Ten things to know about
Open House Chicago
1. Open House Chicago (OHC) is a FREE public festival
that offers behind-the-scenes access to 200 buildings across
Chicago—no tickets are required.
About the Chicago
Architecture Foundation
Five years ago, the Chicago
Architecture Foundation (CAF)
decided to bring a city-wide festival of
architecture and design to Chicago—
the quintessential city of American
architecture. London originated the
“Open House” concept more than 20
years ago, New York City had several
years under its belt and even Toronto
produced a similar festival. By 2011, it
was Chicago’s time and Open House
Chicago was born.
CAF was founded in 1966. As a
nonprofit organization dedicated
to inspiring people to discover why
designed matters, CAF has grown
over the years to become a hub for
learning about and participating in
architecture and design. If you visit us
at 224 S. Michigan Avenue, you’ll find
a flurry of activity: visitors preparing
to embark on a tour, workshops for
students, lectures for adults and
field trip groups gathered around
our 1,000-building scale model of
Chicago.
In addition to Open House Chicago,
CAF is best known for our 85 different
Chicago-area tours, including the topranked
tour in the city: the Chicago
Architecture Foundation River Cruise
aboard Chicago’s First Lady Cruises.
Our 450 highly-trained volunteer
docents lead more than 6,000 walking,
boat, bus and L train tours each year.
CAF also offers exhibitions, public
programs and education activities
for all ages.
CAF PRESIDENT
& CEO
RAHM EMANUEL,
MAYOR
OF CHICAGO
“Chicago is a city that is passionate about architecture
and this fall, Chicago is celebrating architecture all
around. From the opening of the very first Chicago
Architecture Biennial to the fifth-annual Open House
Chicago, Chicago’s appreciation of architecture
and design has never been stronger. This year,
CAF has expanded OHC to include more than 200
sites and 20 neighborhoods and our first suburban
partner, Evanston. So get out there and explore this
extraordinary city of architecture.”
“On October 3, Chicago launched its first Architecture
Biennial, fortifying our position as the city of
revolutionary architecture and design. It’s no wonder
that the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s Open
House Chicago, now in its fifth year, has become
a marquee event for the city. I encourage you to
explore a new building—and a new neighborhood—
to experience why we should all be proud to call
Chicago home.”
