REMEMBERING
THE WORLD’S FAIR
This year’s OHNY Weekend coincides
with the 50 th anniversary of the
closing of the 1964-65 World’s Fair.
To mark the occasion, Open House
New York has lined up an exciting
list of sites and tours in Flushing
Meadows Corona Park, the site of
the fair, to remember the most iconic
World’s Fair in American history.
Once a dumping ground made famous as the
“Valley of Ashes” by F. Scott Fitzgerald in The
Great Gatsby, Flushing Meadows was originally
built as an elaborate fairground by Robert Moses
as the site of the 1939-40 World’s Fair. A little
more than two decades later, in an effort again
spearheaded by Moses, the park was reused
for the 1964-65 World’s Fair. With attendance at
more than 50 million, the fair is remembered as
a showcase of mid-century American modernism,
expressed in the curvilinear building forms made
possible by modern materials such as reinforced
concrete, fiberglass, plastic, and steel. Though
most of the pavilions were demolished or moved
after the fair ended, several were saved and have
become emblems of the city’s largest and most
diverse borough.
