pays tribute to the lives<br />

of deceased alumni while<br />

benefitting current and<br />

Bernice (Williams) Kane ’35 died<br />

Nov. 10, 2012. She lived in<br />

Ridley Park, Pa., and taught<br />

for many years. She had been a<br />

church elder and library board<br />

member. Surviving are two<br />

children, a daughter-in-law, a<br />

sister, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren<br />

and one greatgreat-grandchild.<br />

Dr. Donald G. Stitt ’35 died Jan.<br />

2, 2013. A physician, he<br />

worked in pediatrics, later<br />

forming a partnership in<br />

Greenville, Pa. He retired as<br />

acting medical director of the<br />

Polk Center in Polk, Pa. He<br />

was an Army veteran, a Mason<br />

and an active church member.<br />

Surviving are his wife, Barbara,<br />

three children and three<br />

grandchildren.<br />

Dr. John A. Hogg ’37 died July<br />

16, 2012. A chemist, he<br />

enjoyed a long career with the<br />

Upjohn Company and received<br />

the Outstanding Michigan<br />

Inventor Award in 1963 from<br />

the Michigan Patent Law<br />

Association. He also kept and<br />

studied honeybees. Survivors<br />

include a sister, three children,<br />

seven grandchildren and a<br />

great-grandchild.<br />

Gretta Jane (Martin) Austin ’38<br />

died Oct. 14, 2012. She was<br />

a career librarian, working at<br />

the Yale Medical Library and<br />

in many schools. Surviving are<br />

three children, six grandchildren<br />

and eight great-grandchildren.<br />

Irwin A. Hecht ’38 died Sept. 11,<br />

2011. He lived in Wilsonville, Ore.<br />

Richard T. Flenner Sr. ’38 died<br />

Oct. 8, 2012. He retired<br />

from Diamond Shamrock<br />

as a chemical engineer. He<br />

lived in Painesville Township,<br />

Ohio, and enjoyed sports of<br />

all kinds. Surviving are three<br />

children; eight grandchildren,<br />

including Thomas Flenner ’96<br />

and Timothy Flenner ’04; and<br />

nine great-grandchildren.<br />

Emilie L. Greenwood ’40 died<br />

April 16, 2012.<br />

Sarah “Sally” (Allen) Manley<br />

’40 died Sept. 24, 2012. She<br />

taught kindergarten and first<br />

grade for many years in Norwalk,<br />

Conn., and directed their Head<br />

Start Program. A tennis player,<br />

she authored several children’s<br />

books, including “Mr. Crispy’s<br />

Story of the First Candy Canes.”<br />

She resided in Davidson,<br />

N.C. Survivors include two<br />

daughters, three stepchildren,<br />

grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.<br />

Dr. Joseph P. Mohney ’40 died<br />

Nov. 13, 2012. He was a Navy<br />

veteran of World War II and the<br />

Korean War. A dentist, he lived<br />

in Johnstown, Pa., and had a<br />

private practice from 1953 to<br />

1985. He served dental groups,<br />

the Boy Scouts and his church.<br />

Survivors include his wife, Mary,<br />

a daughter, grandchildren and<br />

great-grandchildren.<br />

Dorothy (Waterman) Gahn ’41<br />

died Sept. 3, 2012. She<br />

lived in Pennsylvania, then<br />

retired to the Phoenix, Ariz.,<br />

area. Survivors include two<br />

children, grandchildren,<br />

great-grandchildren and<br />

three siblings, including Jean<br />

Waterman ’46 and Donald<br />

Waterman ’49.<br />

Ellen (Joyner) Gully ’41 died<br />

Feb. 17, 2012. She lived in<br />

Clearwater, Fla., and is survived<br />

by a son and grandchildren.<br />

Mary Lou (O’Brien) Henry ’41 died<br />

Nov. 12, 2012. She taught at<br />

many schools in Pennsylvania<br />

and New York, spending many<br />

years in Clymer, N.Y. She served<br />

on the library board, played<br />

bridge and was involved in her<br />

church. A son and daughter-inlaw<br />

survive.<br />

David E. Baughman ’42 died<br />

Nov. 8, 2012. A World War II<br />

Air Force veteran, he lived in<br />

Greenville, Pa., and retired<br />

as director of personnel with<br />

the former Greenville Steel<br />

Car Co. He was very active in<br />

community affairs, supporting<br />

youth recreation and community<br />

health. Surviving are friends<br />

and cousins.<br />

Robert W. Downs ’42 died Nov. 7,<br />

2012. <strong>After</strong> a long career in the<br />

automotive business, he joined a<br />

securities brokerage firm. He was<br />

active in church and community<br />

affairs in Greenville, S.C. He was<br />

an Army veteran. Surviving are<br />

three children, six grandchildren<br />

and four great-grandchildren.<br />

May (Pearce) Goldberg ’42 died<br />

June 5, 2012. She lived in<br />

Prescott, Ariz., and is survived<br />

by her husband, Steve, two<br />

daughters, two grandchildren<br />

and a great-grandson.<br />
