SENIOR NEWS
Time for your
Flu Shot...
Influenza is a serious disease that can
lead to hospitalization and sometimes
even death. Every flu season is different,
and influenza infection can affect
people differently. Even healthy people
can get very sick from the flu and spread
it to others. During recent flu seasons, between 80% and 90% of
flu related deaths have occurred in people 65 years and older.
“Flu season” in the United States can begin as early as October
and last as late as May. An annual seasonal flu vaccine (either the
flu shot or the nasal spray flu vaccine) is the best way to reduce
the chances that you will get seasonal flu and spread it to others.
Local pharmacies, your primary physician, and the Health
Department are locations to visit when looking for a place to get
your yearly vaccine. You may visit the Clark Center on Thursday,
Oct. 15 beginning at 10 a.m. to receive your flu shot. Information
by the Center for Disease Control (CDC.)
Long-Term Care Residents Honored During
Residents’ Rights Month
Residents’ Rights Month
is an annual event held in
October by the National
Consumer Voice for Quality
Long-Term Care (Consumer
Voice) to celebrate and
focus on awareness of dignity, respect and the value of
long-term care residents in nursing homes and assisted living
facilities. The theme for Residents' Rights Month 2015 is
"CARE MATTERS” with the goal of highlighting quality care.
The Nursing Home Reform Law, passed in 1987, guarantees
nursing home residents their individual rights, including but
not limited to: individualized care, respect, dignity, the right
to visitation, the right to privacy, the right to complain, and
the right to make independent choices. It is important to listen
to residents who live in nursing homes and assisted living
facilities.
The National Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program has
worked for more than 30 years to promote residents’ rights
daily. Authorized under the Older Americans Act and administered
by the Administration on Aging, the program also
provides information on how to find a facility, conducts community
education sessions, and supports residents, their
families and the public with one-on-one consultation regarding
long-term care.
For more information, please contact Linda Blake at
National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month
In 2014, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
(NBCAM) celebrated it's 30th anniversary. Since
it's inception, NBCAM has been at the forefront
of promoting awareness of breast cancer issues
and has evolved along with the national dialogue
on breast cancer. Today, NBCAM recognizes that
although many great strides have been made in breast
cancer awareness and treatment, there remains much to be
accomplished. As NBCAM celebrates its 31st anniversary, they
remain dedicated to educating and empowering women to
take charge of their own breast health by practicing regular
self-breast exams to identify any changes, scheduling regular
visits and annual mammograms with their healthcare provider,
adhering to prescribed treatment, and knowing the facts about
recurrence.
October is Bone & Joint
Health Awareness Month!
What should I know about keeping my
bones and joint healthy?
Bones support you and allow you to move. They protect
your brain, heart, and other important organs from injury.
Bones also store nutrients like calcium, which help keep
our bones strong, and then release calcium into the body
when needed for other uses. If you don’t keep your bones
healthy, they become weak and can break. Broken bones
and fractures can be painful and even cause long-lasting
health problems.
Joints are places where two bones in your body meet, such
as your elbow or knee. Joints also have cartilage, which acts
as a spongy shock absorber on the ends of the bones to prevent
them from rubbing against each other.
Ways to keep your bones and joints healthy: Stay active,
spend time in the sun, moderate amount of salt and alcohol,
build muscle, healthy food choices and maintain ideal
body weight.
If you have a sore joint, you can use an ice pack or a bag
of frozen vegetables on the sore spot. Tell your health care
provider if your pain is improving or worsening. They may
suggest a better treatment option. Information by: Arthritis
foundation and NIH.gov.
