THE DAILY COLLEGIAN
LOCAL
5 day event planned
to preview TEDxPSU
By KatieDeFiore
FOR THE COLLEGIAN
Students and faculty involved
with TEDxPSU are preparing
to showcase innovation at Penn
State with their weeklong preview
event.
“TEDx marks an independently
run TED event,” TEDxPSU Director
of Public Relations Erica Avallone
said via email. “At a TEDx
event, TED Talk videos and live
speakers combine to spark deep
discussion and connection in a
small group.”
Avallone said TEDxPSU will
kick off on Monday in the HUB-
Robeson Center with music, special
guests and free laptop stickers
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sam Richards, a sociology professor
at Penn State, said one of
the goals of this week is to have
students and faculty see what it’s
like to present their ideas and research
in a TED Talk, and hopefully
they will want to try out to be a
speaker for 2016. The whole week
is set up in anticipation of TEDx-
PSU 2016, he said.
“It’s trying to get everybody
excited and inspired to do cool
things,” Tim Simpson, professor
of mechanical, nuclear and industrial
engineering, said.
Simpson said he will be speaking
at the Sci-5 Salon event on Tuesday.
Avallone said the event will showcase
projects and research across
five different branches of science.
Simpson said he will be discussing
the possibilities of 3-D printing
in his talk.
“We’ve got the new Maker Commons
in the Penn State library
that is opening soon that will give
everybody at Penn State access to
3-D printing, so my goal is to get
everybody excited about that,”
Simpson said.
Wayne Curtis, professor of
chemical engineering, will also
be speaking at Tuesday’s event.
Because his research deals with
cloning, Curtis said he will be providing
explanation as to what it really
means to clone. However, he
said he also plans to emphasize in
his talk the idea to find something
that interests you and turn it into
a career.
“It’s all about thinking about
education in something different
than the classroom,” Curtis said.
Other faculty members that will
be speaking at Tuesday’s event include
chemistry professor Sheryl
Dykstra, engineering design professor
David St. John and Director
of the Penn State Lunar Lion
Team Michael Paul.
Tickets for this event have been
sold out.
On Wednesday, there will be
an Eco-Car Showcase outside of
the HUB. “Cars will include a
McLaren, Bently, Porsche, Audi,
BMW, Corvette, GTR and the
PSU EcoCAR,” Avallone said.
“Partnered with NY Auto Depot
and PSU EcoCAR, TEDxPSU is
bringing the most innovative cars
to State College.”
On Thursday, the significance
of TED Talks within the Penn
State community will be discussed.
Richards, who has given two
TED Talks before, will be speaking
about his experiences.
One of his talks, entitled “A
Radical Experiment in Empathy,”
has over 1.3 million views
online, so Richards will be discussing
how giving such a successful
talk has impacted his career.
“I think it’s a good opportunity
for people to be involved in something
that has local, national and
international reach,” Richards
said.
Avallone said all of the events
are leading up to the big theme
and logo reveal for TEDxPSU
2016 on Friday.
“I hope the most anticipated
event is the theme reveal. Our
design team has been working
on it incredibly hard,” Avallone
said. “The theme is amazing and
is really going to make this year’s
conference stand out.”
Super Fair attendance doubles
By Tyler Arnold
THE DAILY COLLEGIAN
One thousand people attended
this year’s Centre County Super
Fair Saturday morning at Mount
Nittany Middle School, doubling
last year’s total of 500 people.
The fair showcased more than
100 services and explained what
they offer to Centre County and
how people can volunteer to help
the community.
There were 110 vendors, which
was the full capacity of what the
school could hold, Sandy Schuckers,
who is on the Super Fair planning
committee, said.
Vendors set up tables in the
gymnasium, the cafeteria and in
the hallway between the two. In
the auditorium, they held informational
seminars and shows for kids
to watch.
Thanks to sponsors, Schuckers
said, they were able to make it free
for individuals and the vendors to
attend the fair.
They also handed out booklets
that contained information about
the fair and information regarding
all of the vendors that attended.
Jean Kagarise said she found
useful information on volunteer opportunities
she had been looking
for. She said she had known about
the opportunities beforehand, but
did not know who to contact.
Gary Kagarise said he found
useful information on home care
and what can be offered to veterans
in Centre County.
Some tables had raffles, door
prizes, giveaways and events for
kids. There was something there
for all ages, Schuckers said.
Matt Mullis (senior–secondary
education) ran a table with his
Penn State club, Superheroes
for Kids. The club allowed kids to
make superhero masks and had
activities for them to do.
Maya Shenoy (sophomore–
neuroscience) said the group
goes around to community events
and tries to help kids have fun.
There was an informational
presentation on Medicare and
wills, power of attorney and
trusts, as well as one on weatherization,
Schuckers said.
There was also a puppet show
and a magician for kids, she said.
The Downtown Rotary Club
provided the food for purchase at
the event. Schuckers said it was
good to have them provide the food
because their money also gets
funneled back into the community.
PSU Latino Caucus hosted a food fundraiser by serving home-cooked
latino dishes on Saturday, Nov. 14.
Latino Caucus
cooks for cause
By Kelly Chartrand
FOR THE COLLEGIAN
Walking into the first floor of
the GN Centre at 142 S. Allen St.,
the smell of Latino cuisine filled
the air. Following the signs up
to the third floor of the building,
the Penn State Latino Caucus’s
“Comida Casera” fundraiser
was off to a crowd-pleasing start
with the words “good food, good
friends and good times” hanging
above the buffet.
“Comida Casera” — which
translates to “homemade food”
in English — consisted of a variety
of traditional Latino meals
from countries around the world,
as well as Latino music.
“Comida Casera’s” goal was
to raise money for the Latino
Caucus’s “Nosotros Somos… Familia!”
event to be held on Jan.
15, 2016. “Nosotros Somos… Familia!”
meaning “We are… Family!”
in Spanish, will be a large
cultural celebration consisting of
traditional Latino music, dance,
food and history.
“Nosotros Somos… Familia!”
co-chairs Stacy Tirado and Hazel
Piña helped run the “Comida
Casera” event. Tirado said she
hopes the show fundraiser displayed
how hard the Latino Caucus
is working to make “Nosotros
Somos… Familia!” a prominent
event.
More than 18 hours were spent
preparing and cooking the food
served, Tirado (senior-animal
sciences) said.
For $7, attendees could choose
one of each type of food from the
large array of dishes. Guests
had the options of beef or cheese
empanadas, white rice or rice
mixed with red beans, roasted
pork or baked chicken and ceviche
— fish cured with lemon and lime
juice — or vianda, cod with onions,
cassava and potatoes. Three
dessert options, brownies, flan or
tres leches, were also available to
choose from.
“We are serving all traditional
foods,” Tirado said. “We all made
meals that we know how to make
from home, which ties this event
into the whole family aspect of
[“Nosotros Somos… Familia!”].
These are recipes that our families
have taught us, and now we
want to pass them on to the people
that attend Penn State.”
The food served was not only
traditional, but it also had ties
to the upcoming holiday season.
The meals were signature Latino
Thanksgiving and Christmas
foods, Piña (senior-human development
and family studies) said.
“The food we [served] here is
like the turkey of Thanksgiving,”
Tirado said. “We go home next
week for Thanksgiving, so we
wanted to show what [Latino families]
commonly do. We all come
together with our families and we
have a social, we dance, we play
games, we cook food and then we
sit down and enjoy what we made
all together. It’s a bonding thing.”
