Youth given vital<br />

advice by QCF experts<br />

on future careers<br />

CAREER CAMP<br />

Participants were given the opportunity to present their projects<br />

to experts in attendance during CMU-Q’s program.<br />

Qatari high school students took part in the third<br />

annual Summer Career Camp of Qatar Career Fair<br />

(QCF), a member of Qatar <strong>Foundation</strong>, which ran<br />

from 23 August 2015 for two weeks.<br />

During the event students took part in a series of<br />

activities designed to equip them with the necessary<br />

skills to plan their future careers. Emphasis was<br />

placed on the importance of developing a valued role<br />

in the country’s labor force.<br />

Saad Al Kharji, Head of Operations, QCF, said:<br />

“Through this event, we strive to reinforce students’<br />

self-confidence by guiding them towards making<br />

smart decisions and choices that reflect positively on<br />

their academic and professional path, as well as<br />

introducing them to the Qatari labor market, its<br />

growth sectors, and the various recruitment needs of<br />

the state.”<br />

At the event’s launch, different speakers addressed<br />

the labor market’s need for talented Qatari<br />

professionals, and the importance of meeting<br />

recognized industry standards.<br />

CMU-Q summer program<br />

targets potential intake<br />

OUTREACH<br />

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), a<br />

partner university of Qatar <strong>Foundation</strong>, expects 10<br />

percent of the high school students who took part in its<br />

ninth Summer College Preview Program (SCPP) to<br />

enroll at the institution.<br />

<strong>The</strong> month-long university preparatory course saw<br />

the largest intake of its history with 76 participants, 58<br />

percent of whom were Qatari; embarking on the<br />

program. Designed to academically strengthen<br />

students’ knowledge in readiness for university, the<br />

course included classes in Math, English, and exam<br />

preparation for college admission processes.<br />

During the SCPP, students were also provided with<br />

an opportunity to focus particularly on the majors<br />

taught by the university. Participants were able to<br />

initiate their own interactive practical projects on<br />

biological sciences, business administration, computer<br />

science, and information sciences, with guidance from<br />

staff and students, before eventually presenting their<br />

ideas at the event’s conclusion.<br />

<strong>The</strong> event provided a series of activities to help<br />

attendees plan their future careers.<br />

QFIS hosts<br />

lecture on use of<br />

crowdfunding as an<br />

entrepreneurship tool<br />

<strong>The</strong> Center for Islamic Economics and<br />

Finance at Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies<br />

(QFIS), a college of Hamad bin Khalifa<br />

University (HBKU), a member of Qatar<br />

<strong>Foundation</strong>, held a public lecture titled<br />

‘Entrepreneurship, Crowdfunding, and<br />

Islamic Finance’ on 9 September 2015.<br />

Delivered by Dr Shehab Marzban,<br />

Assistant Professor in Islamic Finance,<br />

QFIS, and Co-founder of ‘Shekra<br />

Crowdfunding’, the lecture drew a<br />

distinction between the work of<br />

conventional and Islamic banks. It offered<br />

ideas for mobilizing capital and promoting<br />

start-up, small, and medium-sized<br />

enterprises, through the use of innovative<br />

and desired asset-based and equity-based<br />

financial products, which are typically<br />

Shari’a-compliant.<br />

"For Islamic finance to be financially<br />

inclusive, entrepreneurship with<br />

crowdfunding can potentially be a useful<br />

tool at its disposal,” Dr Syed Nazim Ali,<br />

Director, Center for Islamic Economics and<br />

Finance said of the lecture.<br />

QatarDebate supports school team<br />

at debating world championship<br />

DEBATE<br />

<strong>The</strong> interns of the project participated<br />

in several research activities related to<br />

the Qatar Genome Project.<br />

Team Qatar was comprised of Ali Al Ansari, Ali Al Mawlawi, Ameena<br />

Al Meer, Buthayna Al Mulla, and Tareq Al Hammadi.<br />

'Team Qatar', supported by QatarDebate, a member of Qatar <strong>Foundation</strong>, took part in the<br />

recently held 2015 World Schools Debating Championship. <strong>The</strong> purpose of the<br />

championship is to encourage debating among high school students throughout the<br />

world and to promote international understanding.<br />

<strong>The</strong> tournament, for pre-tertiary debaters aged 14-19 years, was held in Singapore and<br />

brought together the world’s finest school debaters in challenging discussions.<br />

Team Qatar was selected from among the country’s most experienced and eloquent<br />

young speakers in an intense screening process orchestrated by QatarDebate, with<br />

preliminary application early in 2015. <strong>The</strong> team members, Ali Al Ansari, Ali Al Mawlawi,<br />

Ameena Al Meer, Buthayna Al Mulla, and Tareq Al Hammadi were coached and trained<br />

during regular debates and interviews in preparation for the championship.<br />

<strong>The</strong> team was accompanied by coach Tasneem Elias and QatarDebate representative<br />

and judge Alex de Jager.<br />

Qatar Biobank concludes<br />

Genome Project Summer<br />

Internship<br />

Qatar Biobank, a member of Qatar <strong>Foundation</strong>, recently concluded its month-long<br />

summer internship on the ‘Qatar Genome Project’, which was attended by five<br />

interns who are students and graduates of Qatar University and Weill Cornell<br />

Medical College in New York City.<br />

<strong>The</strong> summer internship, the first of its kind, created an opportunity for the interns<br />

to work on the pioneer Qatar Genome Project, which seeks to assist in creating a<br />

roadmap for the study of genetics and its functions, in which Qatar Biobank<br />

contributes as a member of Qatar’s National Genome Committee.<br />

During the internship period, the interns had the opportunity to participate in<br />

research based on the Qatari society’s perception and understanding of the project.<br />

“Through the Qatar Genome Project, Qatar Biobank works to create a roadmap<br />

for the future of treatment through personalized medicine,” said Dr Nahla Afifi,<br />

Scientific and Education Director, Qatar Biobank.<br />

“We organized this internship program to provide an opportunity for students<br />

and graduates to be a part of the future by working on the Qatar Genome Project.”<br />
