THE WORLD’S FAIR<br />

This year’s <strong>OHNY</strong> Weekend coincides<br />

with the 50 th anniversary of the<br />

closing of the 1964-65 World’s Fair.<br />

To mark the occasion, Open House<br />

New York has lined up an exciting<br />

list of sites and tours in Flushing<br />

Meadows Corona Park, the site of<br />

the fair, to remember the most iconic<br />

World’s Fair in American history.<br />

Once a dumping ground made famous as the<br />

“Valley of Ashes” by F. Scott Fitzgerald in The<br />

Great Gatsby, Flushing Meadows was originally<br />

built as an elaborate fairground by Robert Moses<br />

as the site of the 1939-40 World’s Fair. A little<br />

more than two decades later, in an effort again<br />

spearheaded by Moses, the park was reused<br />

for the 1964-65 World’s Fair. With attendance at<br />

more than 50 million, the fair is remembered as<br />

a showcase of mid-century American modernism,<br />

expressed in the curvilinear building forms made<br />

possible by modern materials such as reinforced<br />

concrete, fiberglass, plastic, and steel. Though<br />

most of the pavilions were demolished or moved<br />

after the fair ended, several were saved and have<br />

become emblems of the city’s largest and most<br />

diverse borough.<br />

screenings of Modern Ruin: A World’s Fair<br />

Pavilion, a new documentary from Aquarela<br />

Pictures about the New York State Pavilion,<br />

accompanied by a Q&A with the film’s<br />

director Matthew Silva. Silva’s extraordinary<br />

film tells the story of the pavilion during the<br />

glory days of the fair, its history in the fifty<br />

years since, and recent advocacy efforts to<br />

reimagine it for today.<br />

THE ARCHITECTURE &<br />

DESIGN FILM FESTIVAL<br />

The Architecture & Design Film Festival,<br />

(ADFF), is the nation’s largest film festival<br />

of its kind, presenting a curated selection<br />

of films, events, and panel discussions to<br />

entertain, engage, and educate people about<br />

architecture and design. From October<br />

13-18, the festival will host more then thirty<br />

films from around the world, showcasing<br />

and celebrating some of the most exciting<br />

projects old and new.<br />

This commercial kitchen incubator<br />

hosts over 250 artisan food makers<br />

who make all sorts of delicious<br />

items, from breads and cakes to<br />

sauces and jams. Visit the space<br />

during <strong>OHNY</strong> Weekend to talk to<br />

a select group of these artisans,<br />

and take the opportunity to peruse<br />

and even purchase some locally<br />

made food. If you are a foodie—or<br />

aspire to be a food maker—visit the<br />

Entrepreneur Space to learn about<br />

one of the city’s most exciting<br />

centers of edible creativity.<br />

Brooklyn Grange<br />

Brooklyn Grange operates two<br />

of the world’s largest rooftop soil<br />

farms, including this site atop<br />

the historic Standard Motors<br />

Products Building in Long Island<br />

five boroughs, this site grows<br />

over 50,000 lbs of organicallycultivated<br />

produce per year.<br />

Julian Freirich came to America<br />

from Germany nearly a century<br />

ago and in 1921 opened a meat<br />

processing company in Long Island<br />

City. He became famous for selling<br />

fine meats, especially “Porkette”<br />

products. The building that was<br />

home to his business for decades<br />

is now home to the Long Island<br />

City Community Boathouse, which<br />

shares it with a carpenter, the<br />

Rockaway Brewery, and Recycle-a-<br />

Bicycle. During <strong>OHNY</strong> Weekened,<br />

the all-volunteer LICCB welcomes<br />

you to kayak on the East River<br />

(weather permitting).<br />

Celebrating the glamorous early<br />

days of transatlantic air travel,<br />

the main room of the Marine Air<br />

Terminal was a spectacular<br />

introduction to the adventure<br />

of flying and remains one of the<br />

city’s most distinctive Art Deco<br />

interiors. The defining feature<br />

of this striking circular space is<br />

“Flight,” a vividly colored mural<br />

by James Brooks depicting the<br />

history of flight and man’s quest<br />

to conquer the skies. Today, it is<br />

the only active airport terminal<br />

in the country dating to the first<br />

generation of air travel.<br />

The Onderdonk House—actually<br />

two connected houses from 1709<br />

and the mid 1800s—serves as a<br />

museum for the permanent exhibit<br />

on the archaeology of the site; for<br />

changing exhibits on local history<br />

and culture; and the preservation of<br />

Arbitration Rock, the historic marker<br />

that was part of the survey in 1789<br />

that separated Queens and Brooklyn,<br />

and was rediscovered and moved to<br />

the Onderdonk Site in 2001. During<br />

<strong>OHNY</strong> Weekend, the house will<br />

offer Colonial Crafts for children in<br />

addition to public tours. 1709.<br />

One of New York City’s signature<br />

spaces, the Great Hall is NYSCI’s<br />

original exhibition gallery,<br />

constructed for the 1964-65<br />

World’s Fair. Designed by Wallace<br />

K. Harrison, the Hall has undulating<br />

walls that rise 100 ft with no<br />

corners or straight segments. More<br />

than 5,000 2 x 3-ft-cobalt-blue<br />

panels make up the otherworldly<br />

facade. Visit to learn about the<br />

recently completed restoration.<br />

NYSCI’s 450 exhibits, and<br />

participatory activities will also be<br />

available for free for those who<br />

mention <strong>OHNY</strong> Weekend at the<br />

In the 1930s, nearly 900 acres of<br />

central Queens was transformed<br />

into a vast showplace of innovation<br />

and creativity for the 1939-<br />

40 World’s Fair. The site was<br />

reimagined a generation later for<br />

the 1964-65 World’s Fair, after<br />

which it became Flushing Meadows<br />

Corona Park, the flagship city park<br />

of Queens and one of the largest<br />

green spaces in the five boroughs.<br />

Take a walking tour of this vibrant<br />

public space to learn about the<br />

remaining landmarks from the<br />

World’s Fairs, and the incredible<br />

history of one of New York’s most<br />

important cultural events.<br />
