Spiked Shieldbug<br />

Colour and pattern similar to Forest<br />

shieldbug but shoulder projection a sharp<br />

point. Scutellum yellow-tipped.<br />

Bronze Shieldbug<br />

Troilus luridus<br />

Brownish with metallic reflections, yellow<br />

banded antennae and blunt shoulder<br />

projections. Scutellum not tipped yellow.<br />

Heather Shieldbug<br />

Rhacognathus punctatus<br />

Dark with yellow-banded legs and pale<br />

central line on pronotum.<br />

Parent Shieldbug<br />

Elasmucha grisea<br />

Dark, red or brown never green. Chequered<br />

edge of abdomen.<br />

Hairy Shieldbug<br />

Dolycoris baccarum<br />

c 11mm, pinkish and hairy, black and white<br />

bands on edge of abdomen, legs and<br />

antennae.<br />

Blue Shieldbug<br />

Zicrona caerulea<br />

Unmistakeable as entirely metallic blue.<br />

Wetland species.<br />

Forget-me-not Bug<br />

Sehirus luctuosus<br />

Dull black with paler wing membrane.<br />

Buries itself head first into loose material at<br />

base of foodplant.<br />

Tortoise Bug<br />

Eurygaster testudinaria<br />

Broadly oval with domed back and enlarged<br />

scutellum. Ground colour sandy with<br />

variable brown or pinkish stripes.<br />

Dock Bug<br />

Coreus marginatus<br />

A large reddish brown bug. Abdomen oval<br />

broadly rounded beyond wings. Antennae<br />

long with last segment thicker.<br />

The Scarab Bug, Thyreocoris scarabaeoides,<br />

is a tiny beetle-like species, known from just<br />

a few dune sites in Wexford and Waterford.<br />

Last seen 2006 (No photograph).<br />
