Our History
The picturesque community of Carlsbad has been a
part of the southeastern New Mexico landscape since 1888, when
it was established as the Town of Eddy—a name given in honor of
Charles B. Eddy, a prominent force in the founding of the city we
know today.
With the enhancement of area mineral
springs, and their beneficial medicinal
uses, the settlement’s moniker was
ultimately changed to Carlsbad, after
the famed European spa, “Karlsbad.”
Carlsbad was designated as a city in 1918.
The monumental discoveries of the
region’s caverns and the establishment
of the Carlsbad Caverns National Park
in 1930 led to worldwide appreciation
of the Carlsbad community.
Today, Carlsbad has transformed
into a prosperous city of almost
30,000 residents and numerous and
diverse businesses. Young families,
entrepreneurs and retirees all find
Carlsbad to be a home that is second-tonone,
as they take pleasure in the smalltown
charm and friendliness discovered
here.
The area’s relaxed lifestyle is supported
by the serene beauty of southeast New
Mexico and approximately 350 days of
sunshine each year. Add to this, access
to a variety of quality conveniences and
you have all the advantages of living in a
community such as Carlsbad.
So, if you are in search of a new residence,
looking to establish a new business
venture or coming to take advantage of
the area’s great natural attractions for
the weekend, the city of Carlsbad and
its residents invite you to discover the
treasures that make this community a
real gem in New Mexico.
The Eddy House, located in Heritage Park, is the first
