Inspiring girls in business
By CHARLIE SCOTT
Wintec student journalist
Te Awamutu-based
small business coach
Jennifer Myers is asking
the community’s backing
for her plans to
inspire young female
would-be entrepreneurs.
Ms Myers entered the
AMP Do Your Thing
competition with hopes
to secure funding for
coaching
and
empowering 13 to17-yearolds
to entrepreneurial
success.
Up against 266 other
entrants, winning the
$10,000 scholarship
would allow Ms Myers
the opportunity to
empower young women.
“That time of life is
where you’ve got all
these thoughts in your
head of who you’d like to
be,” Ms Myers said.
Ms Myers plans to
hold one-day workshops
in Hamilton, Auckland,
Wellington, Christchurch
and Dunedin.
The girls will be
chosen to attend based
on a brief piece of
writing submitted on a
selected topic.
During the
workshops, 50 to 100 girls
The group is organising
a fitness challenge —
a ‘Pretty in Pink’ team
crusade as a Breast Cancer
Month community
activity — endorsed by
the New Zealand Breast
Cancer Foundation’s and
can be found on its
events calendar.
Activities include two
2km runs, 800 air squats,
600 press-ups, 400
burpees and 200 sit-ups
within a two hour
timeframe.
There needs to be four
BUSINESS coach Jennifer Myers is a finalist in the
AMP Do Your Thing regional scholarships competition.
will be broken into small
groups and paired with
businesswomen from
their area.
After listening to a
high-profile speaker, the
girls will then be allowed
question and answer
time.
And playing business
in a team and at least one
of them must be female
— 17 teams have already
registered.
It costs $20 per team to
enter and registrations
close on October 4 with
all proceeds going to The
New Zealand Breast Cancer
Foundation to help
fund vital research projects
and support recovering
from and living
with breast cancer.
Any businesses who
would like to donate
appropriate items for
games will sharpen their
entrepreneurial skills.
Growing up in North
Carolina, in the United
States, Ms Myers had her
own mentor, Kae
Grageur.
“She taught me how to
knit; she taught me how
to swim. She was
prizes are most welcome
to do so.
Organisers would like
everyone to dress up, have
fun and spread some
kindness. The event is being
held on Sunday, October 11
from 9.30am at the Te
Awamutu Events Centre.
married, but her husband
wasn’t particularly
interested in travel. So,
she’d go off all by herself,”
Ms Myers said.
Ms Myers thinks it
important to have a role
model who is not a
parent.
And it is that
mentoring opportunity
that she wants to provide
to the girls of New Zealand.
“So I suppose the
question would be – if
you’ve got a teenage girl
in your life that you care
about, would this be
something you’d like to
see them go through?”
Ms Myers plans to
have the workshops up
and running by April/
May 2016.
And, even if she does
not receive the scholarship,
she plans to
implement the
workshops in Hamilton.
The funding would
allow her to use her
networks to reach the
wider community of
young women nationwide.
