TOOHEYS CUP
- 2015 -
FINALS WEEK 2 12th - 13th SEPTEMBER 2015

WEEKLY PREVIEW
Minor / Major Semi-Finals
By Matt Harris , CEO - Newcastle Rugby League
Week 1 of the Newcastle Rugby League Finals Series saw the exit of Central Newcastle leaving
four teams to battle for the Grand Final spot and a chance to claim the 2015 Tooheys Cup.
In last Saturday’s Elimination Semi-Final the Cessnock Goannas proved far too strong for Central
running out convincing 48 to 4 winners. Cessnock showed plenty of attacking flair and always
looked in control leading by 16 at the break. The young Goannas squad went on with the job
in the second half and should head into week 2 of the Finals Series with plenty of confidence.
Sunday’s Qualifying Semi-final was a much closer affair. Lakes United held a 2 game to nil
advantage heading into the game after 2 narrow victories during the home-and-away season.
The Seagulls looked like another win was on the cards after jumping out to a 10 nil lead mid-way
through the first half. Two early 2nd half tries to Macquarie cancelled out Lakes’ 8 point halftime
lead and gave the Scorpions a sniff of a long overdue finals victory. In a brutal battle Lakes
United grabbed back the lead with 20 to go and hung on for the win.
In a repeat of the 2014 Minor Semi-Final Macquarie will again host Cessnock at Lyall Peacock
Field. Last year Cessnock snuck home in a thriller to continue their march to Grand Final week.
This year the Scorpions have had the wood on the Goannas with comprehensive wins in rounds
4 and 11 but finals football does not always follow the form guide. Cessnock are coming off a big
win and their young squad will have plenty of confidence but Macquarie have a point to prove.
Will be another close one.
On Sunday Western Suburbs and Lakes United do battle in the Major Semi-Final with the victor
clinching the 1st spot in the 2015 Grand Final. The Rosellas have again been the benchmark
this season clinching another minor premiership. Despite this title Lakes United have won both
games this season including a hard-fought 12 – 6 win at Harker Oval in Round 10. While the
Seagulls won’t be overawed by the task they will need to be at the top of their game to topple a
Western Suburbs side that have been building towards another Grand Final appearance and a
possible 4th Tooheys Cup victory in a row.
Congratulations to all the award winners from Wednesday night’s Tooheys Cup Presentation
Dinner. The big winner on the night was Lakes United’s Chris Adams who picked up the Player
of the Year Award and was a clear cut choice for the Players’ Player award. 3 additions to the
Newcastle Rugby League Life Membership honour roll, Tom Sheppard, Terry Davies and Bill
Giles, where also presented with their badges.
CENTRAL NEWCASTLE
______________________________________________
CENTRAL NEWCASTLE, THE MIGHTY BUTCHER BOYS
This is a big weekend for us, loyal supporters, as our U19s and Open Grade move towards their goal of
standing in the middle of Hunter Stadium holding the trophy high.
Our U19s take on Maitland, in the Major semi and Open Grade play Lakes in Minor Semi Final. There will
be no quarter asked or given in either of these games.
Last week at Cessnock, 1st Grade went from the mezzanine Junior to Affiliates the basement at the hands of a well
drilled Goannas outfit. The players will be disappointed in their performance after much good work
during the season.
Also at Cessnock, Open Grade played composed, intelligent football to overcome West, who finished 7
points higher on the competition ladder. The final score 28 to 16. This Butcher Boys side is playing their
best football of the season just when it is needed most.
At Cahill Oval, in the U19s encounter, West came out firing with some big hits, (you could feel ém in
the grandstand) in an effort to dominate. That was never going to work, loyal supporters, while the
young Butcher Boys may be a smaller side they are as tough as teak and they stuck to their game plan.
Leading 12 to 0 at oranges they finished at 20 to 10. Dom Murphy had a big game and Bryce Kennedy
was everywhere.
Central would like to send a big thank you to our coaching staff and ball boys.
A
big thank you to all our Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Managers, Physios, Strappers, Trainers and Ball
Boys. We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated team who work tirelessly to get and keep our teams
on the field.
Again we ask you to please carefully read the sponsors names at the bottom of this page. As always,
we ask everyone associated with Rugby League to support the people who support us. We owe them
so much.
CESSNOCK
_____________________________________________
There is a lot of pride in Goanna footy land this week not just in the fact that the
Goeys had a big 48 to 4 win over Central last weekend but also out of the 17
man squad chosen 12 of them have come through the Cessnock junior system.
This statistic gives a great deal of satisfaction to all the hard working people in
both our junior and senior organisations because if you have not got a pathway
for your local kids then why bother.
A great deal of credit should be given to our senior coaching staff particularly
First Grade Coach Barney Miller to reach the level he has with this team of
numerous rookies must surely rank as high as any previous achievements with
a squad of established first graders, a mention should also be given to Reserve
Grade Coach Dan Smailes who has prepared most of these players for the step
up to First Grade.
All games will be tough from here on in as we will be playing away but if we can
maintain last week’s form anything is possible.
The Cessnock club would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Mark White
on a wonderful career, he played his last game in Reggies last week. Mark has
been a magnificent servant for the club both on and off the field and we wish him
all the best, I am sure he will not be lost to the Goannas.
POSITIONS VACANT
Cessnock RLFC are looking for suitable applicants for the following
positions for the 2016 season;
• Reserve Grade Coach • Open Grade Coach • Under 19 Coach
Applications close 30th September for further information please contact
KURRI KURRI
The Station Hotel Open Grade continued their march forward with a strong 22-10 win against Lakes at
Cahill Oval on Sunday in the Qualifying Semi-final, setting up a match against Minor Premiers South’s
at Harker Oval on Sunday at 12 noon.
The Open Grade have now strung and impressive 11 wins and a draw from the last 12 matches.
The Dogs got away to a good start with Co-Coach Scott Hill powering over from 10m out to lead 6 nil.
The game stayed even for the rest of the half with Dogs going in leading 10-4.
Lakes struck back to even up at 10 all, till a fine try down the left hand side by Joab Eastley and a
sideline conversion from evergreen Daniel Doyle.
A penalty goal from Ryan Evans stretched the lead to a safe 18-10.
Just before full-time it was again that man Doyle, with a customary bustling run down the left wing to
score wide out to bring up the final score line.
Strong performances were had by Scott Hill, Jarrod Marko, Cody Dodd and Joab Eastley.
The side is an interesting mix of players with 7 players over 30 with numerous games of First Grade
experience and 8 players under 22.
The Durar Services under 19’s were impressive winners on Saturday at Cessnock in the elimination
semi-final against Lakes winning 30-10. This was a major turnaround for the boys as Lakes had towelled
then 50-6 only 6 weeks ago.
The return of Jonah Lisiua, Ethan Niszczot, Nick Scott and Jono Alchin from having a taste of Reserve
Grade helped put the edge on the side to be dominant for most of the match.
Leading 10 nil then 20-4, they only looked in any trouble for a short time when Lakes scored to make it
20-10 and then were on the attack for a number of sets, but strong willed defence turned their attack
away and then finished the game off strongly to draw away to 30-10.
Top performers were, Jordy Mitchell, Dam Mc Fadyen, Etahn Niszczot and Jonah Lisiua.
The boy’s face another sudden death game against Wests at Lyall Peacock oval Toronto on Saturday
at 10.40am.
SOUTH NEWCASTLE
SOUTH
Congratulations to Coach, David Van Buryen and his Reserve Grade side on their thrilling win
in the Elimination Semi Final at Cessnock last Saturday. The win was not easy for South’s
supporters as they had to wait until 10 minutes before the end of the match for their team to finally
take the lead and go on to win 24-18, after trailing 10-12 at the break.
South would like to thank our supporters for their encouragement throughout the year and we
are hoping our Reserves and Open sides can provide Junior them with Affiliates a less nerve-raking weekend this
Saturday and Sunday with both sides progressing more comfortably towards a Grand Final berth.
