A Week of Sharing, Learning, and Fun
FOSS4G (Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial) has exploded in recent years and is a unique event that
brings together international developers of innovative Open software and solutions, face-to-face with users,
educators, and decision makers. Two full days hands-on workshops are always a highlight of a FOSS4G event, where
you will be able to learn directly from the software developers themselves. Of course the main program will be a
highlight, with speakers from all of the world dealing with topics of Open Source, Open Standards, and Open Data.
But the true highlight of any FOSS4G is the networking, whether it is at a social event at night, or breaking off into
a Birds of a Feather session in the afternoon, or a random meeting in the hallway of the venue; networking, sharing
of ideas, talking, discussing, is the true spirit of what makes a FOSS4G event special.
FOSS4G Seoul 2015 is a very special event as it is the first time that the international FOSS4G event will come to
Asia. Much thanks must be given to the local organizing team here in Seoul, who have been hard at work for over
a year planning this event. If you happen to see a local organizer or volunteer this week in person, be sure to thank
them for their passion, they really deserve it.
FOSS4G is a community where we can make friends, share laughs, learn, and talk passionately about what we love:
being Open. Open Source Software means of course that the source code is available, but being Open is much more
than just software, as you will see here at FOSS4G, where it also means opening your data, opening your standards,
opening your organization, and opening your mind to new ideas.
OSGeo (the Open Source Geospatial Foundation) exists to help promote the use and development of Open Source
geospatial software, and OSGeo has happily hosted the international FOSS4G event all over the world since back
in 2006. The journey of FOSS4G (Lausanne 2006, Victoria 2007, Cape Town 2008, Sydney 2009, Barcelona 2010,
Denver 2011, Nottingham 2013, Portland 2014) now comes to Asia for the first time, and you're a big part of it. How
exciting?!
I'm so very excited to see you all here at FOSS4G Seoul this week, to meet you, to share with you, to learn from you,
we will all learn together here. And we will make new friendships and connections, which are as important or more
than the Open software that we will learn as well.
Thank you to everyone for coming to FOSS4G Seoul! Have fun!
On behalf of OSGeo,
