Eligibility for Publication<br />

Progeny Proven <strong>Sire</strong>s<br />

To be eligible for publication in <strong>the</strong> <strong>CCA</strong> <strong>Sire</strong><br />

<strong>Summary</strong>, a bull must:<br />

1) have had at least 10 calves with CHARM weaning<br />

records in <strong>the</strong> last 3 years.<br />

2) meet an accuracy standard of .50 in <strong>the</strong> weaning<br />

weight EPD evaluation.<br />

Weaning weight is used as <strong>the</strong> selection criteria as it is<br />

least subject to bias and is <strong>the</strong> trait that is best<br />

represented across herds and sires. EPD and accuracy<br />

values are published for all traits for <strong>the</strong> sires selected.<br />

All sires listed in this section have enough<br />

performance-tested progeny to be considered as<br />

predictable.<br />

<strong>Interpreting</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sire</strong> <strong>Summary</strong><br />

Young <strong>Sire</strong>s<br />

To be eligible for publication in <strong>the</strong> <strong>CCA</strong> <strong>Sire</strong><br />

<strong>Summary</strong> a young bull must:<br />

1) be born on or after January 1, 2002.<br />

2) have an accuracy of .35 or greater for weaning<br />

weight EPD.<br />

3) have had at least 2 calves with CHARM weaning<br />

records.<br />

Young sires with higher accuracies (.50 or greater) may<br />

also appear in <strong>the</strong> progeny proven section. This section<br />

is intended to provide information on young sires with<br />

potential for use in breeding programs. The EPDs<br />

expressed should be carefully considered as some<br />

accuracies may be fairly low.<br />

Trait Leaders<br />

Active Progeny Proven sires identified from <strong>the</strong> bull<br />

evaluation as trait leaders are those that excel in a<br />

specific trait. To be selected for <strong>the</strong> trait leader<br />

designation a bull must meet superior standards for<br />

both <strong>the</strong> EPD and <strong>the</strong> accuracy of <strong>the</strong> trait in question.<br />

The sires designated as (TL) throughout <strong>the</strong> proven<br />

section include <strong>the</strong> top 25 for each trait based on EPD<br />

values with accuracy values of .75 or greater for birth<br />

weight and weaning weight and .65 or greater for<br />

yearling weight and total maternal, and .60 or greater<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Milk EPD. Ties for any trait were broken by<br />

taking <strong>the</strong> animal with <strong>the</strong> higher accuracy first.<br />

2. Bull’s tattoo and C-C notation if applicable, i.e. C-C 90 means <strong>the</strong> sire was tested in <strong>the</strong> 88-90 section of <strong>the</strong> Conception to Consumer Program.<br />

3. Names of bull’s sire, paternal grandsire and maternal grandsire.<br />

4. Bull’s current owner(s) , address and phone number as per pedigree files on Dec. 1, 2006.<br />

5. Calving Ease EPD and Accuracy (TL designates trait leader).<br />

6. Birth weight EPD and accuracy (TL designates trait leader).<br />

7. Weaning weight EPD and accuracy (TL designates trait leader).<br />

8. Distribution of records: The number of herds providing weaning data on <strong>the</strong> sire and <strong>the</strong> total number of weaning records used in <strong>the</strong> analysis from those herds.<br />

Performance information from both <strong>CCA</strong> and AICA are considered.<br />

9. Yearling weight EPD and accuracy (TL designates trait leader).<br />

10. Scrotal Circumference EPD and accuracy (TL designates trait leader).<br />

11. Milk EPD and accuracy with number of sire’s daughters in production (milking) (TL designates trait leader).<br />

12. Total Maternal EPD (milk EPD + ! WngWt EPD) and accuracy (TL designates trait leader).<br />

13. Carcass weight EPD and accuracy<br />

14. Rib-Eye Area EPD and accuracy<br />

15. Backfat EPD and accuracy<br />

16. Lean Yield EPD and accuracy<br />

17. Marbling EPD and accuracy
