STEDS
The use of vacuum sewers
and Septic Tank Effluent
Drainage Systems (STEDS)
had, the Minister stated,
emerged as ‘a cost-effective
alternative to conventional
gravity and pumped sewerage
systems in other countries’.
This system collects effluent
from existing septic tanks
and transfers it through a
small diameter PVC pipe for
treatment at a central location.
Minister Roche concluded
that STEDS ‘should help
solve some of the more common
problems with septic
tanks, including ponding and
run-off of effluent, with
resulting odours and the risk
to local watercourses and
groundwaters’.
