FIRST GRADE
OCTOBER 2012
First graders test balls
to find out which are
best at bouncing.
First grade science is off to a
great start! The girls were excited
to get their new science journals,
where they will keep all their
class work this year. The
students take ownership of their
journals and often look back on
what they have done in the past.
The journals won’t come home
until June, but drop by during
conferences if you want to look
at your daughter’s!
Our first unit of the year was
nutrition. We created healthy
meals based on USDA
guidelines. Next we sorted fruits
and vegetables and discussed
the plant parts we eat. We then
expanded our focus to how other
organisms get energy to grow and
survive. We acted out how energy
moves through the food chain
from the sun, to plants, and then
through various animals. We also
came up with food chains for the
foods we eat, and realized they all
begin with the sun! Finally, we
observed skulls from different
animals and figured out their diets
from their teeth. We sorted animals
into carnivores, herbivores and
omnivores, allowing us to practice
using a Venn diagram.
We are now beginning a unit
on balls and ramps. By exploring
with familiar toys, the girls will
learn simple physics concepts and
how to design an experiment.
Take Science Home!
* Dissect fruits to find the
seeds inside. How are
they different? How are
they the same? Then
enjoy a healthy snack!
* When having meals as
a family, brainstorm the
food chain from the sun
to what you’re eating.
* Ask your first grader to
show you how she
tested how well balls
bounce or roll.
Open Science - Fridays from 3:25-4:00
Any girl checked into the Tree House may come to the science lab to
help take care of the turtle, gecko, and snake, and then do other fun
science activities! (No extra fee or regular attendance needed.)
