example people who have a basic life condition of Hell will create an environment<br />

which reflects that condition. What do you see as you look at your own<br />

environment or at the world we have collectively created?<br />

Regardless of our basic life condition, or of what “world” we are in, our<br />

emotions and experiences do not remain stable. Everyone will experience anger,<br />

joy, calmness, and learning something new. A person in Hell can experience<br />

Rapture when his pain is temporarily relieved. A person who is in the world<br />

of Bodhisattva feels Rapture when they are able <strong>to</strong> help someone but might be<br />

plunged in<strong>to</strong> <strong>An</strong>ger when they see someone mistreat others and be plunged<br />

in<strong>to</strong> Hell because they can do nothing about it. Each of the ten life conditions<br />

contains the potential for all ten within itself. It is a person’s interaction with<br />

his or her environment that determines which of the ten worlds will manifest<br />

in life at any given time.<br />

The important point <strong>to</strong> remember is that just as we all possess the potential<br />

<strong>to</strong> manifest the worlds of anger, rapture, and learning, we also possess the<br />

potential <strong>to</strong> manifest the world of Buddhahood when we fuse our lives with<br />

the Gohonzon through<br />

What is<br />

Tozan?<br />

The pilgrimage,<br />

<strong>to</strong>zan, <strong>to</strong> the Head Temple<br />

Taisekiji, located in<br />

Japan at the foot of Mt.<br />

Fuji, is an essential practice<br />

in Nichiren Shoshu.<br />

During the Daishonin’s<br />

lifetime, a <strong>to</strong>zan was a<br />

pilgrimage <strong>to</strong> visit Him.<br />

The term originally signified<br />

serving the Daishonin directly and receiving instruction from Him. Making<br />

a pilgrimage <strong>to</strong> Taisekiji, the dwelling place of both the Dai-Gohonzon<br />

and the High Priest, carries the same significance as the <strong>to</strong>zans during the<br />

Daishonin’s lifetime. Taisekiji was founded in 1290 after Nichiren Daishonin’s<br />

passing, when the Second High Priest Nikko Shonin moved <strong>to</strong> this spot and<br />

further propagated the teachings he had inherited from the <strong>True</strong> Buddha. Since<br />

that time, Taisekiji has remained the spiritual center from which the orthodox<br />

teachings of Nichiren Daishonin have been handed down for over 700 years.<br />

Believers come from all over the world <strong>to</strong> express their appreciation <strong>to</strong> the Dai-<br />

Gohonzon. Their pilgrimages are a living testimony <strong>to</strong> the universal truth of
