4 | <strong>ARCTIC</strong> <strong>OBITER</strong> BAR NOTES Northern Issues a Priority for CBA Where did the time go? August 31 st marks the end of my term as President of the Northwest Territories Branch of the Canadian Bar Association. It has been my pleasure to serve in this capacity, and I know the Branch will be in excellent hands as Elaine Keenan Bengts takes over on September 1 st . Joining her will be Vice-President Malinda Kellett and Secretary-Treasurer Jeannette Savoie. Incoming council members for the NWT are Caroline Wawzonek, BettyLou McIlmoyle, Glen Rutland and Sheldon Toner. This month I attended the CBA’s annual Canadian Legal Conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario, accompanied by Elaine Keenan Bengts and Linda Whitford. If you have never been to a CLC, I would strongly encourage you to consider attending. While Presidents, Vice- Presidents and Executive Directors take care of the business end of things in the days prior to the Sunday Opening Plenary, Janice Walsh the remainder of the event is an excellent opportunity to find out what’s happening at the CBA as well as to participate in CPD programs, networking opportunities, and other events. CBA Council met on Saturday and Sunday morning and received reports sections, forums, conferences, Executive officers and associated groups and organizations. The Treasurer and Executive officers also reported to council and resolutions were debated and voted on. All resolutions, with some amendments to 10-03-A, were passed. At the opening plenary, we heard from Chief Justice Beverly McLaughlin, the Minister of Justice for Canada and Ontario. The keynote speaker was the distinguished economist Dr. Paul Krugman. Other speakers over the course of the conference were former Canadian Chief of Defence Staff General Rick Hillier, workplace heath expert Dr. Linda Duxbury, International Olympic Committee Member Richard Pound, Q.C., and legal futurist and author Dr. Richard Susskind. A significant number of attendees make it a family event, and a children’s program is provided. Next year the event is in Halifax, Nova Scotia and the last time they hosted, it was very successful. Judging from the report of the planning committee, this one will be equally so. On the first day of Council, CBA takes the opportunity to recognize legal scholarship, service to the CBA, pro bono work, promotion of equality, and advancement of the cause of equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and two-spirited (LGBTT) people. The Justicia Awards, offered by the CBA and the federal Department of Justice, celebrate outstanding journalism that fosters public awareness and understanding of the Canadian justice system and the roles played by institutions and participants in the legal system. The 2010 CBA Award winners were announced at the Awards Lunch, and it gives me pleasure to mention the winners in this article. [EDITOR’S NOTE: CLIC KING ON THE WINNERS NAME ON PAGE 5 WILL OPEN THE RESPECTIVE NEWS RELEASE.] Congratulations to all the award recipients, with a special shout out to Michelle Hollins from Alberta and to Simon Gingras of the CBA National Office. We derive a great deal of support from the Alberta Branch and I never tire of listening to Michelle talk about the influence and importance of CBA in her life. Simon is responsible for directing IT operations including computer operations, IT support, systems analysis and programming. He also
JULY/AUGUST 2010 | 5 establishes technical priorities, standards and procedures and ensures sufficient systems capacity for organizational needs. As such, he has been an invaluable resource to all CBA staff across Canada. At the Young Lawyers’ closing lunch on Tuesday, August 17 th , Rod Snow of Whitehorse, assumed the presidency of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) , accepting the chain of office from outgoing President Kevin Carroll, QC. Rod is the first CBA President to hail from North of 60. CBA’s news release on the event quotes Rod as saying, ‚I hope to bring a Northern perspective on national issues such as access to justice and legal aid. Based on my experience of 17 years in the north and more than 25 years as a partner in a national law firm, I know we can do more to improve access to justice for individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).‛ He went on to note that, ‚I know that lawyers everywhere are under pressure from a confluence of factors such as globalization, technological change, and the fallout from the recent recession to adapt and do more for less. These kinds of issues will be my priorities.‛ The CBA’s new Skilled Lawyer Series and the Partnership Toolkit are two very valuable ‚tools‛ you will not want to miss.
