Rotary Club Seeks 2015
Business Person of Year
The Rotary Club of Pacific Palisades
is seeking nominations for Business
Person of the Year. The person must
hold a senior-level management position
in his/her company; must live or work in
Pacific Palisades; and a must have demonstrated
leadership within the Palisades, the
nominee’s own industry, and exhibited a
character of “Service Above Self.” (Members
of the Rotary Club are ineligible.)
The winner will receive a $500 donation
to the charity of their choice and a one-year
honorary membership to the Rotary Club
Arnie Wishnick and Jackie Maduff.
Trying to keep his wedding low-profile
was not easy for Arnie Wishnick,
longtime executive director of the
Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce.
“We ran off and got married. Well, we
didn’t exactly run off . . . we briskly walked
off and exchanged vows,” he said.
Arnie and his bride, Jackie Maduff, have
known each other for 50 years. Jackie and
Arnie’s first wife, Cathie, met at UCLA in
1965. When Cathie and Arnie married in
1968, Jackie was in the wedding party.
Arnie was married to Cathie for 40 years
until she succumbed to her devastating illness.
Meanwhile, Jackie was married to a fellow
named Bernie Maduff, not to be confused
with the infamous Bernie Madoff. Arnie
actually introduced Jackie to Bernie. Jackie

of Pacific Palisades. Additionally, he or she
will be honored at a Rotary breakfast on
January 14 and at the Chamber of Commerce
Installation Dinner TBD.

Wishnick and Maduff Wed
and Bernie’s marriage ended in divorce, but
it wasn’t a complete loss. Jackie has a wonderful
daughter, Wendy, a food safety officer
for Subway. She lives with her husband
Daniel and daughter Bella in Omaha.
Jackie and Arnie exchanged their nuptials
in the presence of Rabbi Amy Bernstein
and Cantor Chayim Frenkel of Kehillat
Israel on Tuesday morning, October 20.
“In Jewish tradition, Tuesday is a lucky day
to get married,” said Arnie, who proposed
on Valentine’s Day 2014.
He must have realized that marriage is
important. He gave up an Optimist Club
meeting on a Tuesday morning to wed.
It’s hard to keep a secret in Pacific Pali -
sades, especially when this newspaper story
is distributed to the entire town.

A Chamber Networking Breakfast was
held on November 5 at Gladstone’s Restaurant
with 52 people in attendance. Rick
Lemmo, Michael Gazzano and Ryan Hawley
from Caruso Affiliated shared plans for
its proposed Palisades Village project.
Lemmo said that when Rick Caruso originally
bought the property on Swarthmore
and Sunset, the plan was to “refresh the
fronts of the buildings and then rent them.
The community wanted no part of it. They
wanted a movie theater and different stores.”
Gazzano explained to business owners
that Caruso is building less than half the
square footage of what is allowed and that
a study shows there will be no net increase
in traffic because the Mobil station will be
removed. Asked whether a stoplight would
be needed at Bashford and Monument,
Gazzano said: “All of the intersections were
studied and we’re not close to tripping a
need for a signal.”
New Chamber of Commerce members
were introduced. They are Paul Bowinkel
(who owns commercial property on
Swarth more and Sunset), Nancy Drobnis
(The L.A. Organizer) and Buzz Park (Light -
year Marketing Group, which offers website
development).
BID Update: The Palisades Business Improvement
District, which was ratified by
the L.A. City Council on June 23, has
elected a board of directors. It includes Rick
Pacific Palisades, Brentwood,
Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Venice

The BID has been pursued since 2011 by
a committee of residents, business owners
and property owners as a way to ensure effective
maintenance programs in the Pali -
sades business district.
At the November meeting, assessments
on current property tax bills, selecting a
BID logo and colors and the e-mail address
(laurie@palisadesbid.org or Elliot@pali -
sadesbid.org) were discussed. A December
meeting will be held, date to be determined.
Caruso Affiliated: Michael Gazzano was
at the Swarthmore Farmers Market on Sunday
to answer questions about the Caruso
Affiliated Village project. He said that either
he or a representative will be there every
Sunday starting at 10 a.m. to answer questions
for the next few months.
Chamber Mixer: The next Pacific Pali -
sades Chamber of Commerce mixer will be
held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday,
December 2, at Studio K, 15207 Sunset Blvd.
It will be hosted by Studio K owner Susan
Howard.
