Business
Can Lidl and Aldi keep expanding? Will ‘Apple
watch’ be successful? Will Coca Cola continue to
sponsor FIFA? Such questions will be addressed on
this topical and engaging course.
You will investigate different types and sizes of
organisations in various business sectors in local,
national and global contexts. You will also learn
how to analyse and interpret financial indicators, as
well as calculate, use and understand a variety of
accounting ratios.
This qualification provides a solid foundation for
a wide range of higher education courses such as
business management, accountancy, marketing or
international business. Students can also progress to
a wide range of careers ranging from banking, sales,
product management and general management to
working in public sector organisations or charities.
The course assumes no previous knowledge of
business.
Chemistry
What is paracetamol? Can we stop global warming?
How will cars be powered in ten years’ time?
Studying chemistry is not only stimulating in
itself but also has many practical applications.
Advancements in medicine, agrochemicals,
explosives, paints, materials, fuels and energy rely
on our understanding of chemical processes.
The course develops a deeper understanding of
chemistry by exploring chemical concepts and
applying them in the context of the modern
world. This is achieved through the combination
of collaborative learning and a wide range of
laboratory experiments and enquiry. The course
looks into the chemical origins of the Universe,
understanding fuels and how they work,
manufacturing polymers, studying the Earth’s
atmosphere, analysing substances, and the design
and structure of medicines.
Experimental laboratory work is an essential and
assessed part of the course. It develops
new skills and techniques, often utilising advanced
apparatus.
PROFILE
Simon Jones
Studied A Levels in Maths,
Physics, and Design Technology
and AS Level History
Simon left Bay House to
study Engineering Science
at Oxford University. Upon
graduating, he joined Rolls-
Royce as a Mechanical
Engineering graduate where
he spent a very happy 18
months on the graduate
scheme, working in some very interesting and
diverse areas, ranging from nuclear submarine
propulsion to tidal energy generation to high
precision manufacturing.
He is now based in the Filton office at Bristol, where
he is a design lead working on the next generation of
high-temperature turbine components for aerospace
turbofan engines.
His best Bay House memory?
I look back at my years at Bay House as some of the best
of my life. Certainly spending lunchtimes at the beach
with friends was great, as was the multi-coloured common
room of old. I genuinely couldn’t have got where I am
today without the support and help of all the staff at Bay
House, it was much appreciated.
Classical Civilisation
From the films Gladiator to Clash of the Titans, not to
mention 300, the ancient world is never far from
our screens. Our public buildings and statues also
echo ancient Greece and Rome. So why are we still
so fascinated by the ancient world? Why does it
continue to have such an impact? This course will
help you to answer these questions. It will begin
to satisfy your curiosity about why the Greeks and
Romans are such an important part of our culture
today.
Students will be introduced to various aspects of
the classical period and develop an understanding
of their relevance to modern society. Topics covered
include Greek sculpture and architecture, the
Athenian Empire and the lives and politics of the
early Roman emperors.
Students are required to use a variety of primary
sources, including literature and inscriptions,
museum exhibits and works of art. No prior
knowledge of the subject, or proficiency in Greek
or Latin, is required – just an enthusiasm for the
ancient world.
