A Note from the Chair 

On behalf of my Committee I am very pleased to welcome you to the 949th Anniversary of 

the 'The Battle of Hastings'. Throughout the year the Hastings Week Committee, with the help 

of Hastings Borough Council and a range of volunteers works towards providing a week-long 

variety of events and activities for everyone to enjoy. These events are not only entertaining 

and educational, but also provide a great opportunity for families to spend quality time 

together! I know you will all enjoy the favourites, the Classic Car Show, concerts, jazz, 

Hobbies & Crafts culminating with the torchlight procession and fireworks masterminded by 

the Hastings Borough Bonfire Society and I would like to personally thank everyone who has 

contributed to the production of the Hastings Week programme 2015 and everyone who is 

participating and I hope you all will join 

in the fun and spend an exciting October 

with us!

Mayor’s introduction 

In the year of the 949th Anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, we 

have a large number of events going on throughout Hastings 

Week again this year. There’s so much to choose from, with 

something fascinating and fun to do every day of the week. 

I know that a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes, 

all year long, putting together this interesting and exciting 

programme for this year, ranging from guided walks, the 

vintage car and commercial vehicle show, open days 

around the town, and bonfire night with one of the best 

firework displays in Britain to name only a few. 

I hope that you will all have a really great time and get 

as much enjoyment from the week as I know I will 

.

11am 'In the Footsteps of the Conquerer': 

Join our volunteer guides for a walk around the 

Stade, Hastings’ ancient fishing beach area, to 

explore the history of our unique sustainable 

fishing community. 

Walks take about 90 minutes and are FREE but 

please donate to The Fishermen’s Museum, 

part of the OHPS. 

Walks are on level but maybe uneven ground, 

no steps. Suitable footwear advisable. Meet at 

the Lifeboat Station (blue building on the 

beach) 

2.30 pm join us for a tour of Hastings Old Town, 

the premier ancient Cinque Port, with its wealth 

of historic buildings, twittens and cat-creeps. 

Find out why the celebrities of their day flocked 

to Hastings. OHPS volunteer guides lead all 

walks, which take about 90 minutes and 

proceed gently downhill, but there are stairs. 

The walks are FREE, but please donate to the 

OHPS (Old Hastings Preservation Society).

Sprat & Winkle Run (Vintage Commercial Vehicles) 

11.00 am (approx) 

This will be the 7th year that the Sprat 

and Winkle Run for commercial 

vehicles has been running from 

Sevenoaks down to Hastings to bring 

the Hastings Week celebrations to a 

close. The run started as an idea by 

the London & South East Area of the 

Commercial Vehicle Society who were 

looking for a seaside destination for 

one of their old commercial vehicle 

runs. 

The Historic Commercial Vehicle 

Society was founded in 1958 by a 

group of enthusiasts who between 

them owned less than a dozen 

preserved commercial vehicles . 

Today the Society has nearly 2000 

members who own 4,500 vehicles, 

such has been the growth of interest 

in the preservation of commercial 

road vehicles. Probably the best 

known of our activities is the annual 

London to Brighton run held on the first 

sunday in May. Further information can

The Sprat & Winkle Run attracts 

around 70 different commercials 

including buses and coaches, and now 

is a permanent fixture on the 

preservation scene, so please come 

along to the Stade to have a good look 

at the vehicles and feel free to chat to 

the owners and drivers who have come 

down to Hastings, we look forward to 

meeting you. 

The event is named The Sprat And 

Winkle Run because the finish is at The 

Stade, Winkle Island, so we send a 

load of Sprats to catch the Winkle!!

The Bowskill Trophy 

Presented in memory of Cyril Bowskill who, 

with his wife Joan, was a great supporter of 

Hastings Week. From a majority vote based on 

public nominations, it is given to a person, 

group or organisation who has done most to 

promote the prestige of the week. Certificates 

of Merit are given to ‘Runners up’. Everyone 

works so hard for the success of Hastings 

Week, it is always difficult to choose but it is 

good, and very necessary to show 

appreciation.

Continuing local authority cutbacks have meant 

that the Hastings Week Programme is not 

produced or subsidised by Hastings Borough 

Council. The design and production of this 

booklet has been donated by Hastings Week 

volunteer Ion Castro who, since 2002, has also 

donated and maintained the website 

www.1066.net/hastings-week. We would like to

there would have been no funds to pay for the

Why Hastings Week? 

14th October (now Hastings Day) was the 

date in 1066 when King Harold lost the Battle 

of Hastings. William Duke of Normandy, who 

was using Hastings as his base, then claimed 

the crown and changed the way England was 

governed forever. He also gave us the English 

language. In 1966 the 900th anniversary of the 

Battle was celebrated and it was such a 

success that Hastings Borough Council 

decided to mark the date every year as 

Hastings Day. For a time it was just a day of 

activities but it has grown over the years to 

become a week-long celebration of art, 

music, walks, sport, events, and exhibitions. 

The Hastings Week programme of events is 

put together by a band of volunteers on the 

Hastings Week Committee who give up their 

time freely; and we thank them for their 

continued support and enthusiasm.
