The Inexhaustibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Different Dimensions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Quran<br />
The Quran is a book which has brought about <strong>the</strong> greatest <strong>and</strong> most astounding changes in <strong>the</strong><br />
history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human being. It possesses an everlasting vitality <strong>and</strong> shines continuously<br />
throughout every age <strong>of</strong> history. With <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ound insight it exhibits in legislating for <strong>the</strong><br />
human being <strong>and</strong> providing for all his genuine <strong>and</strong> natural needs, it is <strong>the</strong> richest <strong>and</strong> most<br />
abundant resource available to <strong>the</strong> human being. The comprehensive scheme proposed by<br />
Islam rests on a perception <strong>of</strong> his primordial nature. With a realism that is all its own, Islam<br />
analyzes <strong>the</strong> human being as he is <strong>and</strong> assumes a determining role in all <strong>the</strong> dimensions <strong>of</strong> his<br />
life. This is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reasons for <strong>the</strong> lasting validity <strong>of</strong> Islam.<br />
Taking into account <strong>the</strong> extensive developments that have occurred in science, bringing in<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir wake fundamental <strong>and</strong> irreversible changes, <strong>the</strong> characteristics that set Islam apart from<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r schools <strong>of</strong> thought must be examined with great care.<br />
Were <strong>the</strong> principles <strong>and</strong> regulations <strong>of</strong> Islam to belong to <strong>the</strong> same category as those <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
schools, <strong>the</strong> ascending level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> human beings would necessarily invalidate<br />
<strong>the</strong>m.<br />
But we see exactly <strong>the</strong> opposite is true. In circles that concern <strong>the</strong>mselves with scientific <strong>and</strong><br />
legal problems, <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> Islam is stronger than ever before; it enjoys increasing prestige<br />
<strong>and</strong> receives more attention than at any o<strong>the</strong>r time.<br />
One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clear characteristics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Quran is that by means <strong>of</strong> a finite verbal form, it<br />
expresses an infinity <strong>of</strong> meaning that derives from <strong>the</strong> infinite knowledge <strong>of</strong> God. This is in<br />
contrast with all o<strong>the</strong>r books <strong>and</strong> writings where both <strong>the</strong> verbal form <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> meanings <strong>the</strong>y<br />
express are finite.<br />
Imam Sadiq, upon whom be peace, said to Hammad: " 'I swear by God that I am aware <strong>of</strong> all<br />
that is in <strong>the</strong> heavens <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth, <strong>and</strong> all that is in Paradise <strong>and</strong> hellfire.' Hammad <strong>the</strong>n<br />
looked at <strong>the</strong> Imam with astonishment, whereupon he continued: 'Oh Hammad, it is by means<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Book <strong>of</strong> God that I have this knowledge.' He <strong>the</strong>n recited this verse: 'On <strong>the</strong> day that<br />
We raise up a witness for every people from among <strong>the</strong>ir own messengers <strong>and</strong> bring you forth<br />
as a witness for this people. We have sent this great Quran to you to make plain <strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong><br />
all things <strong>and</strong> to be a source <strong>of</strong> guidance, mercy <strong>and</strong> glad tidings for <strong>the</strong> Muslims.' "[47]
