I Beach, FL, and there are dozens of beautiful <strong>scale</strong><br />
I model aircraft all around, w h e r e would you be? If<br />
you answered anything other than the Top Gun <strong>scale</strong><br />
e x t r a v a g a n z a , I s u g g e s t y o u h a v e n ' t b e e n r e a d i n g<br />
enough model airplane magazines. Sponsored by Pacer<br />
Technology* and Model Airplane News, this year's Top<br />
Gun c e l e b r a t e d its <strong>10</strong>th a n n i v e r s a r y . As y o u m i g h t<br />
expect from the event's organizer, <strong>Frank</strong> Tiano, this<br />
year's competition was a grand, world-class event.<br />
For the 1998 competition, 68 contestants<br />
a c c e p t e d <strong>Frank</strong>'s invitation to<br />
compete in the Florida sun. All but nine<br />
were able to attend, and this brought<br />
the number of entries to 59. Even the<br />
weather cooperated this year, and the<br />
notorious Top Gun crosswinds seemed<br />
to abate for most<br />
of the <strong>10</strong>th birthday<br />
bash. Top Gun includes three <strong>scale</strong><br />
competition classes: Expert, Team and<br />
D e s i g n e r . Static j u d g i n g t a k e s into<br />
account accuracy of color and markings,<br />
outline and the overall quality of<br />
craftsmanship. The four flight rounds<br />
that follow Static judging are judged<br />
for flight realism, placement and execution<br />
of the various mandatory and<br />
optional maneuvers.<br />
Beginning a day earlier than usual,<br />
s t a t i c c o m p e t i t i o n a n d test flights<br />
commenced on Wednesday. From the<br />
start, it seemed that things would be<br />
a little bit different this year, and there<br />
w e r e n o c l e a r i n d i c a t i o n s of w h o<br />
might have an edge until very late in<br />
the competition.<br />
On the wing, Dave Piatt's T-28 makes a high-speed flyby.<br />
Dave's Vs-scafe model has a wing span of 82 inches, weighs<br />
22 pounds and is powered by a Moki 1.8.<br />

West-powered model is the Polish version of the Soviet MIG-17F.<br />
It finished In fifth place.
