President’s Message 

Dr. Richard Collings 

This will come as no surprise, but I don’t have a MySpace 

page. Nor do I have a page on Facebook. There’s no profile 

online anywhere that will tell you my favorite movies, favorite 

books or favorite songs. If you want to know these things you will 

have to ask me in person. Or maybe scan the shelves in my study. 

You can tell a lot about people if you know these things. They are 

cultural cues to who they are and what they value. In that same 

vein, you can tell a lot about a college by its students, whether 

they’re still on campus in the midst of earning a degree or out in the 

world making a living (and probably a difference) doing what they 

learned to do at Wayne State. 

When I look at the achievements of Wayne State students and 

faculty each year there’s no mistaking the profile that emerges. 

From community service in our region and top awards at skills 

competitions to prestigious conferences and departmental honors, 

you can see the hands-on quality of a Wayne State education, the 

work of our professors and their dedication to the Wayne State ideal 

of going beyond the typical hour in the classroom. 

Wayne State’s professors encourage students from many 

backgrounds and interests to put their knowledge to the test at 

events around the U.S. You will not find a commitment on this scale 

at larger universities. But it’s built into an education here at Wayne 

State. And it would not be possible without your generous support. 

Your support helps us cover the educational costs of students who 

otherwise might not have the means to afford an education. Your 

support allows us to send students to competitions, conferences 

and seminars. Your support gives us the flexibility to make 

education more than time spent at a desk. Most importantly, your 

support encourages creativity and innovation in our programs. 

The past year included many examples of student and faculty 

success. Seven construction management students earned first- 

place honors at a state leadership and skills conference. Two of 

our honors students presented at the national honors conference. 

They were the only two students chosen from the entire state of 

Nebraska. Professor Tami Worner received the George Rebensdorf 

Teaching Excellence Award from the Nebraska State College 

System. A volleyball star earned the college’s first All-American 

honor in her sport. And the women’s cross country team earned its 

first conference championship. 

The college also expanded several successful programs. Wayne 

State was granted approval by the Higher Learning Commission 

to offer its Master of Business Administration degree completely 

online in the fall of 2007. The college also extended its highly 

successful learning community format to Grand Island for the 

fall 2007 semester, expanding the college’s innovative Masters 

of Science in Education: Curriculum and Instruction program 

to the western edge of its 46-county service area. Wayne State 

began its learning community format in 2003 in Fremont and 

Sioux City/South Sioux City. From an initial group of 127 students, 

the program has grown to more than 640 students who have 

completed or are currently completing program requirements. 

This is hardly the extent of our profile of success, but a solid 

picture should be coming into focus. Wayne State differentiates 

itself from other colleges by virtue of the personal education 

it provides and the opportunities for enrichment built into the 

college’s curriculum. Your donations, large and small, help make 

success part of the Wayne State College culture. 

And for the record, my favorite movies are Godfather (and 

Godfather II), Last of the Mohicans and Dr. Strangelove. My 

favorite songs are “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” (Crosby, Stills, Nash 

& Young), “Yesterday” (The Beatles) and “Heart of Gold” (Neil 

Young). And my favorite books are The Magus (John Fowles), A 

Confederacy of Dunces (John K. O'Toole) and The Ginger Man 

(J.P. Donleavy).

Board of Trustees 

The Board of Trustees of the Wayne State Foundation held its annual meeting Sept 28, 2007, 

in the Gardner Business Building on the Wayne State campus. The trustees traveled to 

campus from across the United States to participate in the annual meeting because they are 

committed to positively affecting the college through the work of the Wayne State Foundation. 

Their contribution of time and treasure along with yours enhance the foundation’s ability to 

strategically assist the college achieve its mission. 

Thank you for making this another outstanding fiscal year. 

• Received cash gifts and pledges of $2 million. 

• Assets grew by 19% to $15.1 million. 

• Endowment grew $1.4 million to $10.6 million. 

• Endowment earned 16.5% return on investments. 

• Scholarship awards totaled $668,678 to 618 students. 

• 3,642 alumni made gifts to the foundation and the percentage of 

alumni who gave increased by 1%. 

The Wayne State Foundation has an important role to play in the success of Wayne State College 

and its students through its annual distributions to the college for scholarships, faculty and 

staff grants, capital projects and other special initiatives. This annual Honor Roll of Donors 

recognizes those who have made this support possible. It is with enduring gratitude that we

Vice President for Development and Executive Director 

of the Wayne State Foundation 

The Wayne State Foundation experienced another exceptional year in fund raising and as a result 

was able to directly help more students and to accomplish other strategic initiatives it shares 

with Wayne State College. The foundation’s important work enhancing the learning environment 

and helping students through scholarship support is possible because of the supporters listed 

within this publication. 

Providing scholarships to Wayne State College students has always been a primary focus of the 

foundation and on Sept. 27, 2007 the first annual scholarship luncheon was held in the Frye 

Conference Suite in the student center on the Wayne State campus. Scholarship donors were 

invited to join their scholarship recipients for lunch and a brief program that featured students 

who spoke about the impact of their scholarship and their education at Wayne State. Amy Cech 

of Howells, Neb., and Brandon Wiebelhaus of Phoenix, Ariz., spoke about how their scholarships 

helped them focus on academics and have only two jobs instead of three. Brandon, a senior, 

spoke enthusiastically about what a great fit Wayne State was for him after attending two other 

colleges. He plans to enroll in a masters program at Wayne State next year. 

To the delight of those present, a special rendition of “I Love Life” was sung by alumnus 

and foundation trustee, Dr. Dwain Petersen ’55. Dwain regularly sings the Alma Mater at 

commencement by personal request of Dr. Richard Collings, Wayne State president. Dwain is a 

professor emeritus, Minnesota State University, Mankato.

on page XX and the new scholarships established during the past fiscal year, listed on page 8.

Florence Ferrin 

The Circle of Excellence is the highest recognition given to donors for their contributions during the year. It is 

reserved for alumni, friends and businesses who contributed $100,000 or more during the reporting period of 

this Honor Roll of Donors. 

Members of the Circle of Excellence receive all of the benefits and privileges of belonging to the Presidents 

Society. Upon initial entry into the Circle, they receive special recognition in the Honor Roll of Donors. 

Florence Kindler Griffin Ferrin 

Florence Ferrin is a special friend to the Wayne 

State Foundation staff and has maintained her close 

connections to Wayne State College since her graduation 

in 1942. She remembers fondly her college years living 

in Neihardt Hall and working in Dean Hahn’s office at the 

Campus Training School. She was promoted to a position 

in the registrar’s office her senior year. 

Florence’s career began in Creighton teaching 

high school, but she spent the majority of her career, 26 

years, employed by Red River Army Depot in Texarkana, 

Texas, where she was responsible for the subsistence 

fund at a time when there were 11,000 military troops 

at the depot. She transferred to salvage to collect, track 

and approve shipments of millions of dollars worth of 

Army surplus from World War II and her final assignment 

was as a management analyst responsible for the 

development of emergency planning. She married the 

late Charles B. Griffin in 1943. They traveled extensively 

and visited all 50 of the United States. 

Florence has funded the Charles B. Griffin and 

Florence Kindler Griffin Scholarship.

Bebee, Jeanne M. Gardner, Kirk N. Gardner and David J. Gardner. 

The Gardner Foundation

Wayne State Service-learning Project 

Combines Ecology and Elbow Grease 

More than 170 Wayne State College students participated in a service learning field trip on Sept. 7, 2007 to Ponca State Park. 

The field trip was part of the BIO 110 Biology Concepts course, the introductory biology course for freshmen science and pre-health 

majors. The four faculty members who teach sections of the course this semester led the trip: Drs. Mark Hammer, Barbara Hayford, 

Shawn Pearcy and Mark Zink. 

While at the park, students spent half of their day learning about the ecology of the park and the environmental issues related to 

the Missouri River. Ponca State Park is located on a portion of the Missouri River that is designated Wild and Scenic by the National 

Park Service, and is home to three of Nebraska's threatened and endangered species. Wayne State College students participated 

in learning activities presented by college faculty and by Jeff Fields, Ponca State Park superintendent, Steven Rasmussen, District 

Forester for the Nebraska Forest Service, and Gene Bormann of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. 

Students spent the other half of their day weather-proofing cabins and other structures at the park. Ponca State Park relies on 

volunteers to help maintain the park, and the Wayne State College students made a significant contribution to that effort. Students 

applied 50 gallons of stain to 12 cabins, 50 picnic tables and other wooden campground structures. 

Funding for this project came through a Wayne State College Service-Learning sub-grant provided by the Midwest Consortium 

for Service-Learning and made possible through the Corporation for National Service under the Learn and Serve America: Higher 

Education grant program.

Honors Students Among Nation’s Best 

Wayne State College honors students Leann Bolte of McCool Junction and 

Ashley Villarreal of Fremont presented the results of their honors projects at the 

National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) convention Oct. 31-Nov. 4, 2007 in 

Denver. Bolte and Villarreal were the only Nebraska students invited to present at 

this year’s conference. 

One hundred honors students nationwide were invited to present at the 

conference via a competitive process that generated more than 200 applications 

including those from the Honors Programs at Syracuse University, University 

of Puerto Rico, Mercyhurst College, Columbia College, Kent State University, 

University of Maine, Franklin Pierce College and Gallaudet University. 

“I am delighted and proud that Ashley and Leann had this opportunity to 

present their work and meet honors students from throughout the U.S.,” said 

James O’Donnell, Dean of the WSC School of Arts and Humanities and Director 

of the WSC Honors Program. “Because this was also our first time in sending 

students to the conference, I am also excited about the future opportunities this 

organization will provide for our Honors students.” 

Bolte’s honors project, supervised by WSC professor Dr. Shawn Pearcy 

and titled “The Effect of Drugs on Wound Healing,” examined the effect of

pharmaceutical drugs and their impact on repairing epithelial cells after injury through the use of cell 

culture and microscopic analyzing techniques. Majoring in biology and chemical health sciences, Bolte 

will also be receiving a coaching endorsement upon graduation from WSC. While at Wayne State College 

she has been involved with Habitat for Humanity, Haven House, Science Club, Vice President of the 

Students Against Destructive Decisions Chapter, Cardinal Key, Alpha Lambda Delta, and Phi Kappa Phi 

National Honor Societies. She is also in the Rural Health Opportunities Program and upon graduation will 

begin medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. 

Villarreal’s honors project, supervised by WSC professor Dr. Randy Bertolas and titled “A 

Comparative Geographic Study of Attitudes and Actions toward Recycling at Selected Midwestern 

Colleges and Universities,” investigated the effects of geographic location and academic interests on 

environmental attitudes among college students. Villarreal is pursuing a teaching field endorsement in 

health and physical education K-12, and a subject endorsement in geography education. Villarreal has 

been a member of Pi Gamma Mu and Gamma Theta Upsilon honor societies, and is vice president of the 

Physical Education Professionals Club. Prior to attending WSC in the spring of 2005, she spent six weeks 

on a mission/traveling experience in Taiwan, a country that no longer uses plastic bags in stores and 

where significant recycling takes place. 

Construction Management Students Build Solid Reputation 

Students in the Wayne State College construction management program competed at the Nebraska 

Skills USA state leadership and skills conference March 28, 2007 in Columbus, Neb. Dan Belford of 

Papillion took first place in cabinetmaking. Zach Hill of Lincoln earned first place in carpentry, Seth 

Teggerstrom of Stromsberg came in second, and Ryan Knight of Omaha took third. Drew Peckenpaugh 

of Omaha, Dan Hayes of Decatur, Tim Comstock of Norfolk and Grant Ross of Omaha took first place in 

Teamworks. Shawn Vinson of Osmond earned first place honors in masonry. Matt Skillstad of Norfolk 

earned sixth place in architectural drawing. 

First-place winners from the Nebraska Skills USA conference competed at the National Skills USA 

leadership and skills conference June 25-29, 2007 in Kansas City, Mo. Zach Hill of Lincoln finished 

ninth in carpentry. Dan Belford of Papillion came in sixteenth in cabinetmaking. 

Professor Worner Receives Teaching Excellence Award 

Tamara Worner, associate professor of mathematics at Wayne State College, received the George 

Rebensdorf Teaching Excellence Award from the Nebraska State College System 

on May 5, 2007 at the undergraduate commencement ceremony. Worner excels 

in the classroom, her profession and in the community. 

Each year the Nebraska State College System names a recipient of the 

Rebensdorf Teaching Excellence Award from one of the three state colleges— 

Wayne State, Chadron State and Peru State. Several Wayne State College 

faculty members have won this statewide award, including Clif Ginn, Cornell 

Runestad, Russ Rasmussen, Ken Halsey, Pearl Hansen, Deborah Whitt, Jean 

Karlen, Mary Ettel and Jason Karsky. 

The Wayne State College nominee for the George Rebensdorf Teaching 

Excellence Award also receives the State National Bank Teaching Excellence 

Tamara Worner 

Award in the amount of $1,000. Wayne State College Vice President for Development and Executive 

Director of the Wayne State Foundation Phyllis Conner presented both awards to Worner. 

WSC Unveils New Accredited Online MBA Program 

Wayne State College was granted approval to offer its Master of Business Administration degree 

completely online in the fall of 2007. Approval was granted for the 30-credit-hour program by the Higher 

Learning Commission (HLC). 

“This program gives working professionals an opportunity to advance their careers by earning this 

respected degree without having to spend time and money driving to a campus," said Dr. Craig Kinsella, 

director of Continuing Education at Wayne State College. 

The program has no face-to-face classes to attend and can be completed in two years. The MBA 

program is also accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE). 

“Students not only develop the skills needed to become successful, but also how to apply these 

skills in day-to-day business operations. Excellent support and assistance from an experienced and

Wayne State Expands Learning Community Format 

Wayne State extended its highly successful learning community format to Grand Island for the 

fall 2007 semester, expanding the college’s innovative Masters of Science in Education: Curriculum 

and Instruction program to the western edge of its 46-county service area. The newest learning 

community site, Grand Island, joins the Blair, Fremont, Neligh, Norfolk, Sioux City and South Sioux City 

communities in attracting education professionals from all over Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and South 

Dakota for the most innovative masters program in the college’s region. 

Wayne State began its learning community format in 2003 in Fremont and Sioux City/South Sioux 

City. From an initial group of 127 students, the program has grown to more than 640 students who 

have completed or are currently completing requirements for the program. Retention until graduation is 

more than 95 percent, eclipsing national masters in education program completion rates, which range 

from 38 percent to 83 percent. 

Schroeder Collects First-Ever All-American Volleyball Honor 

Emily Schroeder of Wayne State College became the school's first-ever 

All-American in volleyball during the 2006 season, earning Second Team 

All-American honors by the American Volleyball Coaches Association and 

Daktronics. 

Schroeder set a single season record in 2006 with 599 kills, an average 

of 4.47 kills per game to rank third in the NSIC and 25th in NCAA Division II. 

She led the NSIC in blocking at 1.54 bpg, which ranked 4th in NCAA Division II. 

During the 2006 season, Schroeder was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the 

Week twice and was selected the Nebraska NCAA Division II Player of the Week 

five times.

Other honors for the 2006 season for Schroeder included NSIC All- 

Academic Team, ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District VII Second Team, Daktronics All-North 

Central Region First Team, Northern Sun Conference First Team, AVCA All-North Central Region First Team 

and captain of the Omaha World Herald All-Nebraska Division II Volleyball Team. 

Women Capture First NSIC Cross Country Championship 

Wayne State College won its first Northern Sun Conference women's cross country championship 

Oct. 21, 2006, in St. Paul, Minn., as the Wildcats outscored the University of Mary 36-49 for the team 

title. Three Wildcat runners placed in the top 10 to earn All-Conference honors. Megan Zavorka of 

Torrington, Wyo., placed second overall with a time of 23:30 on the 6,000-meter course. Melissa Schmit 

of Randolph came in third at 24:07 and Sarah Thomsen of Wahoo finished eighth in 24:48. 

WSC head coach Marlon Brink was named the NSIC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year for 

leading the Wildcats to the team title. 

“Our team ran up to its potential,” Brink said. “We peaked at the right time and having three All- 

Conference finishers was exciting. The team reached its goal of winning the conference championship.

Year Nebraska Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NAHPERD) 

Gala Celebration on Oct. 27 in Lincoln. Each of the students was honored by WSC faculty 

as the “Major of the Year” in their disciplines. 

Health, Human Performance and Sports Honors Three Students 

The Department of Health, Human Performance, and Sports (HHPS) at Wayne State College 

selected Connor Bramlet of West Point, Michaela Hegarty of Fremont and Nick Jarosh of Ankeny, 

Iowa, as "Major of the Year'' award winners this fall semester. The Nebraska Alliance of Health, 

Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NAHPERD) honored the three for excellence in physical 

education, exercise science and sport management during its 110-year gala celebration Oct. 27 

in Lincoln. 

Bramlet, formerly of Wheatland, Wyo., is a senior physical education major with a coaching 

endorsement. Bramlet participates in baseball. He has been named as an Academic All 

Conference (NSIC) and All Conference (NSIC) student. His name appears on the dean’s list for 

academic achievement. He is a recipient of the Pete Chapman Scholarship at WSC. His wife is 

Allison Bramlet. 

Hegarty is an exercise science major with a coaching endorsement. She is the daughter of 

Patrick and Lana Hegarty and Renee Kassmeier. Hegarty has been listed on the dean's list for 

academic achievement. 

Jarosh is a sport management major with a minor in business administration. He is the son

Phi Beta Lambda Student Places in Computer Competition 

Adam Krause of Peru placed tenth in computer applications at the 2007 Phi Beta Lambda National 

Leadership Conference in Chicago. Krause is Phi Beta Lambda chapter president at Wayne State and 

a vice president of finance for Phi Beta Lambda at the state level. Phi Beta Lambda is a state and

Cornerstone Society

The Cornerstone Society was established in 1998 to recognize cumulative 

contributions to the Wayne State Foundation of $10,000 and above. It honors 

donors for their loyal and continuous support with a major recognition wall in 

the student center atrium. It states: “With each gift comes an ever-growing 

bond with the college, faculty and students and the knowledge that your 

generosity is significantly impacting Wayne State College.” 

The Cornerstone Society was developed to allow the college to properly 

acknowledge donors as they move to higher categories of giving through the

The Heritage Society was established to 

recognize and honor, during their lifetimes, 

the alumni and friends whose vision and 

generosity move them to support Wayne 

State College through an estate gift to the 

Wayne State Foundation. 

Membership in the Heritage Society is 

open to alumni and friends who have 

made arrangements for a future gift to 

the foundation through one or more of the 

following: 

• Specific provision in their will 

• Creation of a charitable trust 

• Life insurance policy 

• Gift of real estate 

• Charitable gift annuity 

As a Heritage Society member, you’ll have 

the satisfaction of knowing that you’re 

continuing our tradition by providing 

financial support to ensure the future 

strength of Wayne State College. Members 

receive acknowledgement including an 

engraved nameplate on the Heritage Society 

wall plaque in the Student Center and a
