Chapter One
PREAMBLE
All awards made by St John’s College require
adherence to a system of credibility and
transparency so that the integrity of these
awards is ensured. It is vital, also, to follow a
rigorous process to allow for consistency of
awards over many generations in the College’s
history. To this end, the Honours and Awards
Committee is formally appointed and
constituted to carry out this important
function. The structure of the Committee and
the process of awards is detailed herein.
1. AUTHORITY AND DUE PROCESS
1.1. The Honours and Awards Committee of
St John’s College is authorised, in terms
of the St John’s Educational Trust
Constitution, clause 2.4, to decide upon
and grant awards and distinctions in the
areas and disciplines listed under
“Functions”, clause 3, below.
1.2. The following proposals, subject to any
amendments made by this Committee
and approved by the Trustees, must be
ratified at the beginning of each new
calendar year.
1.3. All new awards need to be approved by
the Board.

1.4. This Constitution, together with all
minutes shall be kept in a separate book
and made available to any member of
staff on request.
2. COMPOSITION OF THE
COMMITTEE
2.1. The Committee shall be composed of the
following members:
2.2. The Chairman: Deputy Headmaster,
Student and Faculty Affairs
2.3. The Secretary: appointed at the
beginning of the year from within the
Committee.
2.4. The Deputy Headmasters.
2.5. The four House Masters and the Sports
Administrator.
2.6. Any member of staff who in the opinion
of the Committee, could make a
significant contribution to the
committee’s discussions, and who may
be co-opted, with full voting powers, for
any period deemed necessary by the
Committee. Such members could include
1st team coaches not included in the
categories above.
2.7. All recommendations for awards made
by the Committee are to be approved by
the Headmaster.
3. FUNCTIONS OF THE COMMITTEE

3.1. The functions of the Honours and
Awards Committee shall include:

4. QUORUM
A quorum shall consist of two thirds of all
eligible members, or the nearest number to the
full Committee.
5. VOTING
5.1. All members present shall have one vote.
5.2. Members not present may not vote by
proxy.
5.3. Members not present may not appoint
deputies to vote in their place.
5.4. Decisions shall be made on a simple
majority vote.
5.5. Constitutional amendments must have
the approval of 75% of the eligible
members of the Committee.
6. MEETINGS
6.1. Meetings shall be held at least once per
term, or more frequently, if deemed
necessary.
6.2. Notice of meetings to appear in the
termly calendar or be sent to members
one week in advance by the Secretary.
7. RECORDS
7.1. The Secretary shall be responsible for:

7.1.1. Keeping minutes of all meetings in
a minute book.
7.1.2. Issuing copies of the minutes to all
members.
7.1.3. Recording all awards issued in the
Awards Book.
8. RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERS
Members shall be:
8.1. Objective in their judgements.
8.2. Become familiar with the teams and
clubs, and the pupils under consideration
by watching as many fixtures and
activities as possible (in particular home
fixtures.)
Chapter Two
Awards Criteria
For any student to achieve an award they must
ensure they have fulfilled the co-curricular

equirements set out by the College and be
seen to contribute fully to all aspects of the
College
9. TEAM AWARDS CONDITIONS:
In General, the candidate must have:
9.1. Reached U/17 age group and be in Form
4 and above.
9.2. Displayed a high standard of
sportsmanship and general behaviour.
9.3. Not brought the College into disrepute,
whether participating in the activity or
not.
9.4. Participated continually in the activity
subsequent to the award.
9.5. Shown a high level of dedication to the
team or club.
9.6. Displayed loyalty and dedication to the
College.
With regard to Sport, the Candidate must have:
9.7. Recognition of regular representation of
the College First Team:
9.8. Played and/or attended 70% of matches
and practices during season or year.
9.9. If injured, ill, or unavoidably absent,
played or attended 40% - 70% of

matches and practices during the season
or year.
With regard to Cultural Activities, Societies and
Clubs, the Candidate must have:
9.10. Met the requirements stipulated in 9.1. –
9.6.
9.11. Participated actively, including interschool
participated, in the activity
nominated.
9.12. Attended 70% of fixtures, meetings and
practices during season or year.
9.13. If injured, ill, or unavoidably absent,
played or attended 40% - 70% of
matches and practices during the season
or year.
Academic Team Awards have been
discontinued.
10. HALF COLOURS CONDITIONS:
In general, the Candidate must have:
10.1. Reached U/17 age group and be in form
4 and above.
10.2. Be eligible for, and have been awarded
Team Award, where applicable.

10.3. Satisfied all the conditions relevant to
receiving a Team Award, but with greater
emphasis on loyalty to the school and
team.
10.4. Achieved a similar award, or one equal in
standing, at another school.
With regard to sport, the Candidate must have:
10.5. Achieved Provincial representation in
trials at ‘A’ team level or equivalent
dependent on the nature of the sport.
10.6. Subject to 10.5 above, shown that they
are “outstanding” in the context of the
team, in relation to the strength of the
team and their comparison to other
schools and teams.
With regard to Cultural Activities, Societies or
Clubs, the Candidate must have:
10.7. Attained special recognition or received
special mention from an independent
source, .i.e. an external adjudicator.

10.8. Subject to 10.7 above, shown an
“outstanding” talent or aptitude for the
nature of the activity and/or
10.9. Played a major role or contributed
significantly to the success of the activity.
With regard to Academics, the Candidate must
have:
10.10. Recorded 8 or more points at
IGCSE in one sitting and in the first
attempt only based on the following
system:
o A* = 2 points
o A = 1 point
o 7 ICDL modules = 2
points
o 6 ICDL modules = 1
point.
10.11. Recorded 4 or more points at AS
level in one sitting and in the first attempt
based on the following system:
o A = 2 points
o B = 1 point
10.12. Subject to 10.10 or 10.11, achieved
outstanding performance at IGCSE
and/or AS level at St John’s and have a
sound academic record.

11. FULL COLOURS AWARD
CONDITIONS:
In general, the Candidate must have:
11.1. Reached U/18 age group and be in lower
6 and above.
11.2. Be eligible for, and have been awarded
Half-Colours, where applicable.
11.3. Satisfied all the conditions relevant to
receiving a Team Award, and Half-
Colours, but with greater emphasis on
loyalty to the school and team and on
individual excellence.
11.4. Achieved a similar award, or one equal in
standing, at another school.
With regard to sport, the Candidate must have:
11.5. Attained National representation at ‘A’
team level or the equivalent.
11.6. Subject to 11.5, have a satisfactory
disciplinary record.
11.7. In the case of Captain of the College First
Team, the award of Full Colours may be

made on the recommendation of the
First Team Coach.
With regard to Cultural Activities, Societies or
Clubs, the Candidate must have:
11.8. Achieved or been awarded multiple
Honours Awards by the National
Institute of the Allied Arts (N.I.A.A.) or
have won or been placed very highly in
competitions, festivals or tournaments
which are of a National context.
11.9. Subject to 11.8, displayed or shown
“outstanding” talent for the activity in
question and been one of few to have
achieved or displayed this level of ability.
11.10. Have an impeccable disciplinary
record.
With regard to Academics, the Candidate must
have:
11.11. Attained 12 points or more at
IGCSE in one sitting and at the first
attempt based on the following system:
o A* = 2 points
o A = 1 point.

o 7 ICDL modules = 2
points.
o 6 ICDL modules = 1
point.
11.12. Recorded 6 or more points at AS
level in one sitting and in the first attempt
based on the following system:
o A = 2 points
o B = 1 point
11.13. Achieved outstanding
performance at IGCSE and/or AS level
at St John’s and have a sound academic
record.
12. THREE FULL COLOURS
Holders of three Full Colours are entitled
to wear a special “Three Colours Tie”.
The tie must first be presented at an
Awards Assembly.
13. FIVE FULL COLOURS
13.1. Holders of five Full Colours in any
disciplines shall be awarded a famed
acknowledgement of their Colours
awards, inset with a white/gold lined
Colours badge.

13.2. Holders of five Full Colours which range
over the three disciplines of academics,
culture and sport shall be awarded a
special “Black Blazer” which shall be
provided by the College, in addition to a
framed acknowledgement of their
Colours awards, inset with a black/gold
lined Colours badge.
14. MAJOR AWARDS
(In ascending order of prominence.)
In the case of these awards, nominations
from staff must be made in writing, with
two seconders, and include a written
motivation for the consideration of the
award.
The Committee will make the final
decision as to the recipient(s) of each
award and recommend to the
Headmaster for final ratification ahead of
Speech Night.
14.1. SALVER FOR SERVICE TO THE
COLLEGE:

14.1.1. To be awarded to the student in the
Upper Six who has displayed the
highest level of unconditional
service to the College.
14.2. THE TAPIWANASHE BEN
SIYAKWAZI MEMORIAL TROPHY
14.2.1. To be awarded to the student in the
Upper Six who has demonstrated
the most commitment and
endeavour towards his academics,
cultural activities, sporting pursuits
or all three.
14.3. THE RYAN VICKERY GOLDEN
RAM AWARD
14.3.1. To be awarded to the student in the
Upper Six who has excelled across
the three disciplines of academics,
culture and sports. In other words,
the best “All Rounder” at the
College.
14.4. CRAIG RAPLPH MEMORIAL
TROPHY
14.4.1. To be awarded to the student in
Upper Six who has played games

with the most whole-hearted
enthusiasm, enjoyment,
determination and the greatest
sense of sportsmanship.
14.5. THE GARRS CHARGER TROPHY
14.5.1. To be awarded to the student in the
Upper Six who has shown
outstanding qualities of honour,
chivalry and valour: in other words
whose gentlemanly conduct (in the
true sense of the word) has
distinguished him above his peers.
14.5.2. His name inscribed on a board in
the Hall.
14.6. SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR
14.6.1. To be awarded on Speech Day to
the student(s) in the Upper Six
whose overall achievements on the
sporting field in either one or
several disciplines have established
him as the College’s top sportsman.
14.6.2. A comprehensive citation of the
recipient’s achievements and
contribution is to be written and
read out on Speech Night.

14.7. THE GPA COLLEGE
VALEDICTOIAN
14.7.1. To be awarded to the student in the
Upper Six who has emerged with
the highest overall GPA
assessment rating at the conclusion
of the October assessment period.
14.8. ATHENE CUP FOR CULTURAL
PERSON OF THE YEAR
14.8.1. To be awarded on Speech Night to
the student(s) in the Upper Six
whose contribution to the cultural
life of the College has been the
most outstanding, and/or to be
awarded to the student in the
Upper Six who has achieved, in
cultural endeavours, distinctions or
status, based on performance
above that of the level set for Full
Colours.
14.8.2. A comprehensive citation of the
recipient’s achievements and
contribution is to be written and
read out on Speech Night.

14.9. THE ST JOHN’S CROSS AWARD
14.9.1. To be awarded to the student in the
Upper Six who has achieved, in
sporting endeavours, distinctions
or status, based on performance
above that of the level set for Full
Colours.
14.9.2. A comprehensive citation of the
recipient’s achievements and
contribution is to be written and
read out on Speech Night and his
name inscribed on a board in the
Hall.
14.10. THE DUX OF COLLEGE:
14.10.1. To be awarded to the student of
the previous year who attained the
highest overall results in the
November public examinations of
Upper Six.
14.10.2. His name shall be inscribed on a
board in the hall.

14.11. THE JOHANNIAN AWARD:
14.11.1. This is to be considered the highest
and most distinguished award
presented by the College and is
awarded in recognition of an
individual who has had a longstanding
association with St John’s
and given of their time freely to
serve the interests of the College.
14.11.2. In general, the Candidate must be:
14.11.2.1. A member of the school
community, a parent, Board
Member, long-standing or senior
member of staff, or someone
engaged with the school on a
voluntary basis who has shown
considerable strength of character
and leadership and has given
outstanding service to the College
above and beyond the call of duty
or normal expectations.
14.11.3. Rarely is the Johannian Award
bestowed upon a current student,
unless in truly exceptional
circumstances.
14.11.4. The Headmaster and Deputy
Headmasters and/or the

Management of the College will
propose nominees for the award
annually at least four weeks prior to
Speech Night. A meeting will then
be held of the St John’s
Educational Trust where the
nominations will be considered
alongside any nomination made by
the Board, and the final awards
ratified.
14.11.5. The Committee will undertake to
write a comprehensive citation of
the recipient’s character and
contribution which will be read out
on Speech Night and the name of
the recipient inscribed on a board
in the Hall.
14.11.6. In addition a Johannian recipient
shall receive a framed copy of their
citation provided and prepared by
the College.
14.11.7. Gentlemen Johannian recipients
shall receive a “Johannian Tie”
whilst lady Johannian recipients
shall receive a silver pendant.

16. It is the duty of the Committee to meet
and ratify all nominations for:

16.2. The nominees must meet the criteria that

16.2.1. Have an impeccable disciplinary
record.
16.2.2. Will represent the College with
grace, dignity and honour.
16.2.3. Will not bring the name of the
College into disrepute.

17. While team awards are automatic subject
to participation, Half-Colours, Full
Colours and the St John’s Cross awards
represent very high standards of
achievement and should be awarded with
discretion.
17.1. It must be very clearly noted that all
awards can be withheld or retracted if
circumstances warrant.

Team Award
As outlined in the Constitution.
Half Colours
Must be a senior member who has
participated in a minimum of 8
senior debates.
Must possess a score average, over
his 5 best debates, of 75 points.
Must have represented the Senior
A Team at a minimum of 3
tournaments.

Full Colours
Must have won a major (at least 6
or more schools participate)
tournament, including but not
limited to the annual Tinashe
Rwodzi tournament, the annual
Arundel High School Charity
Dollar Debate Tournament, the

examinations.
Participate in the Inter-house

Be actively involved in more than
one musical discipline.

supporting role in a College
dramatic production and/or
Attained individual Honours at the
annual NIAA Speech and Drama
festival in at least one class.
Colours
As outlined in the Constitution and must
satisfy the criteria for achieving Team award
and Half Colours. In addition the Candidate
must:
Have played the definitive lead role
in a College dramatic production
where the role was demanding and
substantial and/or

Attained at least three individual
Honours at the annual NIAA
Speech and Drama festival.
Bridge
Team Award
As outlined in the Constitution.
Half-Colours
As outlined in the Constitution and in addition,
the candidate must come in the top four in the
Mashonaland Pairs competition,
Full-Colours
All the conditions for Half-Colours must be
met and in addition, the candidate must be
placed in the top four for two years in a row in
the Mashonaland Pairs competition,
cumulative since the beginning of L6.
Swimming
Team Award
As outlined in the Constitution.
Half-Colours
As outlined in the constitution and in addition,
the Candidate must:
