you will be disqualified from holding<br />

a driver’s licence for three years from<br />

the date of the conviction<br />

• two or more prior offences in the last<br />

10 years, you will be disqualified from<br />

holding a driver’s licence for five years<br />

from the date of the conviction.<br />

• if a death or injury occurs as a result<br />

of an impaired offence, the minimum<br />

licence suspension is five years even<br />

for a first offender.<br />

ALBERTA ADMINISTRATIVE LICENCE<br />

SUSPENSION (AALS) PROGRAM:<br />

The Alberta Administrative Licence<br />

Suspension (AALS) Program deals with<br />

alcohol, drug-related impaired driving<br />

offences and refusal to provide breath<br />

or blood samples. This includes illegal<br />

drugs as well as legal drugs such as<br />

prescription medication with side effects<br />

that may cause the driver to be impaired.<br />

ADMINISTRATIVE LICENCE<br />

SUSPENSIONS:<br />

An Administrative Licence Suspension will<br />

be issued to a driver charged under the<br />

Criminal Code for:<br />

• Blood alcohol content greater than .08<br />

• Ability to operate a motor vehicle<br />

is impaired by alcohol, drugs or a<br />

combination<br />

• Refusal to comply with a lawful<br />

demand of a peace officer (e.g.,<br />

for a breath sample)<br />

Drivers charged with an alcohol or<br />

drug related impaired driving offence will<br />

face an immediate licence suspension,<br />

which remains in place until the criminal<br />

charge is resolved.<br />

Alberta has progressive administrative<br />

sanctions for impaired driving convictions:<br />

1st Criminal Code Charge within<br />

10 years:<br />

Sustained licence suspension until<br />

your criminal charges have been<br />

dealt with by the courts<br />

··<br />

Towing and impound charges<br />

··<br />

3 day vehicle seizure<br />

··<br />

If convicted of the criminal code<br />

offence, the driver is suspended<br />

for one year and must participate<br />

in the mandatory Ignition Interlock<br />

Program for one year<br />

··<br />

If convicted, the driver must<br />

complete a “Planning Ahead”<br />

impaired driving course<br />

2nd Criminal Code Charge within<br />

10 years:<br />

Sustained licence suspension until<br />

your criminal charges have been<br />

dealt with by the courts<br />

Towing and impound charges<br />

··<br />

7 day vehicle seizure<br />

··<br />

If convicted of the criminal code<br />
