From the office of the GM/COO
Jeff Murray
Dear Members,
We are focused on our members getting the most out of
their club experience. The October calendar shows exactly
what I mean! This will be my second Que Paso with the
club. We have a full slate of great events planned. We are
changing up our family night a bit. We will offer a special
priced theme menu instead of the buffet. We will also be
adding a build your own s’mores on the patio to this great
night! Our live band will be the Coyote Brothers band
on October 14th. Gerald and Mike are putting together a
great nine and dine event on the course for October 10th.
Family tennis day will also be on October 10th. Kid’s club
will continue each Friday night with a different theme for
the kids. Pasta Bar is so successful we have added another
night, so there will be 3 Thursdays for Pasta Bar this month!
Our ladies will host the Pumpkin Tournament on the
24th and we will be having our GRAND HALLOWEEN
FAMILY FUN NIGHT on the 25th! This is an event you
all know and love, so sign up early as we fill up fast!
Mark your calendars for a couple of upcoming dates in
November. The Couples Cooking Class will be the 14th
along with a 9 hole night golf tournament! November 21st
will be our 2nd LADIES SPA DAY! We won’t stop there
with the excitement, but you will have to wait and see what
else is in store.
Our Annual Pay option for Executive Members was very
successful, over half of our members in that category got
in on the discount! It was a great way to reward our Full
Privilege Members. Thank you to all who participated.
Our membership drive has brought in 30 new members
since June. Julie has done a great job as Membership
Director! As always, there is a great deal of attrition at
our club with death, moving and too busy to enjoy. We
hope that you will help us continue the growth process by
sending in your contacts who are interested in joining the
club.
We have set up a golf reciprocal agreement with Rancho
Veijo Country Club. Members of our club can utilize the
Rancho golf course for $42 with a cart. You must set up a tee
time with the golf pro to play there. We are also offering an
introductory offer to the public to see our beautiful course
and play for $42 with a cart. The introductory offer to the
public ends November 30th. This is a great opportunity
for a non-member to experience our wonderful golfing
experience and hopefully want to join. Please let your
friends and neighbors know about this great opportunity
before it runs out.
We will be expanding our Winter Texan golfing program
this year. This is a great source of profitable revenue for the
club. We will be offering “Pay & Play” cards to the resort
residents in increments of 5 rounds. We also have a “Stay
& Play” package with the Marriott properties. This offers
business travelers the opportunity to enjoy a great round
of golf while in town. In addition to these options is our
tournament outreach. We have a few available spots for
golf tournaments. If you know of an organization that has
an outing, please let me know the contact information and
I will reach out. These are a few of the efforts that are listed
in our Business Plan presented at the Town Hall Meeting
last August.
In closing, I would like to thank the membership for
your outpouring of support. The Harlingen Country
Club family has a very strong core that stands by this club
through thick and thin. This support system gives us the
strength to preserver any storm that comes our way! I
look forward to seeing you at your country club!
A Message from
the President
Ricky Vaughn
It is starting to get to that time of the year that
attracts everyone to live in the Rio Grande Valley.
October is here and with that comes a little cooler
temperatures and ideal weather for outdoor
activities.
We have been very blessed this year with adequate
rain fall and our course is really showing it.
Currently the course is as lush as I have ever seen
it and with that comes that comes good and bad.
Jason and his crew continue to work very hard to
keep up with the daily maintenance of the course
along with tending to the greens. We are starting to
see continued improvement of the greens, this has
been a tough situation on everyone and I appreciate
everyone’s patience. Overall I think the greens have
come back nicely and are close. Jason still has a few
things he is working to improve and I think you will
see our greens 100% back very shortly.
The board just wrapped up its fall retreat and a lot
of good discussion came from the retreat. The board
is working very hard to bring you the experience
you are looking for in a Country Club. We continue
to tackle the issues that we covered at the Town Hall
Meeting, and we are making positive steps with these
issues. As I have stated membership is the key not
only with growing new members but in retention.
Harlingen Country Club has several options to offer
not only for potential new members, but also for all
current members as well. Our new pre-pay option
is showing to be very popular and this is a positive
for not only you as a member, but for the club also.
I feel very confident that we have started to make
a turn for the better and the rough times are behind
us.
Tee Talk
Michael Fernuik
October is here and the weather is gorgeous and cool.
The club will start having quite a few tournaments so
be sure to check the calendar in this newsletter for
information or ask Mike or Liz. Our winter friends will
start coming in so activity around the club should start
buzzing. Don’t forget to call for tee times.
I know it is early but Christmas will be here before
you know it. At the Golf Shop we will be getting new
clubs (toys) and apparel for men, women, and young
boys and girls. So shop early and avoid the last minute
rush. Come check us out. Popular brands such as Nike,
Footjoy, Titleist, and many more.
FEATS: We are always interested in your golf
accomplishments or even a funny story on the way to
the tee, let Liz or Mike know in the Golf Shop.
One of the club’s young golfer, Elijah Galvan, qualified
and was invited to the play in the STPGA Summer
Championships. He played at the Woodlands Palmer
Course in Houston. Elijah played in the 9-10 9-Hole
Modified Division. Elijah was the second youngest
competitor in the field and he shot a 2 day total of 91,
placed 27th. The Harlingen Country Club is very proud
of Elijah and he was proud to represent the club.
On Sept.10th, Durrell Lovell shot a beautiful 75.
Congrats.
On Sept. 10th also, Craig Lonon made a Hole in
One on number 15. His son in law was a witness, Eric
Resendiz. Congrats Craig. On September 12, Erwin
Sanchez shot his best score, a 79. Way to Go Doc.
Our Couples event, Wine and Dine in October will be
Guest Tournament will be happening on October 2-3-
the time of this newsletter writing this event is full with
two teams on the waiting list. As a reminder this year we
its monthly tournament. This month’s format is the
One Man Scramble. With this format you have the
opportunity to hit two balls every time and take the
best one. This event will be flighted with gross & net
prizes awarded in each flight. Tee off is a 9 AM shotgun.
The entry fee for this event is the $20. Lunch will be
available at the conclusion courtesy of your MGA.
More information and the sign up sheet are available in
the golf shop.
Thank you to all the members that contributed to
“Patriot Golf Day” over the Labor Day long weekend.
Because of your generous donations the club was able to
raise a significant dollar amount for the Folds of Honor
Foundation that provides post-secondary educational
scholarships to children and spouses of military men
and women killed or disabled while serving our Great
Nation.
Don’t forget about our shoe shine service that is
available upon request.
Also, as a reminder we are an Authorized PING
Fitting Center. What this means we are now better able
to customize a new set of clubs to the member giving
consideration to individual size, swing tendencies and
desired ball flight all during one session and under the
watchful eye of your PGA Professional on the driving
range. Seeing the results right out in front of you, can
be so much better than hitting into a net and having a
computer tell you what you need. Any questions or to
set up a fitting session call Mike at the golf shop.
