Committee Reports Camping Committee In spite of the year’s economic circumstances, 2009 turned out to be an extremely encouraging one for the Horseshoe Scout Reservation, although not without some surprises. A significant increase in Boy Scout attendance, attributed to improved marketing of the values of both our traditional as well as our new programs, more than offset a drop in Cub summer resident camping, which is generally still regarded as a far less necessary Cub activity and one requiring far more parental commitment for the younger Scouts vs. other options. Based on maintaining a highlycompetitive pay scale, we saw over 50% summer staff retention, recognized by us as well as at Regional levels as a critical component of any successful camp. From a financial perspective, our reservation exceeded the one million dollar mark for total income in 2009. This included summer & weekend camping fees, trading post sales, easement investment fund pay-outs, sale of timber, farming leases, special events fees and other income streams developed and fine-tuned over the past few years. While a number of BSA camps across the country, some not too far away from us, are closing down due to lack of a long-term vision and commitment to that vision, the Horseshoe Scout Reservation remains vibrant and financially-viable. It has been and will continue to be your efforts that play a critical role for the Horseshoe Scout Reservation with your dedication to insuring the sustaining of successful program delivery and facilities operation while keeping camp affordable and accessible for our youth. The Chester County Council Camping Committee thanks the board and all its supporters and volunteers for a very successful year in 2009 and looks forward to your ongoing support in 2010 and beyond. In Scouting, Jim Bratcher Executive Vice-President - Camping Summer Camp hosted over 2,100 campers.
Committee Reports Development During 2009, the Development Department, with the leadership of many outstanding volunteers, directed the six special events below. In addition, the Planned Giving Committee served as co-host to the BSA National Endowment art tour at Longwood Gardens and our very own Jim McErlane hosted a successful Eagle Scout/Alumni gathering event to help kick-off the Boy Scouts of America 100 th anniversary. The Dick Vermeil Invitational Golf Tournament We have been privileged to have nationally renowned sports celebrity, Dick Vermeil, give the council an opportunity to conduct a golf tournament in his name for the past 17 years. Dick has remained committed and very much involved with the event since its inception. A very successful pre-tournament press event was held several weeks before the tournament that helped give added visibility to the event and to its sponsoring companies. The tournament functions with a high degree of enthusiasm. The day began with a brunch and concluded with a dinner and silent and live auctions. Over 30 celebrities participated this year. The net financial support from this event was $117,000. Over $42,000 contributed. Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner Mr. Gary W. Smith, one of the most significant contributors to the economic growth of Chester County, was selected to receive the coveted Chester County Council, BSA Distinguished Citizen Award. Gary is the Executive Director of the Chester County Economic Development Council. Gary was honored at the Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner (DCAD), which was held on May 13, 2009. The net financial support from this event was $44,500. Net support of $117,000 Pacesetter Dinner The Annual Pacesetter Dinner was held on April 28, 2009 at The Inn at Chester Springs in Exton, PA. The guest speaker was Kevin Reilly, former Philadelphia Eagles player, radio personality and motivational speaker. It was a tremendous success, raising $42,300 while identifying new friends and re- engaging former donors. Net support of $44,500.
