Corban College & Graduate School Coaching Staff Justin Sherwood Head Coach Justin Sherwood returned to the Corban hardwood as head coach in 2002 after a stellar playing career from 1989-93. After inheriting an inexperienced squad in his initial campaign, Justin has taken the Warriors to new heights compiling an overall win-loss record of 98-119 in seven years that included a record-breaking season in 2004-05. His team was ranked No. 1 in the NAIA Division II top- 25 at the beginning of the 2004-05 season following a school-record 18-straight victories to begin the season. Having played a big part in the tradition of the men’s basketball program already, it is Justin’s goal to continue the trend. “Certainly it is my desire to continue the success of the coaches before me,” Justin said. “My goal is for the program to qualify for the NAIA tournament every year. I want to bring in students that will excel both academically and athletically while at Corban and lead successful Christian lives after graduating.” Justin began his collegiate coaching career at George Fox University where he was the first assistant from 1998-2002. He spent one season at Gladstone High School coaching the freshman boys and has worked various camps and clinics in Oregon and California for over a decade. As a collegiate player, he was twice a National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) All-American and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) all-district selection. The 6-foot-1 guard made things happen on both ends of the floor. Justin is ranked in the top five at Corban in career points (2,710) and 3-pointers made (464). He is third in career steals (274) and in the top ten in rebounds (712). “My goal for the players I coach at Corban is that they will enjoy their basketball experience as much as I enjoyed mine,” Justin said. Aside from coaching, Justin is also an assistant professor at Corban in the Business Department. He met his wife, Jenni, while a student at Corban and they have a son, Trey, and daughter, Reese. Justin and his wife enjoy spending time with their family and playing golf. Don Hiebenthal Assistant Coach Don enters his eighth season on the coaching staff and is a familiar face when it comes to Warrior men’s basketball. Don, like Coach Sherwood, is back at his alma mater as a coach following a standout career at Western Baptist as a player. Don played basketball at Western Baptist from 1975-79 and is still among the career leaders in several categories. He is in the top five in career points scored (2,460), points per game (20.3), free throws made (534), assists (564), and steals (383). Don was a NAIA and NCCAA All-American, and as a senior led the nation in scoring, averaging 29.3 points per game. Spending 17 years coaching basketball and volleyball at Liberty Gardens Christian School, Don understands the opportunity sports provide. “My philosophy is to strive to get the full potential out of each individual, not only in athletics, but in life.” Don, who works for Campus Care at Corban, and his wife, Julie, have a daughter, Trisha, and son, Justin. Don enjoys collecting old things – coins, cards, toys, furniture – and anything that has to do with athletics. Ray Reid Assistant Coach Ray returns for his sixth season with the men’s basketball coaching staff and will continue to work side-by-side with Sherwood and Hiebethal. Ray arrives at Corban with a wealth of head coaching experience, which includes 4 years as head men’s soccer coach at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, and two seasons as an assistant men’s soccer coach at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif. On the basketball side of coaching, Ray has five seasons with the Warriors and two seasons as an assistant coach at North Salem High School. “I became a Christian through the influence of a soccer coach,” Ray said. “I love small college basketball and the coaches and players at Corban” Ray and his wife, Jeanne, have three children (Marty, Lori, & Jamie). Ray, who is an attorney at law with the Law Offices of David Hilgemann, enjoys college basketball, golf, reading, and is a baseball statistics guru. 10 Warriors
