Leitrim<br />

A <strong>DBO</strong> steering group meeting<br />

took place <strong>on</strong> 3 March.<br />

Trial drilling has commenced<br />

<strong>on</strong> a number of sites <strong>on</strong><br />

Aughnasheelin GWS,<br />

Ballinagleragh GWS and<br />

Leckaun GWS to determine<br />

the possibility of developing<br />

groundwater sources, where<br />

surface water sources are currently<br />

being used. The availability<br />

of a suitable groundwater<br />

source would reduce<br />

treatment costs for the six<br />

GWS (888 households)<br />

involved in this <strong>DBO</strong> bundle.<br />

Design review reports are<br />

expected to be completed in<br />

early May, following the<br />

results of the trial drilling.<br />

Advance works – including<br />

the installati<strong>on</strong> of meters <strong>on</strong> a<br />

number of GWS – will also<br />

be carried out in the coming<br />

m<strong>on</strong>ths.<br />

The AGM of Leitrim<br />

Federati<strong>on</strong> took place in early<br />

February and there was a<br />

large number of GWS represented.<br />

The committee elected<br />

includes Mary Bohan,<br />

Chairpers<strong>on</strong>, Margaret<br />

O’Rourke, Secretary and Pat<br />

Gallagher, Treasurer. Stanley<br />

Trotter, of Tawnyfeakle GWS<br />

and Margaret O’Rourke of<br />

Creevelea Killargue GWS<br />

were nominated to sit <strong>on</strong> the<br />

County Leitrim Rural Water<br />

M<strong>on</strong>itoring Committee.<br />

the NFGWS Management<br />

Training Course with their<br />

Colm Brady and Jean<br />

installati<strong>on</strong> of meters <strong>on</strong> the<br />

12 <strong>DBO</strong> GWS in the coming<br />

weeks. An informati<strong>on</strong><br />

evening took place <strong>on</strong> 21<br />

February, with representatives<br />

from Sligo County<br />

Council, the NFGWS, T. J.<br />

O’C<strong>on</strong>nor & Associates and<br />

Jennings O’D<strong>on</strong>ovan<br />

C<strong>on</strong>sulting Engineers <strong>on</strong><br />

hand to explain the costs and<br />

local c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s required.<br />

NFGWS development worker,<br />

Joe Gallagher, assisted a<br />

number of the GWS present<br />

in drawing up a financial plan<br />

to ensure that they remain<br />

viable and in a positi<strong>on</strong> to<br />

deal with their additi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

operati<strong>on</strong>al costs.<br />

Two other private GWS<br />

which were n<strong>on</strong>-compliant<br />

with water quality standards,<br />

Ballintogher GWS and<br />

Ballygawley GWS have c<strong>on</strong>nected<br />

to Sligo & Envir<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Regi<strong>on</strong>al Scheme.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>tinued from page 27<br />

Glynsk and Creggs<br />

The c<strong>on</strong>tract for this <strong>DBO</strong><br />

Project was signed with<br />

Veolia before Christmas.<br />

Work has commenced, with<br />

c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> expected to be<br />

completed this summer.<br />

Tenders have also been<br />

received for critical mains<br />

replacement and installati<strong>on</strong><br />

of meters and these c<strong>on</strong>tracts<br />

are expected to commence in<br />

the coming weeks. The c<strong>on</strong>tractor<br />

was introduced to the<br />

committee at a special meeting<br />

in February, which was<br />

also attended by members of<br />

Galway County Council and<br />

the NFGWS. A <strong>DBO</strong> Steering<br />

Group has also been formed to<br />

track progress <strong>on</strong> this project.<br />

Two meetings of Galway<br />

RWMC have taken place to<br />

date in 2005. With an allocati<strong>on</strong><br />

of ¤ 14 milli<strong>on</strong> under the<br />

RWP, a huge amount of work<br />

is expected in 2005.<br />

There are plans to c<strong>on</strong>nect<br />

the following GWS to the<br />

public mains:<br />

Balroebuckbeg,<br />

Bunnahelly/Kilcurrivard,<br />

Carragh, Clo<strong>on</strong>lahan/<br />

Claremadden, Clo<strong>on</strong>more/<br />

Killillane, Coolarne,<br />

Corbally, Garrafrauns,<br />

Gurteen/Clo<strong>on</strong>more,<br />

Kilbann<strong>on</strong>, Kilc<strong>on</strong>ly,<br />

Knockbrack and Moy.<br />

Upgrading works c<strong>on</strong>tinued<br />

<strong>on</strong> the following GWS:<br />

Corrofin, Gallagh, Killeen<br />

Poultallo<strong>on</strong>, Inver and<br />

Carraig Thia/Baile<br />

Dhubhloch. Kilchreest,<br />

Boyounagh Ballyedm<strong>on</strong>d,<br />

Fountain Hill and Loughwell<br />

schemes are also due to<br />

commence upgrading work<br />

over the coming m<strong>on</strong>ths.<br />

Kilc<strong>on</strong>ly GWS completed the<br />

management training course,<br />

while a number of other<br />

GWS are currently being<br />

trained by well known GWS<br />

activist, Gearóid de Faoite.<br />

Clare<br />

The AGM of Clare<br />

Federati<strong>on</strong> took place <strong>on</strong> 17<br />

February. Issues relating to<br />

<strong>DBO</strong> were discussed in great<br />

detail with the GWS present.<br />

The Part 8 process was completed<br />

<strong>on</strong> 21 February, following<br />

approval by the members<br />

of Clare County<br />

Council. The c<strong>on</strong>tract will be<br />

signed in the coming weeks<br />

and work is to start thereafter.<br />

Tender prices have been<br />

received at this stage and are<br />

very ec<strong>on</strong>omical for the<br />

GWS involved. A number of<br />

advance works project are<br />

being progressed in tandem<br />

with the <strong>DBO</strong> treatment <strong>projects</strong>,<br />

to ensure that the necessary<br />

infrastructure is in place.<br />

Sligo<br />

The 2 <strong>DBO</strong> bundles in<br />

County Sligo will be signed<br />

in a matter of weeks. Despite<br />

bad press following the most<br />

recent EPA reports, Sligo will<br />
