MOSHITO MUSIC CONFERENCE SHEDS
SOME LIGHT ON THE MUSIC BUSINESS
The 12th annual Moshito Music Conference focused
on how to have a sustainable career as a musician
Musicians and record companies
executives gathered at the SABC Radio Park on the
10th & 11th of September 2015 for the 12th annual
Moshito Music Conference & Exhibition. The old and
new generation of South African music fraternity came
together to trade knowledge about the ever evolving
music industry.
There were various topics on the agenda including
radio airplay, TV airplay, building the artists’ brand,
royalties just to name a few. Industry players from
various media like print, radio, online and television
were invited to be facilitators and panel members on
different subjects. Some of the names that were in
attendance sharing a few words and knowledge with
the audience includes veteran music producer Sello
Chicco Twala, SABC’s Chief Operating Officer Hlaudi
Motsoeneng, Bubblegum music queen Mercy Phakela ,
Gospel musicians Sfiso Ncwane and Lundi Tyamara.
The audience got to be educated about how
musicians are supposed to be compensated when
their songs are played on radio, sold on digital
platforms, used in adverts, film or streamed on
interactive services. The huge concern was the
small percentage of local artists being played on
South African radio stations which are dominated by
international national artists.
