1. SCOPE<br />

<strong>MIL</strong>-<strong>HDBK</strong>-<strong>1461A</strong><br />

1.1 Scope. This handbook establishes and describes the manufacturer's<br />

identification symbol used in the lot numbers for all DOD contracted manufacture,<br />

renovation, or regrouping of ammunition and ammunition components. The<br />

usage of manufacturer's identification symbols is defined and described in <strong>MIL</strong>-<br />

STD-1168, Ammunition Lot Numbering.<br />

2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS<br />

2.1 Government documents.<br />

2.1.1 Specifications and standards. The following specifications and<br />

standards form a part of this document to the extent specified herein. Unless<br />

otherwise specified, the issues of these documents shall be those listed in the<br />

issue of the Department of Defense Index of Specifications and Standards<br />

(DODISS) and supplement thereto, cited in the solicitation.<br />

2.2 Order of precedence. In the event of a conflict between the text of<br />

this document and the references cited herein, the text of this document takes<br />

precedence. Nothing in this document, however, supersedes applicable laws<br />

and regulations unless a specific exemption has been obtained.<br />

3. DEFINITIONS<br />

3.1 Ammunition. A generic term which includes all manner of missiles to<br />

be thrown against an enemy, such as bullets, projectiles, rockets, cartridges,<br />

grenades, torpedoes, bombs, and guided missiles with their necessary<br />

propellants, primers, fuzes, detonators and charges of conventional explosive,<br />

nuclear explosive, chemical or other materials. In the "broadest sense" the term<br />

is not limited to those materials to be thrown, nor to use against an enemy, but<br />

will include all explosive devices, pyrotechnics, and pyrotechnic devices. The<br />

purpose is not limited and includes in addition to direct use against an enemy,<br />

such as illumination, signaling, saluting, mining, digging, cutting, accelerating,<br />
