban dropped a pair of games
to nationally-ranked opponents. In the
tournament opener, the Warriors fell to
Westmont, 4-1, before losing a heart-breaker
to the eventual national champion Azusa
Pacific, 2-0.
After returning to Oregon, Corban
would go unbeaten over its next two games
thanks to a victory over Cascade (4-3) and
a hard-fought double-overtime tie with The
College of Idaho (0-0). The Warriors would
struggle over its next four games going 0-3-
1, as they were outscored 9-3 over that span
that included another conference tie with
Evergreen (1-1).
Once the calendar rolled over into
October, Corban put together another mini
two-game winning streak that included
defending the Capitol Cup with a 3-1 victory
over cross-town rival Willamette. Despite
winning two games in the span of three
days, Corban would succumb to another
four-game losing streak in which the Warrior
lost by a mere goal three times.
On the final weekend of the regular
season, Corban defeated Northwest (2-1)
before dropping its final game of the season,
4-0, to Evergreen en route to finishing with
an overall win-loss record of 6-10-2.
Senior midfielder Caleb Louvier led
the team in scoring with 19 points each, as
he was named to the All-Conference and
All-Regional 1 st teams before earning NAIA
All-American honorable mention.
Louvier ended the season with a teamhigh
eight goals, while freshman Brendan
McCornack handed out a team-high four
assists.
Sophomore Mark Mendenhall
anchored the Warriors’ defense and was
named to the all-conference 2 nd team, while
junior Fernando Karczeski and freshman
Collin Box earned all-conference honorable
mention.
Sophomore Aaron Franklin and junior
James DelCastillo split time between the
pipes, as Franklin manned the net 55.1%
of the time. Franklin ended the season
with a team-best 73 saves, while DelCastillo
recorded 40 saves and a team-low 1.81
Goals Against Average.
On the career list, Louvier moved into
the top five in points (89 – 5 th all-time) and
goals (35 – 5 th all-time), while ranking in the
top 10 in assists (19- 7 th all-time). Meanwhile,
fellow senior Joshua Crain cracked the top
10 in career points (62 – 9 th all-time) and
goals (26 – tied for 8 th all-time).
In 11 seasons as a collegiate head
coach, Irby has accumulated an overall winloss
record of 81-108-15 that includes a
win-loss mark of 15-17-5 in two seasons at
Corban.
