Bathroom secrets… 

From the yore of Turkish hammams to the magnificence of modern-day spa retreats… we all are 

well aware of how bathrooms have evolved and continued to pamper us over the years. The 

history of this essential space in the home has always intrigued me and I’ve come across quite a 

few quirky tidbits. For instance, bathrooms were considered unnecessary during prehistoric 

times. Only when man decided to stick around in a place long enough to make a home, did the 

essential washroom come about. The story of Turkey fine-tuning the hammam (public bath) is 

testimony of how splendid Asian architecture is. Today’s spa is quite possibly an offshoot of a 

typical Turkish hammam which has three rooms — the caldarium (for hot bath), the tepidarium 

(the warm room for bathing with soap and water); and the cool room for resting after the bath. 

During the Indus Valley civilization, efficient sanitary systems have beguiled us today with the 

vision Harappans possessed. This technology fed into underground 

drains flowing into cesspools. Smart, isn’t it? Then the most 

fascinating fact that Indians were way ahead of the British when it 

came to establishing rooms we could bathe in — Indian palaces in 

the 1700s had flush toilets and elaborate bathrooms replete with 

sink-in marble tubs. There’s so much fascinating information about 

the history of the bathroom… and the truth of the matter is, we 

haven’t stopped innovating. So this month, we celebrate the 

ingenuity that the bathroom has experienced.

It has been five years since I’ve been reading Better Interiors 

regularly and I must congratulate the editorial team for maintaining its 

editorial quality month-on- month. Though all the products and 

news-based features are exciting, it is the projects section which 

interests me the most. And I must particularly mention here, the 

covers for the last few months have been excellent. I realized that they 

are all part of the projects you have been featuring, and not the DIY’s… 

this is a refreshing change. Can you please continue to do the same 

going forward? Must congratulate you for the fantastic cover for the 

August issue and the absolutely well-written story in the inside pages. 

Interior designers Aamir Sharma and Hameeda Sharma’s home in 

Hyderabad was an absolute treat and I thought it definitely is not a 

“glorified junkyard” as the man of the house lovingly calls it. The house 

is beautiful, artistic and exudes an extremely unique aura. Looking 

forward to more such interesting stories and covers!

homes are a rarely seen. So, I was 

very happy to see the Mumbai 

home created by Nitido Interior 

Design. It was with no jazz, yet 

had all the requirements for a 

home. It was interesting to note 

that the project was finished on a 

war-footing. Please feature 

more such lovely projects in 

the magazine.

(WAf) theme for this year’s program is 

“50:50”. The world’s largest architectural 

festival and awards event is annually held in

environment; the forest and the

The Bhils have immense 

reverence for trees that they 

consider protector, mother and 

god. The cultural landscapes and 

practices of the community are 

shaped by this special 

relationship, evident with their 

marking of trees by stones. These 

foraging tribes have a lifecycle 

from birth that is deeply 

interlinked with the forest where 

seasonality and ceremony are all 

marked by trees in the forest. The 

book also highlights sadly the 

changing relationship between 

the Bhil people who were once 

foragers where the forest 

provided them everything and the 

rules of the land that has skewed 

this relationship. 

The ecological wisdom contained 

makes this a fascinating book not 

just for children alone but for 

adults as well. It manages to instil 

admiration for the Bhil community 

and their ecological practices and 

a bit of pride in our art and

says his engagement with this 

form of art started early. he cast 

his first bronze sculpture at the 

age of 13 and thus began his 

artistic journey. a graduate from 

Delhi University, Gagan gave up 

all other commitments and 

devoted his life to his art from 

2003. human figurines form the 

crux of his creative endeavours 

while bronze is his material of 

choice. The sculptor attempts to 

peek into his subconscious in 

order to go beyond the manifest 

and explore the sub text. Unfazed 

by contemporary trends, Gagan’s 

work is grounded in classical 

ideals of the Indian art form, but 

he has the ability to make himself 

visible in a modern context. 

he has shown his works at several 

exhibitions including Yoga Chakra

Delhi (June 2015); Threshold –

designer stefan Rurak’s sandy 

Project is an initiative to transform 

timber salvaged from the hurricane 

sandy into items of beauty and 

utility. stefan has been fascinated 

with Zen Buddhism and its powerful 

parallels which drove him to 

apprentice with New York City’s 

most respected custom 

woodworker, Palo samko. after 

learning under his tutelage, he then 

founded the sR studio (2011) based 

on the vision that furniture cannot 

only fulfil functional needs but also 

have the expressive power of fine 

art. In the aftermath of the 

hurricane, stefan began carefully 

selecting pieces of fallen sugar 

maple and walnut. he would 

repurpose them into furniture and 

jewellery. The stump stool by stefan 

features repurposed slices of sugar 

maple that have been uniquely 

shaped to render a scooped-out 

seat for comfort. The stool’s legs 

and the base are made of walnut. 

since each piece is made to order, a 

stool or bench can take three to four 

weeks to complete. a portion of the 

furniture sales is donated to the 

Mayor’s fund.

It all started with this curiosity of the blue-prints... they 

were fascinating. The interesting thought of how an

into architecture college this passion found its own form 

in almost everything I laid eyes on… right from clothing, 

shoes, automobiles and even visual communication.

exhibitions and advertising get my adrenaline pumping as 

it is more of a time-bound venture. Interiors and 

architecture are more refined and planned.

across your work? 

Client’s reflection. It’s the client’s need, thoughts and 

lifestyle which we shape, enhance and realize. This comes 

across in all our works, be it advertising, exhibitions, 

interiors or architecture. 

what is your take on the state of architecture and 

design in India today? 

architecture and design has come to centerstage now. 

People are design-conscious and aware. a lot of innovative 

products and solutions are on offering today, but sadly 

aren’t manufactured in India. We need a lot more 

innovation on products done here in India, which would 

eventually put Indian products on the global market. 

oN A lIghTeR NoTe... 

how do you unwind? 

a long walk along the beach always does 

the trick. sometimes, even cycling works. 

given a choice… the country you 

would shift base to? And why? 

Youngistan! The cleaner, greener and 

more civilized India which we all need to 

shape up. Lets do our bit and I am sure 

we’ll be there in no time. 

The one thing you would save if your

Phone! else how would I call the

The funniest moment in your 

design career? 

an intern once for a project, was assigned 

to get photographs framed. We were 

shocked to see when the frames arrived 

without any photos in them.

Khosla Design Studio 

1 Exquisite Italian marble and 

black Brazilian gold floor creates 

the shell of this impressive 

bathroom Annkur created for a 

Bangalore home. The sculptural 

black granite washbasin has 

been hand-carved and goes 

well with the fantastic Jeeves & 

Wooster Hat Light suspended 

from the ceiling. Interestingly, 

the mirror is integrated in the 

sliding window which overlooks 

the courtyard beyond. Being next 

to the courtyard, and to bring 

the outdoors in, the architect 

introduced a dry landscape feature 

with polished granite pebbles. 

2 Everything is natural and earthy 

in this calming bathroom which 

sees sand-blasted Jaisalmer gold 

on the walls and polished Jaisalmer 

on the floor and the counter top. 

A bespoke vanity counter here 

flaunts beautiful printed motifs 

and enhances to the royal feel of 

the bathroom. A lavish jacuzzi is 

set on a elevated platform and 

is bathed in warm light from the 

dome-shaped Flos chandelier. A 

Yusuf Arakkal painting completes 

the look.

3 Annkur says, “Material change 

and design planning can alter 

the experience of a space.” 

And this bathroom is a perfect 

example. Teamed with the beige 

agglomerate marble flooring, the 

beautiful Spanish printed tiles 

catches your attention the moment 

you enter this space. The marble 

is extended to the counter top of 

the vanity which holds twin wash 

basins from Kohler. This minimal 

bathroom also had sleek glass 

shutter wardrobes from Nolte.

1 A bathroom which can easily 

pass off as a living room of a 

house… this one is designed 

for a family in Gurgaon. An 

extensive walk-in wardrobe 

leads to this bathroom with a 

large shower enclosure. Here, 

the floors and walls are draped 

in Grey William Italian marble 

and sees treated hardwood on 

the countertop with a lacquered 

floating vanity for company. 

The Buddha, the blue bench 

and the clock has also been 

specially sourced by the team 

for this house.

2 Designed for a young occupant, 

this bathroom flaunts a large 

artwork by Satyajeet Shinde 

(set against a textured veneer), 

right above the water closet. 

Interestingly, the flush plate has 

a coveted place, a large special 

counter has been created to 

accommodate it… which can 

also display some accessories. A 

Foscarini lamp, Valdama basin, 

Gessi fittings and a stautario 

marble counter top are the 

other highlights here.

3 A bachelor’s bathroom, this one 

is sans a conventional door — slip 

glass (which can become opaque 

with the slightest touch) is a wall 

between the bedroom and the 

bath. A black theme runs through 

this space with Versace tiles on 

the floor and wall, with quartz (on 

the counter top and back 

of the water closet), to break 

the monotony. 

4&5 This gorgeous master bathroom 

for a couple in Gurgaon has 

the luxury of a calming vertical 

garden in the courtyard running 

next to it; and a beautiful lake 

beyond it. The flooring here 

is stautario marble with deck 

flooring in the courtyard and 

veneer and composite stautario 

on the counter top. If you note 

the vanity it would seem almost 

floating… it is created from marine 

ply and topped with lacquer. As 

the couple likes to spend a lot of 

time in this relaxing bathroom, 

a mirror television is set next 

to the large mirror which runs 

alongside the vanity. The shower 

area is spacious and sees leatherfinished 

grey marble flooring.

1&2 This master bathroom of a luxurious and 

beautifully-crafted Delhi home flaunts some 

exquisite materials. The bespoke lacquered 

black vanity is set against a large mirror 

which gives the space a grander feel. A freestanding 

bathtub is set against an intricately 

carved jaali-patterned screen and is bathed 

in warm light from the antique chandelier. 

Italian marble on the floor coupled with 

the warm wooden panelling make this a 

glamourous room. 

3 Also part of the Delhi house, this powder 

bathroom will leave anyone awe-struck. A 

beautiful collection of colourful handmade 

ceramic plates are strewn across a red 

laminated door which opens up to the 

powder room. Rich silk ties, lined up on a 

rod create drama and provide an element 

of surprise. You can’t miss the face of 

Napolean created out of mosaic tiles 

reflected on the mirror. Lastly, the standalone 

floor wash basin and the unusual 

suspended lights make this powder room a 

ravishing one. 

4, 5&6 Extravagant, generous and gorgeous… this 

master bathroom for a Mumbai residence 

belongs to a young owner in his late 20’s. 

Hence, the architects decided to create a 

lavish, dynamic and sporty private space. 

The most striking and unifying element of 

this large bathroom is the Bisazza floor — an 

unusual premium pattern in a black and white 

hue. Ample storage is provided in the white 

lacquered vanity which is neatly set against 

a large mirror which runs along this furniture 

piece. Complementing the vanity is the white 

marble counter top for the twin basins from 

Gessi. The shower cubicle has Greek Thassos 

marble walls and is set next to the relaxing 

jacuzzi which affords views of the expansive 

ocean and palm trees. If one is not gazing 

at the sea, then the lovely Flos Skygarden 

ceiling lamp is a deserving substitute. To add 

more wow-factor, the architects brought in 

a stunning Dolphin sculpture from New York 

which is made entirely from metal scraps. 

Then, there is also the impressive Dipoli 

White side table crafted in ceramic from the 

famous Andrew Martin.

The Orange Lane 

1&2 The design philosophy followed in the 

bathrooms of this Mumbai bungalow was 

to seamlessly weave the washrooms in the 

same design fabric as the house. Hence, the 

use of ethnic wall niches, painted shutters, 

Gaudi- inspired ceiling treatments, and 

artwork in the washrooms can be seen 

in them… all contribute to elevating the 

space. Seen here is the powder bathroom 

with niches that have dual purpose — of 

storage as well as lighting. The impressions 

on the storage shutters have been carved 

onto white painted plywood and have 

been embedded in a marble counter. 

The impressions on the wall are done on 

plaster of Paris. The framed art work and 

towel holders all work as a team to keep 

the concept intact. The powder room had 

egg white finished clean walls and brightly 

coloured stained glass windows that adds a 

pop of colour. 

3&4 Shabnam says, “There is a lot more to 

washrooms than being a space that houses 

a water closet and wash basin. What excites 

is the challenge that is to transfer space 

that is predominantly functional into a 

space that exuberates leisure and ease. To 

achieve this through design is what excites 

me as a designer.” Therefore, in this master 

bathroom we see some interestingly play 

of materials, accessories and furniture. 

The grey marble flooring is offset with 

brightly coloured painted shutters and green 

distressed furniture to go with it. The wall 

niche used as shelves/storage is something 

ancient Indians have used in forts and homes. 

The jalli work painted on the storage shutters 

complements the beauty of the niches. The 

walls have been treated with marble and 

ethnic accessories. 

5&6 For Sagar Villa the client being a landscape 

designer by profession, one of the 

parameters kept in mind while designing 

was the aspect of the colour green. It can 

be witnessed in the guest bathroom which 

follows shades of sea green rough finish 

stones for walls. This contrasts well with the 

green granite (counter top) and slate flooring 

for the shower area. The granite counter is 

divided into two parts — the area below the 

sink is enclosed with hand-painted wooden 

shutters, while the other has open niches.

3&4 This bathroom for a Mumbai client complements 

the white Italian marble of the rest of the house 

and is done in a softer beige tone marble with a 

striking mosaic pattern (from Sicis), which runs 

above the eye level. The soak tub (from Kaesch) 

gives you an infinity feel as it fills up to the rim. 

The mosaic pattern forms a stark backdrop 

to the privately cornered tub area. A grab bar 

makes it practical for the user to use the tub 

comfortably. The large mirror above the counter 

adds depth to the bathroom, while soft lighting 

renders a warm glow. 

5&6 Created for a teenage girl, this bathroom is 

colourful and full of life. The architects wanted 

the space to flow freely like a young mind; 

therefore, there are more fluid surfaces. The 

requirement to have a separate shower space and 

an additional area where one can soak their feet 

and use as an alternative shower once in a while 

led them to craft a customized civil partition with 

a circular cut-out acting as a ledge for keeping 

products on display. The strong red floral mosaic 

pattern (from Sicis) floating behind the shower 

bench is visible from the other areas as well.

with family portraits captured 

in DIY paper frames, adding an 

interactive component to the house. 

Overlooking the inanimate images 

are animated sketches of The 

Simpsons’ characters, printed on 

transparent vinyl and later pasted 

on white doors.

With stakes riding high on spaces not adhering to a specific style, interior designers 

Disha Mehta and Ratica Jain of SwitchOver Studio, play the cards of experimentation 

and customization to deliver an idiosyncratic apartment in Mumbai.

For a home with an entrance 

doormat reading ‘kat le’ (get lost 

in english), you know this space 

belongs to patrons of fun and 

entertainment. Bringing the playful 

element to this 1,600 square-foot 

apartment are interior designers Disha Mehta 

and Ratica Jain — the brains behind the young 

design firm SwitchOver Studio. The duo is 

driven by the philosophy to give substance to 

every client’s vision using their design 

sensibilities and on-site prowess. and for this 

apartment, they transformed the client’s 

sense of humour into endearing moments that 

make you say with a smile, “oh, this is fun!” 

The site is a large 3-BHK apartment in 

suburban Khar, Mumbai, and the client is a 

young, modern couple with an unconventional 

lifestyle. “Free of preconceived ideas, they 

wanted an uncluttered pad to party and play 

cards while their eight year old son ran about 

playing football,” informs Ratica, about the 

brief. Driven by a relatively open-ended brief, 

basic specifications included providing white 

wardrobes, a place to lounge near the window 

overlooking trees in the living room and a 

non-standard dining table. In response to that, 

the interior designers created a shell in shades 

of white and grey, minimally packed with 

simplistically-crafted furniture. 

The duo started by revamping the outdoor 

lobby. a rustic grey wall sharply contrasts the 

brightly coloured potted plants fixed to it. 

Paying homage to the owners love for the 

fantastical Lord of the Rings movie and 

stressing on the aforementioned “kat le” 

instruction, is a sign above the door that reads 

‘no admittance, except on party business’ in 

the classic Lord of the Rings font. 

ensuring a continued crest in the creative 

frequency showcased in the corridor, just 

beyond the main door lies the dining space 

with its intriguing dining table. a favourite 

amongst the guests, the table is a raw piece of 

wood with knots and holes, matte polished 

with a mere 24 inches as its shortest width. 

Disha explains that it is largely a table for 

playing poker rather than for having a 

sit-down meal. For balancing the tense poker 

moments is an unusual mix of chairs and a 

bench. each chair is uniquely carved on site 

and painted in a different hue, providing the 

only set of bold colours that you will see in the 

house. adding a touch of British classic is the 

black and brown checkered upholstery, 

reminiscent of skirts donned by bagpipe 

playing Scottish men. 

The dining space is well lit with a large window 

and natural-white track lights. Visually 

separating the living and the dining is a two 

feet wide column artfully transformed into a 

classical column with mouldings. Physically, 

loose pieces of a two-seater sofa, a threeseater 

sofa and an inviting leather armchair 

inconspicuously demarcate the living space. a 

29’ long and 9’ wide C-section suspended 

from the ceiling becomes the source of 

indirect warm-white lighting over this seating. 

Minimally executed and chic in appearance, it 

is the cove lighting without a false ceiling. 

as it was a big living room, the client wanted 

to capitalize on the view outside. This led 

to designing an informal seating on a raised 

platform by the window, at the other end of 

the room. It was minimally furnished with an 

Indian seating and a pouffe. This nest being a 

significant requirement of an extremely short 

list of requirements, the designers made 

sure that it was well curated with complete 

attention to detail. “The raised platform 

is clad with black tiles cut and fixed in a 

herringbone pattern,” says Disha. Here, the 

interior designers showed-off their sartorial 

skills by hanging bespoke curtains — they 

stitched a line of red pom-poms adding focus 


{CentreStage} Habitat Habitat 

The entrance had a grey matte-finished wall that 

was later scraped to give it a rustic look. Setting 

the playful tone of the house is the disclaimer 

that admittance is reserved only for those willing 

to party. Balancing the grey wall and the funny 

elements are the warm hued plants growing out 

of vibrant coloured pots. 

Predominantly following a palette of cool colours, 

the living and dining areas look contemporary 

and classy. In the living area, standing out against 

the neutral coloured shell are the wooden coffee 

tables. Made using salvaged wood, the raw 

quality is retained by sanding it on site and simply 

polishing it to a mat finish.

is stunning, wherein a horizontal line runs 

across the 

living room and bleeds into the guest 

bedroom sheers, adds visual continuity 

between the 

two spaces, making it appear 

volumetrically expansive. 

toP: The living room seating encourages you to put your legs up and relax with a glass of whisky while 

playing on the X-box, resonating the ‘fun’ vibe of the clients. In keeping with minimalism, the vastness 

of the space is accentuated by breaking the living room wall and connecting it to the guest bedroom 

with a modern glass partition. This along with the living room curtains continuing into the guest room 

adds flow and visual connectivity. 

above: One of the most important part of the client brief was to provide for an intimate space by the 

window in the living room. This is done with a raised platform that physically divides the space into 

a formal and an informal section. With the original parapet wall broken, the low Indian seating and 

pouffe become the ideal lounging seats for looking outside the French windows. 

a solution to accentuating the vastness of the 

living room is their ingenious play of volumes. 

For greater open space, they broke down the 

living room wall and provided a modern glass 

partition to the guest bedroom. Minimally 

furnished, the guest bedroom just has a 

sofa-cum-bed. For maximum storage, full 

length wardrobes were provided behind the 

powder bathroom. abutting that, and 

accessible from the living room is the recessed 

bar behind plain white doors. The powder 

bathroom, adjacent to the guest bedroom, has 

an interesting play of colours, patterns and 

textures. an artwork of Moroccan patterns in 

soft shades of grey, blue and yellow become 

the floor and the intricacy of the pattern is 

beautifully carved into the ceiling. The gold of 

the bathroom fittings and the vibrant green of 

the plants seen through the window, bring in 

focus to the space. not commonly seen these 

days, the pedestal basin is another smart 

addition to the powder bathroom. 


Habitat 

concePt: to provide an uncluttered, open space with ample storage, a corner by the window to enjoy the 

morning chai and a dining table that doubles up as a poker table. 

Replete with experimentation, the designer 

duo moulded the ordinary into pleasantly 

surprising elements. “For the passage we 

designed a photo wall of white handmade 

frames hung with wooden cloth-pins on 

twisted metal wires. The idea is to keep this 

wall interactive by changing the pictures and 

the configuration,” asserts Disha. On a similar 

note, announcing entry from the passage to 

the master bedroom and the eight year old 

son’s room are vinyl printed sketches of 

america’s famous animated sitcom, The 

Simpsons — Homer with Marge Simpson 

and Bart Simpson, pasted on their 

respective doors. 

Behind smiling figures of Mr and Mrs Simpson 

is the tranquil master bedroom. Here, sheer 

curtains that fade from blue to white, loosely 

brushing against a collage of light and dark 

brown flooring. Squint your eyes and it feels 

like standing on a pristine white beach staring 

at a calm sea fading into the clear white sky. 

The staggered wooden flooring seems to be a 

result of the sea rolling up to the shore and 

then receding back, pulling the grains with it. 

Sedimentation of blue, ochre and white sea 

salts translates into the headboard fabric. 

“The master bedroom like the rest of the 

house had to be white. Here, the main

existing window is modified to 

suit the narrow proportions of the 

bathroom. Moroccan patterns of 

the flooring tiles are replicated in 

fibre moulds and cast in POP on the 

ceiling. The subtle shades of grey, 

yellow and blue make for a cool and 

fresh ambience.

accompanied with a frangipani providing 

oxygen to play for longer hours. a balcony, 

running around the guest bedroom and the 

living room is made accessible by lowering the 

parapet wall to make it a facade of French 

windows. This space is set to become a patch 

of green complementing the green trees 

beyond. Like sand castles tactfully moulded 

out of sand, Disha and Ratica deconstruct and 

translate the quirky sense of humour into a

a spiritual businessman, P&D Associates create a warm and pious 

space with some intricately rendered craftsmanship.

refreshing effect. Shades of brown 

to incorporate a sense of warmth 

come through the furniture, the 

lamps and the panel behind the 

media unit. 



Like a boomerang, good and honest 

work will always end in karmic 

gratification, coming back to you in 

plentiful. That is exactly what 

happened with Bharuch-based 

interior designers Devang Patel and 

Pratik Siddhpura of P&D Associates. When it 

was time for their client, Mukesh Shah to get his 

home constructed and designed on a plot in 

Bharuch, he approached this talented duo on 

recommendation from a friend. Devang and 

Pratik believe in respecting a client’s 

perspective and needs. They design spaces to 

be an epitome of comfort, class and Indian 

minimalism. The designers were entrusted the 

task of not only building (yes, they worked on 

the structure too) a bungalow, but also the 

interior design of a space for a family of six (the 

client and his wife, two children, and parents). 

A businessman and a strong devotee of Lord 

Shrinathji, the client’s brief was simple — a 

home that’s spacious and reflective of their 

spiritualism. The bungalow, a 2,300-squarefoot 

space is spread across a ground and first 

floor, and terrace. Built on a plot size of 

1,900-square-foot, the home has three 

bedrooms, a living room, dining and kitchen, a 

family room and a pooja room. As the designers 

had discussed every small design and functional 

requirement with the entire family; and having 

worked on the details meticulously right at the

teak unites the two spaces. 

Like the other parts of the house, minimalism 

and purity are the key components of the pooja 

room. The small Krishna and Radha idols stand 

gracefully on a bed of rose petals. 

The first step into the house takes you to a small 

foyer area which has been accentuated with a 

bevelled mirror.

eginning of the project; the construction and 

execution stage was smooth sailing. 

Two distinct visuals greet when you spot the 

simple yet striking bungalow. First is the 

intricate lotus carvings etched on a block that 

forms a part of the main gate. These beauties 

are further accentuated with LED lamps. The 

second is the facade, which tricks the eye into 

seeing two separate entities. Essentially, they 

are the white concrete exterior (social spaces) 

and the other one sporting wooden tiles that 

accommodates the private spaces. 

The main door itself is a preface to the beauty 

that lies within. Made of teak with a brass

together. Travertine has been used for the wash area (seen behind). 

The lotus motif has been applied on the main gate as well as in the master bedroom. While beautiful 

mother-of-pearl inlay on a white stone is the centre of attention in the master bedroom, the carved 

and illuminated flowers on the gate create a tranquil aura. 

Devang and Pratik have used a one-piece handmade tile for panelling on one section of the master 

bath that looks like woven ribbons of concrete. 

Teak is the signature material of P&D Associates and they are known to use it beautifully in every 

project. An apt example of it is this magnificent teak door with a contrasting brass panel. 

As a staunch devotee of Lord Shrinathji, the client wanted his faith to be reflected in his home’s 

decor. This brass frame with embossed motifs of the Lord fulfils his wish in a delicate and artistic way. 

The family room on the first floor and the living area on ground floor have been designed in a 

similar fashion.

entrance is a small yet striking specimen of the 

stunning wood work that awaits one inside. 

Customized MS hanging LED lights (powdercoated 

black) at the entrance literally lights up the 

craftsmanship of the door. A foyer (right in the 

centre of the house) leads you to the living room on 

the left and on the right are the dining, kitchen and 

parents’ room. Brown, beige and white are the 

dominant colours in the living room as suggested by 

the facade. Encased in a wooden frame, brass 

Shrinathji figures sit subtly on the feature wall here. 

The coffee table (with its L-shaped striped design) 

and the media unit are specimens of the beautiful 

craftsmanship that Devang and Pratik are known 

for. A warm ambience is created with rich suede 

upholstered sofas; decorative veneer panels behind 

the media unit; and a paper lamp as the centre 

piece. The open kitchen and dining area have a 

minimal and clean design. The table and chairs are 

made of teak with white onyx used as the table top. 

The parents’ room was designed on the ground 

floor, keeping in mind their age and limitation of 

movement. Simple and serene, it comprises a bed 

with a brown leather headrest, a side table and a 

small wardrobe.

displays a decorative veneer panel along with 

printed vitrified tiles. A pooja room was designed 

right above the foyer and opposite to the steps 

landing on the first floor. Devoid of ostentation, the 

space reverberates with spirituality with extensive 

latticework created out of wood and metal. 

A clean look has been achieved in the master 

bedroom with the focus element being the 

mother-of-pearl inlay on the white stone wall. 

Teak flooring and side panels create a 

warm ambience. 

A master bath and dressing area forms a part of the 

master bedroom. Keeping true to the client’s 

insistence for Indian spiritual motifs, the national 

flower finds its way on the wall behind the bed. 

These mother-of-pearl lotuses have been carved 

on white stone while teak panels lay on both sides. 

Then there is warmth and serenity with the rich 

teak hard wood flooring. The Italian marble 

bathroom has one side of the wall (behind the wash 

basin) made of a single piece of hand-made tiles 

showcasing a woven effect. 

Colour has been used generously albeit with care 

in the kids’ bedroom. Meant for a boy and a girl, 

it features a black-and-white collage on canvas 

with the children’s photographs.

In contrast, the children’s room is splashed with 

vibrancy, albeit in a restricted manner. This has 

been achieved by hanging a colourful fan with a 

light from the ceiling and furnishing the bed with 

bright bed linen. However, the key design element 

is a horizontal strip of a black-and-white collage 

that recounts the kids’ prized moments. 

The huge terrace above has been demarcated by a 

box-like structure on one side. The ceiling has a 

glass top, beneath which is an encasing of MS bars 

(painted brown). One side of the wall too has these 

MS bars as a divider, which throws beautiful 

shadows as the sun moves from morning to 

evening. A jhoola (a quintessential Gujarati decor 

feature) hangs from the ceiling on one side while 

comfy chairs are placed opposite it. Ample natural 

light seeps through the glass roof during the day, 

while one can gaze at the stars at night. 

Devoid of over-the-top interiors, accessories or 

colours, this home would have risked being austere 

and mundane, however the designers have expertly 

circumvented the challenge. They have brought life, 

warmth and a calming effect to the home with their 

simplicity, materials and textures.

Seldom do you see a lounge or even 

a coffee shop conceptualized 

solely from materials that are 

recycled and natural. These days, 

a party hub or place to hang out 

with friends is full of loud lights 

and overdone interiors. However, Brown Sugar 

cafe and Lounge, nestled in a posh locality 

called C-Scheme in Jaipur, has an aura of its 

own. It’s earthy, classy and edgy. 

Initially, Brown Sugar started off as a small 

bakery in 2011 by Vishal Jalani. The owner then 

decided to take onto something bigger and 

better. The entrepreneur kicked off this dream 

with a new 1,800-square-foot commercial 

space nestled in an apartment building in 

2014. “We zeroed down on the name Brown 

Sugar because it is key ingredient of our 

cakes, coffees and desserts,” elucidates Vishal. 

Earlier on in 2011, the young restaurateur had 

entrusted his childhood friend and architect 

Akshit Tholia and his wife Astha Tholia with 

the design of his bakery. The duo is the muscle 

behind Graphite Design Studio, a young 

architectural firm conceived in 2012 that 

has undertaken a couple of residential and 

office projects. 

This cozy al fresco nook was 

specially made to accommodate 

larger groups of 12. The seating is 

made from wood and is upholstered 

with brown leatherette whereas the 

quirky seating for two, besides the 

pergola has been upcycled from 

bicycle tyres. 

Created by Graphite Design Studio, Brown Sugar Cafe and 

Lounge in Jaipur shuns conventional design and experiments 

with a gamut of eco-friendly materials. The result is a gorgeous 

and eclectic bistro that embraces nature with open arms.

The brief was quite straightforward. “The 

explicit requirement was a multi-cuisine cafe 

and lounge, which every age group could 

connect to, especially the youth,” explains 

Akshit. “It should be able to combine a bakery, 

lounge and cafe rhythmically and must house 

a variety of seating arrangements. Lastly, one 

of the most important concerns of a 

restaurateur — a kitchen and beverage 

counter that would enable things to flow 

smoothly and not hamper the service provided 

to customers.” The site came demarcated with 

indoor and outdoor areas — 1,000 sq ft 

(inside) and 800 sq ft (outside). Thankfully, 

the structural work was minimal. The basic 

design idea was to create a bistro reminiscent 

of Parisian cafes. “The minute we suggested 

the idea of a restaurant that’s raw, industrial

and bistro-like, Vishal couldn’t help but 

envision this space just as we had proposed,” 

informs Astha. “Our choice of materials was 

also organic, bearing in mind the budget,” 

she adds. 

ToP The bright yellow scooter that bedecks Brown Sugar’s foyer is known to draw people’s attention 

and also gets many to pause at the entrance for a memorable picture. The back-lit acrylic and wooden 

Brown Sugar logo rests on a reclaimed pine wood wall besides the gate that unveils the al fresco 

area of the bistro. The surrounding area and pathway embraces greenery with open arms due the 

innumerable frangipani trees in graphite planters and tall bottom palms. 

Below To add to the Parisian look of the cafe, Brown Sugar houses a wooden pergola that 

accommodates three wooden lounges. The planters and lights add a sweet charm to the space. 

Although the cafe is discreet, it is still 

conspicuous due to the back-lit acrylic and 

wooden logo which beckons visitors just like 

moths to a flame. What catches your eye first 

is a vintage yellow scooter parked against the 

backdrop of a low pine rafter wooden wall. 

“This quirky piece now gets guests to pause 

for a memorable picture,” informs Akshit. The 

low wooden gate, beside the logo, unveils the 

al fresco area of the establishment. As you 

make your way through, the different outdoor 

seating arrangements will leave you baffled. 

Almost all of them are custom made and one 

or two are hand-picked from a local market. 

One seating for two on the left is made from 

recycled bicycle wheels that can still rotatable. 

Some others are wooden high bar style chairs 

and tables. There’s also bench-style seaters 

made from wrought iron and finished in old 

style patina paint with contrasting bright 

yellow cushioning. 

While inside, patrons don’t miss out on what’s 

happening outside thanks to a stained glass 

sectional door, which on a pleasant day folds 

up completely to merge the two sections. A

to an acid-stained one. The two 

work perfectly to achieve the raw 

industrial look. 

The distressed and raw look of the 

four-seater brings in a sense of oldworld 

charm to this space.

used in the interiors… from acid-stained 

cemented walls to bare exposed brick walls 

which lend a grungy withered tone. Acidstained 

concrete and wooden flooring,

finished stained glass collapsible metal door 

are some of the other materials used. 

ToP All the services here are left untouched deliberately to achieve an 

industrial look. Even the cassette air-conditioners are clad with recyclable 

pine wood painted in a distressed ivory hue. Brown Sugar also finds a way to 

incorporate blue pottery art which is the essence of the city in the railings 

seen here.

The duo has also found a way to incorporate the 

essence of the city in the restaurant. The 

famous blue pottery art of Jaipur finds itself on 

serving tools, as tiles in customized iron railings 

and in the mirror and wash basin of the 

powder bathroom. 

If the space already seems to delight you, the 

food follows, too. Melt-in-the-mouth cottage 

cheese steaks, lip-smacking Italian sizzlers and 

scrumptious home style lasagnas are some of 

the many much-loved dishes here, while the 

After Eight shake is perfect on a hot day. Pizzas, 

pastas, comfort food like nachos, nuggets and 

fries, and shakes like the Dutch Truffle, Peanut 

butter, Oreo and Rocky Road sit comfortably on 

the menu alongside some all-time favourites. 

It’s Parisian, warm, classy and edgy. It’s rich in 

materials and each piece here is fashioned with 

great thought, keeping Mother Nature’s 

sentiments in mind. The Brown Sugar Cafe and

LG India’s latest offering is an All-in-one Microwave Oven with Charcoal

stark. What’s wonderful about this 

three-bedroom bungalow in 

Bharuch created by P&D 

Associates is that it has found the 

right balance; it’s neither 

overdone nor too simple. The 

mother-of-pearl inlay on the 

white stone wall, the hand-made 

tile in the master bath that seems 

like concrete woven ribbons and 

the black and white collage in the 

children’s room add oodles of 

style to this abode. My favourite 

space comes to be the sittingcum-lounge 

area created on the 

terrace. I could completely lose 

track of time swinging away on 

that lovely jhoola.

Everyone has their favourites and the Better Interiors team is no exception. 

Sure, we are a bunch of committed ‘unbiased’ folk who report on design 

trends faithfully... but we also drool and how! 

Pg 90 Having worked for architecture/interior design magazines for a 

few years now, I come across a disparate variety of spaces, designs and 

talent… some I find mundane or boring while some leave me awe-struck. 

The apartment in Mumbai, designed by SwitchOver Studio (featured in the 

Habitat section) is one such project that I found to be completely charming 

and wonderful. The space does not have any ostentatious decor or 

stunning pieces of furniture, but a happy and playful vibe that makes one 

feel instantly at home. The vast space, the Simpsons sketches, mismatched 

furniture and the enchanting entrance strike a chord. I’d love to have a 

space like this for sure!

Pg 44 I’m a staunch believer in Lord Ganesha and every 

year we bring Ganeshji’s murti home for 10 days and the 

house is filled with relatives and friends joining us in aarti and 

feasting on modaks. My mother, who is a great devotee of 

Ganesha too, has been collecting big and small figures of the 

Lord since years and treats them as her prized possessions. 

Therefore, when I laid eyes on the Ganesh Natraj idol 

featured in Swish List, I thought of my mother. This beautiful 

statue in a dancing pose I know will be very expensive, but I 

would love to gift it to my mother.
