Brighton Calendar Curator Finn Hopson It’s that time of year again and for many in Brighton, high on the lists of stocking fillers to buy is the Brighton Calendar - a showcase for some of the great photography created in the city over the last year. In our final column of 2015, Miniclick spoke to the calendar’s curator, Finn Hopson… Tell us a bit about the history of this calendar? The calendar was started by Nigel Swallow in 1999. He did a small print run of a calendar with his own photographs and sold it from a fly pitch by the West Pier at Christmas. No one was doing anything like that in Brighton at the time and it was a huge hit. Each year it grew and grew in popularity. He started selling from a stall outside Snoopers Paradise where he eventually opened the much loved North Laine Photography Gallery, the home of the calendar for seven years until 2011. During that time it gained a reputation for capturing the essence of life in Brighton & Hove, featuring the work of a huge number of local photographers. When the gallery closed in 2011 there was some doubt that the calendar would continue, but its huge popularity made it very hard to stop. In May 2014 I had the opportunity to open a new gallery on the beach, and having worked with Nigel on the calendar for the last few years it seemed like the right time for him to pass on the job of curating it to me - I hope to be able to keep it going for many years to come. How did you go about curating the selection of images? The images are collected throughout the year. I get loads of submissions emailed in and keep a close eye on the Brighton Flickr group and social media, as well as taking the occasional photograph myself. From summer onwards I start to assemble these into little collections and layouts, getting feedback from friends, photographers and people who visit the gallery. The tricky part is to try and find the right balance of interesting, fun photos that really capture something that feels recognisably ‘Brighton’ to anyone who knows the place. Of course there are photos of familiar places in there but the calendar is really about what a fun place this is to live and a reflection of the weird and wonderful things we all get up to. What do you think makes Brighton such a popular place for photographers? You can take a walk though Brighton at any time of the day or night and you will find something interesting going on. It’s a fabulous, diverse, and endlessly surprising city to live in and I think that’s a huge inspiration to photographers, no matter what kind of subject they’re interested in. Even the photographic clichés can inspire people to come up with new ways to photograph the same subject in an original way.
