1. Dean’s Welcome
June 2013
Dear Student:
I am very pleased to welcome you to the academic year 2013-2014. If you are new to UCSF, I have that in common
with you. I hope that you will find this orientation manual helpful in addressing your questions as a new or returning
School of Nursing student.
The school has a long history of serving the underserved in our community and we hope that many of you will
participate in our commitment during your clinical rotations. Our practices provide a range of primary care and
specialty services to the varied San Francisco communities and interests. For example, at Glide Memorial Church in
the Tenderloin, our Young Women’s Clinic has provided prenatal care for about 30% of the pregnant teens in San
Francisco for more than 20 years. We know that many of you will benefit from these dynamic practices as you
participate in them in your clinical and administrative residencies.
The motto of the UCSF campus is “Advancing Health Worldwide” and you will find many opportunities as a student
to broaden your experience internationally with colleagues from nursing, medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. We are
one of seven U.S. schools of nursing that have been designated Collaborating Centers by the World Health
Organization. Our WHO Center is working to develop opportunities for you to share in our extensive international
collaborative nursing efforts, and we hope that you will take advantage of them while you are at UCSF.
These activities contribute to the UCSF School of Nursing’s reputation as one of the best schools of nursing in the
world. Our excellence is demonstrated most notably by our outstanding students. So this letter is a welcome to a
partnership in excellence. I hope you have a wonderful academic year!
Sincerely,
David Vlahov, RN, PhD, FAAN
Dean and Endowed Professor in Nursing Education
