‘Preferred bidders’ emerge on DBO projects

Leitrim
A DBO steering group meeting
took place on 3 March.
Trial drilling has commenced
on a number of sites on
Aughnasheelin GWS,
Ballinagleragh GWS and
Leckaun GWS to determine
the possibility of developing
groundwater sources, where
surface water sources are currently
being used. The availability
of a suitable groundwater
source would reduce
treatment costs for the six
GWS (888 households)
involved in this DBO bundle.
Design review reports are
expected to be completed in
early May, following the
results of the trial drilling.
Advance works – including
the installation of meters on a
number of GWS – will also
be carried out in the coming
months.

The AGM of Leitrim
Federation took place in early
February and there was a
large number of GWS represented.
The committee elected
includes Mary Bohan,
Chairperson, Margaret
O’Rourke, Secretary and Pat
Gallagher, Treasurer. Stanley
Trotter, of Tawnyfeakle GWS
and Margaret O’Rourke of
Creevelea Killargue GWS
were nominated to sit on the
County Leitrim Rural Water
Monitoring Committee.

Tenders will be sought for the
installation of meters on the
12 DBO GWS in the coming
weeks. An information
evening took place on 21
February, with representatives
from Sligo County
Council, the NFGWS, T. J.
O’Connor & Associates and
Jennings O’Donovan
Consulting Engineers on
hand to explain the costs and
local contributions required.
NFGWS development worker,
Joe Gallagher, assisted a
number of the GWS present
in drawing up a financial plan
to ensure that they remain
viable and in a position to
deal with their additional
operational costs.

Ballygawley GWS have connected
to Sligo & Environs

Glynsk and Creggs
The contract for this DBO
Project was signed with
Veolia before Christmas.
Work has commenced, with
construction expected to be
completed this summer.
Tenders have also been
received for critical mains
replacement and installation
of meters and these contracts
are expected to commence in
the coming weeks. The contractor
was introduced to the
committee at a special meeting
in February, which was
also attended by members of
Galway County Council and
the NFGWS. A DBO Steering
Group has also been formed to
track progress on this project.

Two meetings of Galway
RWMC have taken place to
date in 2005. With an allocation
of ¤ 14 million under the
RWP, a huge amount of work
is expected in 2005.
There are plans to connect
the following GWS to the
public mains:
Balroebuckbeg,
Bunnahelly/Kilcurrivard,
Carragh, Cloonlahan/
Claremadden, Cloonmore/
Killillane, Coolarne,
Corbally, Garrafrauns,
Gurteen/Cloonmore,
Kilbannon, Kilconly,
Knockbrack and Moy.
Upgrading works continued
on the following GWS:
Corrofin, Gallagh, Killeen
Poultalloon, Inver and
Carraig Thia/Baile
Dhubhloch. Kilchreest,
Boyounagh Ballyedmond,
Fountain Hill and Loughwell
schemes are also due to
commence upgrading work
over the coming months.

Kilconly GWS completed the
management training course,
while a number of other
GWS are currently being
trained by well known GWS
activist, Gearóid de Faoite.
Clare
The AGM of Clare
Federation took place on 17
February. Issues relating to
DBO were discussed in great
detail with the GWS present.
The Part 8 process was completed
on 21 February, following
approval by the members
of Clare County
Council. The contract will be
signed in the coming weeks
and work is to start thereafter.
Tender prices have been
received at this stage and are
very economical for the
GWS involved. A number of
advance works project are
being progressed in tandem
with the DBO treatment projects,
to ensure that the necessary
infrastructure is in place.
Sligo
The 2 DBO bundles in
County Sligo will be signed
in a matter of weeks. Despite
bad press following the most
recent EPA reports, Sligo will
