Winner of four awards including overall winner of the evening, Annangrove residence by DeiCorp AND THE WINNER IS… For more than 20 years, designers and builders in the Hills Shire have excelled at providing beautiful houses on large lots. But as the market changes, so do they Edited by Holly Cunneen Year after year, builders and designers within Sydney’s Hills Shire have continued to make their district one of the most desirable places to live. Many young families — and couples nearing retirement — pack up their bags and choose to swap the hassles of inner-city living for the wide roads, open spaces and large lots that go hand in hand with life in the suburbs. Earlier this year, the mayor of The Hills Shire Council spoke at the 21st annual Hills Building and Design Awards about the challenges faced by the council and industry as the demands of the housing industry shift. As the inner-city suburbs of Sydney become increasingly overpopulated, the pull of the suburbs is harder to resist. The Hills Shire is starting to recognise large lots can’t be offered to everyone, and apartments and townhouses are gaining in numbers. “For decades, it has been our big homes on large blocks that have attracted tens of thousands of people to the Hills district,” says Mayor Andrew Jefferies. “Now, we face new challenges and the great Australian dream has changed.” The council and local design–build industry have worked collaboratively to build on the existing infrastructure and sense of community. Both parties encourage a knockdown–rebuild approach to help rejuvenate older suburbs and streets. They’re equally determined to continue to provide single-lot housing in addition to practical and sustainable high-quality apartments and townhouses. Lucky enough to have an expansive space to work with, the overall winner of the evening was not without a few challenges. DeiCorp secured four awards in total. However, the company was faced with the difficult task of integrating nature with the modern luxuries we all yearn for in its stunning Annangrove residence. The end result is all things modern, but the home’s backyard seamlessly takes on a tropical resort-style atmosphere. Extensive flowing spaces marry the modern, functional living aesthetic with the surrounding rural environment. Clearly, DeiCorp has set 242 | HOME DESIGN
