Over A Century of Learning; Ever Widening Circles
It is in the journey of education—and through the
unfolding of God’s grace—that we experience the
making new of all things.
There were little girls, saying their prayers, accompanied by
teddy bears and baby dolls… and the Sisters. Then older
girls—young women—drawing constellations, analyzing
chemicals, observing organisms—all taught by the wise,
generous, and courageous Sisters. Now, young women and
men, under the tutelage of a richly talented and diverse
faculty, pondering the mysteries of science, utilizing the
latest in technology, and exploring the limitless resources of
this global age of information. These scholars are gathering
in circles, around a lab table, under lighted disc, or in
curved banquettes, discussing the latest political debate or
the recent Ted Talk… or, like their counterparts from
decades ago, what happened at lunch.
The Sisters of St. Joseph speak of ever-widening circles; it
is their charism of inclusive, expansive love… reflecting
God’s love. And so it is with their—and our—mission to
educate all persons, in all things, in all ways. We are ever
widening circles of learning, employing the latest
advances and reflecting the best practices. The means
and methods have changed, from typewriters to iPads,
from simple microscopes to complex robots, from
chalkboards to flat-screen televisions, from individual
memorization to collaborative participation, from finite
collections of books to infinite sources of knowledge.
And all the while so much has remained the same:
the caring, committed teacher; the dedicated, diligent
student; the thrill of new discoveries and the camaraderie
of fellow classmates; the bright, beautiful smiles of
young people; and the curious, sparkling, hopeful eyes
of scholars who dream of a new and better world.
