THEME 1.1.4 WOMANHOOD AND HONOUR<br />

It is for the pride that makes me feel more like a real woman<br />

A brave woman is honoured as an individual who can withstand<br />

hardships<br />

The pride <strong>of</strong> having a baby makes me feel like a real woman<br />

A real woman is someone whose shame has been removed by the<br />

ability to give birth<br />

Callister (1992:53) found that Mormon women expressed the cultural religious values, spirituality,<br />

self-discovery and the meaning <strong>of</strong> the childbirth experience as a process <strong>of</strong> mastery and learning about<br />

themselves. Childbirth was related to their ultimate destiny or reason for being ‘real women’.<br />

According to Finn (1994:32), the experience <strong>of</strong> labour pain was a source <strong>of</strong> discussion and pride<br />

among Euro-American women, who saw the childbirth experience as a “rite <strong>of</strong> passage to<br />

womanhood”.<br />

It is a family honour to reserve the bride price, a ritual that is part <strong>of</strong> the initiation ceremony to<br />

womanhood by being able to give birth. These traditional practices serve cultural, religious and<br />

economic purposes. These practices are prevalent in most African countries.<br />

1.1.5 Gratification and reward<br />

In addition to stoic conduct being meaningful and rewarding, the Mozambican women had a feeling <strong>of</strong><br />

gratification that was further supplemented by the joy <strong>of</strong> the newborn baby as a gift to them (see data<br />

display 41.1.5).<br />

THEME 1.1.5 GRATIFICATION: REWARD<br />

If I endure the pain experience, I have an inner feeling <strong>of</strong><br />

gratification<br />

In suffering, a woman anticipates a period <strong>of</strong> impending joy for<br />

receiving the baby<br />

I had an inner feeling <strong>of</strong> satisfaction for having accomplished the<br />

task <strong>of</strong> delivering the baby<br />

This pride makes me accept the baby as a reward that I have suffered<br />

for<br />

It is a rewarding experience because after the hard labour and pain, I<br />

finally had a reward “the baby” to make me feel happy<br />

I attach value to the baby<br />

The expectation <strong>of</strong> a reward makes an individual withstand the pain<br />

I have the knowledge that it is for a special gift I am suffering<br />

You really feel rewarded for having withstood the pain during<br />

labour<br />
