Safety First
Dehydration and sunburn are most often
associated with warm weather activities, but the
risks are just as high in the winter.
Under warm conditions, water intake is
regulated by the “thirst mechanism” . In cold
environments, however, the thirst mechanism is
not a dependable indicator of body water needs.
Additionally, dry air and physical activity will
increase the amount of water loss. An
indication for dehydration is a darkening of
urine. Keep your water level in check and stay
hydrated when on the slopes.
Secondly, snow and elevation increase
the chance of getting sunburn on the mountains.
UV rays are reflected by the snow even on
cloudy days, and they increase intensity 4% per
1,000 feet. Protect yourself with sunscreen or
sun block on all exposed skin. Apply it thirty
minutes before exposure and reapply every two
hours.
The weather is changing, but the
environmental risks don’t.
I gave myself a holiday gift
