Samuel Ryder Academy | Prospectus | 2012-2013 Partnership with parents Good relationships with parents are vital if children are to make the best progress possible. A good partnership involves transparency, honesty and clear channels of communication so that you are fully informed about your child’s learning and development. There are a number of ways in which parents can become even more involved in their child’s education at Samuel Ryder Academy. Some of the formal opportunities are listed below but parents are encouraged to contact staff at the Academy at other times if they have any concerns or queries. Parent consultation evenings Parents from all year groups are invited into the Academy once a year for a formal consultation evening with members of the teaching staff. These evenings allow discussion regarding student progress, behaviour issues and targets for future success. Parent information evenings Various information evenings are held throughout the year where we get together with parents to discuss the latest educational issues facing their children. Our induction days and evenings allow parents to begin their partnership with the Academy where they meet staff and see the Academy for perhaps the first time. Further information evenings for different age groups covering topics such as internet safety, drugs and sex education are also arranged. These complement our Academy-based information evenings which include study skills and revision strategies for SATs, GCSEs and beyond. New Sixth Form students and their parents receive further information evenings about supporting their start to Sixth Form life, revision strategies and careers guidance. Parent surveys Electronic surveys of parental opinions will be carried out at consultation evenings by teams of specially trained students. Online surveys will also be used to gain parents’ views as part of other specific projects. Parent Governors The Governing Body of the Academy includes a number of Parent Governors who are there to represent the views of parents and to ensure that parents have a say in the strategic decision-making of the Academy. Parents’ Association A Parents’ Association provides a full calendar of events throughout the year. Parents are actively encouraged to either join the Association or to become involved in the events as they happen. 14
As an all-through school, providing education from 4-19 on the same site, the Academy is uniquely placed to ensure the best possible progression for its students as they move through the key stages, and to use the best pedagogical practice from primary and secondary education in order to address their needs.
