I By Erin R. Sprankle
"When my granddaughter was born, I didn't think
that I would live to see her go to kindergarten,"
LouAnn reminisced during a recent interview. Today
she is making arrangements to attend her
granddaughter's graduation. Diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy
at the age of 31, LouAnn Rest has lived
the past 25 years with the constant reminder that her
heart could fail at any time. When her sister died at
the age of 28 with heart complications, she took the
doctor's advice of being tested for a genetic form of
Cardiomyopathy of which she tested positive. Carefully
monitoring her health and abiding doctor's
orders, she has consumed her fair share of medications
and limited activities. Resigned to live each
day the best she can, LouAnn has reached the age of
56, however the past 12 months have been lived
exceptionally better than the past.
L
ouAnn, a resident of The Villages, loved
all that her neighborhood had to offer.
Activities galore, shopping, restaurants,
even nightly live entertainment at the Town Square.
However, simply attending the activities left her
exhausted. Last year her neighbor showed her an
advertisement in the newspaper for Regenocyte Therapeutic.
The advertisement was for a seminar being
conducted by Dr. Zarmos Grekos in The Villages on
the topic of Adult Stem Cell therapy and how it was
being used to treat many life-threatening diseases, in
particular, Cardiomyopathy. Intrigued, LouAnn
attended the seminar. Amazed with the presentation
that the body can use itself to treat disease, LouAnn
decided quickly that the therapy was for her. Because
LouAnn has never suffered a massive heart attack, she
could never be placed on a transplant list. Leaving no
option unturned, she had begun the routine testing for
a transplant so that she could be in line for a new heart
if she ever encountered and survived an attack. Progressive
with the idea of having a better quality oflife,
LouAnn loved this option of adult stem cell therapy.
Someone else's heart would do, but the road to get
there was uncertain.
recipients Sandra Mueller and Nancy Marshall.
LouAnn's friends and family, committed to her health,
formed the Fast Cure Foundation. Fundraisers were
held and donations were gathered. She was amazed at
the generosity of everyone involved to help her. LouAnn
was scheduled for therapy eager to see the results.
The therapy, as unique as it sounds, is really very
simple. LouAnn had her blood drawn in the Regenocyte
office in Southwest Florida, just as any patient
would have done for a routine visit. Unlike, a routine
visit however, her blood was about to be hand couriered
across the ocean to a state-of-the-art laboratory in
Israel. Under the careful hands of medical scientists,
the stem cells were extracted from LouAnn's blood.
The cells were then multiplied to therapeutic strength
before they underwent the final preparation of being
educated to assist LouAnn's heart. The stem cells
were then couriered to the Dominican Republic where
LouAnn would be prepared for therapy.
Nestled in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is
home to the private hospital where this uncommon
therapy takes place. The medical trip takes on a
vacation-like feel. Understanding patients' nervousness
about traveling abroad for medical procedures,
Regenocyte has taken measures to ensure a pleasant
experience for all involved.
As LouAnn stepped off the airplane a personal guide,
that accompanied her through the city of Santo
Domingo to her hotel, hospital, and anywhere she
wanted to go for the brief few day trip, met her. "It
was amazing," LouAnn recalls the trip itself.
Prepared for therapy, LouAnn was more tban ready to
continue the task. The injection process is what makes
Regenocyte a distinct stem cell therapy company. Dr.
Grekos has chosen and trained cardiac physicians
with an exclusive specialized catheter. A team of
cardiac physicians uses this specialized injection
catheter device to deliver the cells directly into the
myocardium of the heart, thus being the only organization
in the world to provide a dual mode for the
delivery of stem cells; by injection directly into the
heart muscle and into the vascular system of the
heart. This procedure allows the stem cells to feed
directly to the area needing assistance. Because of
the ease of the catheter usage, patients have
minimal recovery time. Following the brief procedure,
LouAnn spent the night in the hospital under
observation and was released the following day.
She marveled at the fact that she was never alone, a
doctor and nurse were at her side the entire time
taking care of any need.
Returning home within 48 hours after treatment,
LouAnn settled back into life excited to notice
possible results. Taking a walk - something so
simple, yet not usually able to be enjoyed by
LouAnn. She noticed this pleasantry delightful. A
class for scrap booking - that was added to her
weekly schedule... and beading. While she's
already out, a painting class may as well be
enjoyed! LouAnn is almost giddy with the activities
she can now attend in her neighborhood. Her
feelings were justified when her doctor conducted a
follow-up appointment and measured her ejection
fraction rate, the rate at which her blood is pumped
into the left ventricle with each heartbeat. Prior to
therapy she recorded a 20% rate, now, a full year
after her procedure, she registers an incredible
43%. The Villages host different music groups in
their Town Squares every night, of which LouAnn
and her husband often enjoy. "Before, I would be
sitting on the sidelines watching everybody," she
stated thinking upon the past years of inactivity,
"now, I can dance."
Adult stem cell therapy cannot heal disease but it can
treat. LouAnn will always have Cardiomyopathy,
but now she lives more fully each day. LouAnn is
thankful for tbe opportunity to have attended the
educational seminar over a year ago. Speaking with
authority about the world of adult stem cell therapy,
