Executive Director’s Message 

In tough economic times, need increases, charitable giving decreases, and those of us entrusted with the distribution 

of grant dollars sharpen our focus and adjust our giving strategies. 

Through our discretionary grant program (grants not suggested by our donor-advisors) we made grants to help people avoid foreclosure and 

remain in their homes, to advocate for the development of affordable housing, to improve access to health care and to feed the hungry. Looking 

to Long Island’s future, we supported leadership development, educational enrichment, and a range of activities to protect the quality of 

our air and water. 

Long Islanders giving through the Long Island Community Foundation demonstrated their continuing generosity despite, or perhaps in the face 

of, the gloomy financial outlook. Their gifts supported a vast array of issues and programs from medical services to the protection of wildlife, 

from assisting people with special needs to supporting the arts --which can provide hope and inspiration in difficult times, and from organizing 

neighbor-to-neighbor assistance to bringing the third and final debate of the 2008 presidential election to Long Island’s Hofstra University. 

Combining funds from several sources, LICF continued into the final phase of a 3-year initiative created to strengthen a dozen small to mid-sized 

nonprofit organizations seeking to become more effective agents of change in some of Long Island's most distressed communities. Seasoned 

consultants from across the United States worked with boards and staff to improve organizational systems and structure, gather data, develop 

clearer strategies and work plans, and incrementally build capacity to achieve greater community impact. 

Moving forward through 2009, we find ourselves in receipt of more funding requests than ever before. We are grateful for the contributions 

that continue to flow and for the opportunity to continue providing a strategic and meaningful response to the issues affecting the quality of 

life for Long Islanders throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Progressive American Fund $30,000 

For a campaign on New York State tax reform, started by 

the new Long Island Social Justice Coalition, to correct the 

disproportionate burden between the states wealthiest and 

poorest residents. 

Consequences of Unpaid Family Leave 

Center for Working Families $17,000 

To conduct a survey on the need for a paid family leave 

benefit after the birth of a child, illness or injury to a 

family member, or other family emergency. 

Education - $50,300 

Addressing Inequities 

Children’s Orchestra Society $7,300 

For scholarships for economically disadvantaged students 

to receive lessons and participate in an orchestra for 

specially talented young people. 

Institute For Student Achievement $18,000 

To divide Hempstead High School into five “small learning 

communities” and offer a wide range of support to students, 

teachers and parents focused on improving student 

performance and graduation rates.. 

Project Grad Long Island $25,000 

For an educational enrichment program in the Westbury 

School District enabling students to graduate high school 

and go on to college with scholarship assistance. 

Environment - $231,500 

Reducing our Carbon Footprint 

Neighborhood Network Research Center $24,000 

For the Local Action on Global Climate Change project 

and the Clean Energy Task Force, which is working with 

towns, villages and other governmental agencies to endorse 

Energy Star home standards and to establish clean energy 

action plans. 

One Region Fund $30,000 

Support of a tri-state collaborative fund at The New York 

Community Trust focused on promoting transit solutions, 

especially affordable transit-centered housing development. 

Stony Brook Foundation - Humanities Institute $12,500 

To launch a three-year collaborative initiative between 

Stony Brook University and the Village of Port Jefferson to 

address the urgent issue of climate change through a 

‘go green” initiative. 

Preserving Open Space 

The Trust For Public Land $80,000 

To conduct an objective analysis of the economic and 

fiscal effects that parks and open space have on Nassau 

and Suffolk Counties. 

Protecting the Watershed 

Peconic Baykeeper $10,000 

To continue and further develop the Baywatch Program, 

which measures, compiles and sets quantitative standards 

for assessing the overall health and viability of Peconic 

and south shore estuaries. 

Friends Of The Bay $15,000 

To prepare a comprehensive Watershed Action Plan for 

the Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor estuary, engaging the 

community to identify priority items to protect and 

improve the ecological integrity of the estuary. 

Reclaiming Land and Facilities for Productive Use 

Long Island Progressive Coalition $30,000 

For a broad-based public education, organizing, and 

advocacy initiative to support re-powering Long Island’s 

power plants. 

Sustainable Long Island $30,000 

For Sustainable Long Island’s brownfields redevelopment 

program, which educates and convenes government 

agencies, local residents and developers to clean up 

contaminated properties and redevelop them for productive 

use by the community.

For a project to identify Nassau County’s uninsured and 

provide them with a no-cost “home” for all of their medical

For a “YIMBY” (Yes In My Backyard) campaign designed

and enhance the rights and working conditions 

for immigrants.

To educate immigrants on their legal rights and provide 

practical information if they are subject to an Immigration 

and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid or arrest.

For the Empire Justice Center at Touro Law School’s Public 

Advocacy Center, to provide legal services to protect the 

rights of the poor who do not have access to adequate legal 

services and representation. 

Greater Gordon Heights Civic Association $15,000 

Funds Administrator: Vision Long Island 

Toward the salary of a community organizer responsible 

for overseeing community revitalization efforts and addressing 

critical community issues in this underserved hamlet. 

Island Harvest $15,000 

For the organization’s food rescue operations that feed the 

hungry and needy in the Freeport area.

To provide legal assistance to low-income and minority 

homeowners, enabling them to avoid foreclosure and

To bring the two libraries serving Copiague and Valley 

Stream into the Family Place Network of 34 public libraries 

throughout Long Island, which provide a wide range of

For the Long Island Center for Nonprofit Leadership to 

provide consulting services to strengthen select nonprofit

To support new leadership as the Museum diversifies its 

stakeholders and income streams to ensure 

long-term viability. 

Community Training Assistance Center $255,000 

For intensive management assistance to a limited 

number of critical Long Island nonprofit organizations

To strengthen the organization so that it can expand its

To participate in the New York Funders’ Collaborative for 

Strong Latino Communities and bring additional funding 

to Long Island-based Latino led and Latino

Long Island Immigrant Alliance (LIIA) $20,000 

To strengthen the principal coalition advocating on 

behalf of immigrant rights on Long Island.

Operating support and consulting assistance related to 

a staff leadership transition at the LIFWG. 

Teatro Experimental Yerbabruja $15,000 

To enable a community theatrical arts program, focused 

on social change, to hire its first salaried staff person.

Long Island Unitarian Universalist Fund: $215,000 

The LIUU Fund is a field of interest fund in the Long Island Community Foundation that promotes progressive social change. 

The fund was established by the Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program at Shelter Rock. Grants are made in response to 

competitive proposals received from Long Island nonprofit organizations. The proposals are reviewed by LICF staff and 

presented to an advisory committee, composed of members drawn from UU congregations across Long Island and appointed

General support for a grassroots social, educational, and 

advocacy organization dedicated to helping the Latino day 

laborers and their families living in the Westbury and 

Farmingville areas.

To support an organizational re-building process by recruiting new 

member institutions and organizing local core action teams. 

New York Committee for Occupational 

Safety and Health $20,000 

To recruit and train a group of immigrant workers as 

occupational health peer advocates in an effort to increase 

the awareness of workplace hazards and decrease occupational 

injuries and fatalities.

For the continued leadership training project among Latinos
