‘Sticking out’ in the crowd by H aving coached lacrosse at the University at Albany for 13 years, AA Head Varsity Lacrosse Coach Mark Wimmer has just three requirements of his players: be on time, pay attention, and play to the best of your ability and push yourself at all times—including practice. Coach Wimmer brought these commandments with him to The Albany Academies 10 years ago, and has applied the same rigorous gameplan to his work on and off the field. His quest for excellence translates from the lacrosse field to the classroom, always expecting his students and players to give their all in the pursuit of excellence. Coach Wimmer began his lacrosse career at SUNY Brockport as a player and his love for the game has only grown since that time. “Lacrosse contains elements of many of the great sports such as the stick-handling and behind the goal play of hockey, the man-to-man defense of basketball, and the open field play of soccer,” said Coach Wimmer. “Although a player must be athletic to be successful, lacrosse is a thinking man’s game, and there are many lessons to be learned while playing it.” Brendan Callanan ’10 Intern, Marketing & Communications Department One of Coach Wimmer’s main messages as the AA Head Varsity Lacrosse Coach is that a strong work ethic is crucial not only for success in athletics but also throughout life. He strongly believes in the importance of displaying good conduct and sportsmanship – especially when times get tough. “We are bound to take some punches in life, and we have to respond by coming back, not by hanging our head or losing our composure,” said Coach Wimmer. By stressing the importance of teamwork, he hopes that the values learned on the lacrosse field will transfer to other areas such as the classroom, the home and throughout the community. Above all, he tries to exemplify good behavior and consistency to his players. He asks his players to show up everyday and work hard, and he does the same in return. “Coaching is really about teaching,” says Coach Wimmer. “By pushing my players to develop a strong work ethic and consistency, they will hopefully carry these essential values over to all aspects of their lives.” Mark Wimmer teaches Upper School A.P. United States History, A.P. Government and Politics, and Decisions in Leadership at The Albany Academies and serves as the AA Head Varsity Lacrosse Coach. He is joined on the lacrosse field by long time assistant coaches Jak Bestle and Steve O’Shea. Coach Wimmer has a strong interest in photography (he has taught Photography at AA) and worked as a professional photographer for a number of years, counting Colorado and the mountain west as his favorite destinations. He has a Bachelor’s Degree from SUNY Brockport and a Master’s Degree from the University at Albany. Coach Wimmer was the recipient of the C. Woodrow Ray '66 Teaching Award in 2004 and was named coach of the year by the Capital District Lacrosse Coaches Association in 1996. 14 The Albany Academies Magazine

MS students impress at Science Symposium! Our 7th & 8th grade girls and boys displayed their hard work as part of the Middle School Science Symposium on March 22 in the AAG Lower School Gym. Seventy eight students took part in projects ranging from “The effect of energy drinks on pulse rate” to “Does temperature affect crystal growth” to “The effect of wind orientation on energy creation by a model wind turbine” and were judged by science faculty, parents and individuals that joined us from outside organizations such as GE Global Research, Albany Molecular Research Inc., Plug Power, Albany Medical College, Fortitech, New York State Department of Health and the Cancer Research Institute. Eleven inducted into AA Cum Laude Society Eleven students were inducted into the AA Cum Laude Society at an April 24 ceremony held in Caird Chapel. Cum Laude is an academic honor society that annually recognizes the accomplishments of seniors who have attended the Academies for at least three years. The event, coordinated by faculty members David Pascone and Dr. Jamie Howard, saw David Barra ’10, Vincent Birch ’10, Jake Centofranchi ’10, Joshua Hoh ’10, Christopher Maggiore ’10, Zachary Nelson ’10, Ankur Patel ’10, Lukas Schmied ’10, Charles (Buddy) White ’10, Gregory Wilk ’10 and Alexander Zacharczenko ’10 inducted into the group. Rock band films video at The Albany Academy Albany, NY pop-punk trio Young & Divine – featuring JP Clark ’04 (vocals/bass), Jake Mai (guitar/vocals) & Joe Bortscheller (drums) – visited The Albany Academy on June 9 to film a video for their new song titled “Weekdays.” Academy students and faculty members were used as extras on the shoot, which took place in a variety of locations such as Caird Chapel & The Buttery. The two-year old band was influenced by The Police, Daft Punk, Green Day, Sugarcult, Oasis and Thrice.
