Chapter One<br />

PREAMBLE<br />

All awards made by St John’s College require<br />

adherence to a system of credibility <strong>and</strong><br />

transparency so that the integrity of these<br />

awards is ensured. It is vital, also, to follow a<br />

rigorous process to allow for consistency of<br />

awards over many generations in the College’s<br />

history. To this end, the <strong>Honours</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Awards</strong><br />

Committee is formally appointed <strong>and</strong><br />

constituted to carry out this important<br />

function. The structure of the Committee <strong>and</strong><br />

the process of awards is detailed herein.<br />

1. AUTHORITY AND DUE PROCESS<br />

1.1. The <strong>Honours</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Awards</strong> Committee of<br />

St John’s College is authorised, in terms<br />

of the St John’s Educational Trust<br />

<strong>Constitution</strong>, clause 2.4, to decide upon<br />

<strong>and</strong> grant awards <strong>and</strong> distinctions in the<br />

areas <strong>and</strong> disciplines listed under<br />

“Functions”, clause 3, below.<br />

1.2. The following proposals, subject to any<br />

amendments made by this Committee<br />

<strong>and</strong> approved by the Trustees, must be<br />

ratified at the beginning of each new<br />

calendar year.<br />

1.3. All new awards need to be approved by<br />

the Board.<br />

1.4. This <strong>Constitution</strong>, together with all<br />

minutes shall be kept in a separate book<br />

<strong>and</strong> made available to any member of<br />

staff on request.<br />

2. COMPOSITION OF THE<br />

COMMITTEE<br />

2.1. The Committee shall be composed of the<br />

following members:<br />

2.2. The Chairman: Deputy Headmaster,<br />

Student <strong>and</strong> Faculty Affairs<br />

2.3. The Secretary: appointed at the<br />

beginning of the year from within the<br />

Committee.<br />

2.4. The Deputy Headmasters.<br />

2.5. The four House Masters <strong>and</strong> the Sports<br />

Administrator.<br />

2.6. Any member of staff who in the opinion<br />

of the Committee, could make a<br />

significant contribution to the<br />

committee’s discussions, <strong>and</strong> who may<br />

be co-opted, with full voting powers, for<br />

any period deemed necessary by the<br />

Committee. Such members could include<br />

1st team coaches not included in the<br />

categories above.<br />

2.7. All recommendations for awards made<br />

by the Committee are to be approved by<br />

the Headmaster.<br />

3. FUNCTIONS OF THE COMMITTEE<br />

3.1. The functions of the <strong>Honours</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Awards</strong> Committee shall include:<br />

Major Trophies awarded on Speech<br />

Night, as follows, in order of<br />

significance:<br />

3.3.1. Salver for Service<br />

3.3.2. The Tapiwanashe Ben Siyakwazi<br />

Memorial Trophy<br />

3.3.3. The Ryan Vickery Golden Ram<br />

Award<br />

3.3.4. Craig Ralph Memorial Trophy<br />

3.3.5. Garrs Charger Trophy<br />

3.3.6. Sportsman of the Year<br />

4. QUORUM<br />

A quorum shall consist of two thirds of all<br />

eligible members, or the nearest number to the<br />

full Committee.<br />

5. VOTING<br />

5.1. All members present shall have one vote.<br />

5.2. Members not present may not vote by<br />

proxy.<br />

5.3. Members not present may not appoint<br />

deputies to vote in their place.<br />

5.4. Decisions shall be made on a simple<br />

majority vote.<br />

5.5. <strong>Constitution</strong>al amendments must have<br />

the approval of 75% of the eligible<br />

members of the Committee.<br />

6. MEETINGS<br />

6.1. Meetings shall be held at least once per<br />

term, or more frequently, if deemed<br />

necessary.<br />

6.2. Notice of meetings to appear in the<br />

termly calendar or be sent to members<br />

one week in advance by the Secretary.<br />

7. RECORDS<br />

7.1. The Secretary shall be responsible for:<br />

7.1.1. Keeping minutes of all meetings in<br />

a minute book.<br />

7.1.2. Issuing copies of the minutes to all<br />

members.<br />

7.1.3. Recording all awards issued in the<br />

<strong>Awards</strong> Book.<br />

8. RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERS<br />

Members shall be:<br />

8.1. Objective in their judgements.<br />

8.2. Become familiar with the teams <strong>and</strong><br />

clubs, <strong>and</strong> the pupils under consideration<br />

by watching as many fixtures <strong>and</strong><br />

activities as possible (in particular home<br />

fixtures.)<br />

Chapter Two<br />

<strong>Awards</strong> Criteria<br />

For any student to achieve an award they must<br />

ensure they have fulfilled the co-curricular<br />

equirements set out by the College <strong>and</strong> be<br />

seen to contribute fully to all aspects of the<br />

College<br />

9. TEAM AWARDS CONDITIONS:<br />

In General, the c<strong>and</strong>idate must have:<br />

9.1. Reached U/17 age group <strong>and</strong> be in Form<br />

4 <strong>and</strong> above.<br />

9.2. Displayed a high st<strong>and</strong>ard of<br />

sportsmanship <strong>and</strong> general behaviour.<br />

9.3. Not brought the College into disrepute,<br />

whether participating in the activity or<br />

not.<br />

9.4. Participated continually in the activity<br />

subsequent to the award.<br />

9.5. Shown a high level of dedication to the<br />

team or club.<br />

9.6. Displayed loyalty <strong>and</strong> dedication to the<br />

College.<br />

With regard to Sport, the C<strong>and</strong>idate must have:<br />

9.7. Recognition of regular representation of<br />

the College First Team:<br />

9.8. Played <strong>and</strong>/or attended 70% of matches<br />

<strong>and</strong> practices during season or year.<br />

9.9. If injured, ill, or unavoidably absent,<br />

played or attended 40% - 70% of<br />

9


matches <strong>and</strong> practices during the season<br />

or year.<br />

With regard to Cultural Activities, Societies <strong>and</strong><br />

Clubs, the C<strong>and</strong>idate must have:<br />

9.10. Met the requirements stipulated in 9.1. –<br />

9.6.<br />

9.11. Participated actively, including interschool<br />

participated, in the activity<br />

nominated.<br />

9.12. Attended 70% of fixtures, meetings <strong>and</strong><br />

practices during season or year.<br />

9.13. If injured, ill, or unavoidably absent,<br />

played or attended 40% - 70% of<br />

matches <strong>and</strong> practices during the season<br />

or year.<br />

Academic Team <strong>Awards</strong> have been<br />

discontinued.<br />

10. HALF COLOURS CONDITIONS:<br />

In general, the C<strong>and</strong>idate must have:<br />

10.1. Reached U/17 age group <strong>and</strong> be in form<br />

4 <strong>and</strong> above.<br />

10.2. Be eligible for, <strong>and</strong> have been awarded<br />

Team Award, where applicable.<br />

10.3. Satisfied all the conditions relevant to<br />

receiving a Team Award, but with greater<br />

emphasis on loyalty to the school <strong>and</strong><br />

team.<br />

10.4. Achieved a similar award, or one equal in<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ing, at another school.<br />

With regard to sport, the C<strong>and</strong>idate must have:<br />

10.5. Achieved Provincial representation in<br />

trials at ‘A’ team level or equivalent<br />

dependent on the nature of the sport.<br />

10.6. Subject to 10.5 above, shown that they<br />

are “outst<strong>and</strong>ing” in the context of the<br />

team, in relation to the strength of the<br />

team <strong>and</strong> their comparison to other<br />

schools <strong>and</strong> teams.<br />

With regard to Cultural Activities, Societies or<br />

Clubs, the C<strong>and</strong>idate must have:<br />

10.7. Attained special recognition or received<br />

special mention from an independent<br />

source, .i.e. an external adjudicator.<br />

10.8. Subject to 10.7 above, shown an<br />

“outst<strong>and</strong>ing” talent or aptitude for the<br />

nature of the activity <strong>and</strong>/or<br />

10.9. Played a major role or contributed<br />

significantly to the success of the activity.<br />

With regard to Academics, the C<strong>and</strong>idate must<br />

have:<br />

10.10. Recorded 8 or more points at<br />

IGCSE in one sitting <strong>and</strong> in the first<br />

attempt only based on the following<br />

system:<br />

o A* = 2 points<br />

o A = 1 point<br />

o 7 ICDL modules = 2<br />

points<br />

o 6 ICDL modules = 1<br />

point.<br />

10.11. Recorded 4 or more points at AS<br />

level in one sitting <strong>and</strong> in the first attempt<br />

based on the following system:<br />

o A = 2 points<br />

o B = 1 point<br />

10.12. Subject to 10.10 or 10.11, achieved<br />

outst<strong>and</strong>ing performance at IGCSE<br />

<strong>and</strong>/or AS level at St John’s <strong>and</strong> have a<br />

sound academic record.<br />

11. FULL COLOURS AWARD<br />

CONDITIONS:<br />

In general, the C<strong>and</strong>idate must have:<br />

11.1. Reached U/18 age group <strong>and</strong> be in lower<br />

6 <strong>and</strong> above.<br />

11.2. Be eligible for, <strong>and</strong> have been awarded<br />

Half-Colours, where applicable.<br />

11.3. Satisfied all the conditions relevant to<br />

receiving a Team Award, <strong>and</strong> Half-<br />

Colours, but with greater emphasis on<br />

loyalty to the school <strong>and</strong> team <strong>and</strong> on<br />

individual excellence.<br />

11.4. Achieved a similar award, or one equal in<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ing, at another school.<br />

With regard to sport, the C<strong>and</strong>idate must have:<br />

11.5. Attained National representation at ‘A’<br />

team level or the equivalent.<br />

11.6. Subject to 11.5, have a satisfactory<br />

disciplinary record.<br />

11.7. In the case of Captain of the College First<br />

Team, the award of Full Colours may be<br />

made on the recommendation of the<br />

First Team Coach.<br />

With regard to Cultural Activities, Societies or<br />

Clubs, the C<strong>and</strong>idate must have:<br />

11.8. Achieved or been awarded multiple<br />

<strong>Honours</strong> <strong>Awards</strong> by the National<br />

Institute of the Allied Arts (N.I.A.A.) or<br />

have won or been placed very highly in<br />

competitions, festivals or tournaments<br />

which are of a National context.<br />

11.9. Subject to 11.8, displayed or shown<br />

“outst<strong>and</strong>ing” talent for the activity in<br />

question <strong>and</strong> been one of few to have<br />

achieved or displayed this level of ability.<br />

11.10. Have an impeccable disciplinary<br />

record.<br />

With regard to Academics, the C<strong>and</strong>idate must<br />

have:<br />

11.11. Attained 12 points or more at<br />

IGCSE in one sitting <strong>and</strong> at the first<br />

attempt based on the following system:<br />

o A* = 2 points<br />

o A = 1 point.<br />

o 7 ICDL modules = 2<br />

points.<br />

o 6 ICDL modules = 1<br />

point.<br />

11.12. Recorded 6 or more points at AS<br />

level in one sitting <strong>and</strong> in the first attempt<br />

based on the following system:<br />

o A = 2 points<br />

o B = 1 point<br />

11.13. Achieved outst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

performance at IGCSE <strong>and</strong>/or AS level<br />

at St John’s <strong>and</strong> have a sound academic<br />

record.<br />

12. THREE FULL COLOURS<br />

Holders of three Full Colours are entitled<br />

to wear a special “Three Colours Tie”.<br />

The tie must first be presented at an<br />

<strong>Awards</strong> Assembly.<br />

13. FIVE FULL COLOURS<br />

13.1. Holders of five Full Colours in any<br />

disciplines shall be awarded a famed<br />

acknowledgement of their Colours<br />

awards, inset with a white/gold lined<br />

Colours badge.<br />

13.2. Holders of five Full Colours which range<br />

over the three disciplines of academics,<br />

culture <strong>and</strong> sport shall be awarded a<br />

special “Black Blazer” which shall be<br />

provided by the College, in addition to a<br />

framed acknowledgement of their<br />

Colours awards, inset with a black/gold<br />

lined Colours badge.<br />

14. MAJOR AWARDS<br />

(In ascending order of prominence.)<br />

In the case of these awards, nominations<br />

from staff must be made in writing, with<br />

two seconders, <strong>and</strong> include a written<br />

motivation for the consideration of the<br />

award.<br />

The Committee will make the final<br />

decision as to the recipient(s) of each<br />

award <strong>and</strong> recommend to the<br />

Headmaster for final ratification ahead of<br />

Speech Night.<br />

14.1. SALVER FOR SERVICE TO THE<br />

COLLEGE:<br />

14.1.1. To be awarded to the student in the<br />

Upper Six who has displayed the<br />

highest level of unconditional<br />

service to the College.<br />

14.2. THE TAPIWANASHE BEN<br />

SIYAKWAZI MEMORIAL TROPHY<br />

14.2.1. To be awarded to the student in the<br />

Upper Six who has demonstrated<br />

the most commitment <strong>and</strong><br />

endeavour towards his academics,<br />

cultural activities, sporting pursuits<br />

or all three.<br />

14.3. THE RYAN VICKERY GOLDEN<br />

RAM AWARD<br />

14.3.1. To be awarded to the student in the<br />

Upper Six who has excelled across<br />

the three disciplines of academics,<br />

culture <strong>and</strong> sports. In other words,<br />

the best “All Rounder” at the<br />

College.<br />

14.4. CRAIG RAPLPH MEMORIAL<br />

TROPHY<br />

14.4.1. To be awarded to the student in<br />

Upper Six who has played games<br />

with the most whole-hearted<br />

enthusiasm, enjoyment,<br />

determination <strong>and</strong> the greatest<br />

sense of sportsmanship.<br />

14.5. THE GARRS CHARGER TROPHY<br />

14.5.1. To be awarded to the student in the<br />

Upper Six who has shown<br />

outst<strong>and</strong>ing qualities of honour,<br />

chivalry <strong>and</strong> valour: in other words<br />

whose gentlemanly conduct (in the<br />

true sense of the word) has<br />

distinguished him above his peers.<br />

14.5.2. His name inscribed on a board in<br />

the Hall.<br />

14.6. SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR<br />

14.6.1. To be awarded on Speech Day to<br />

the student(s) in the Upper Six<br />

whose overall achievements on the<br />

sporting field in either one or<br />

several disciplines have established<br />

him as the College’s top sportsman.<br />

14.6.2. A comprehensive citation of the<br />

recipient’s achievements <strong>and</strong><br />

contribution is to be written <strong>and</strong><br />

read out on Speech Night.<br />

14.7. THE GPA COLLEGE<br />

VALEDICTOIAN<br />

14.7.1. To be awarded to the student in the<br />

Upper Six who has emerged with<br />

the highest overall GPA<br />

assessment rating at the conclusion<br />

of the October assessment period.<br />

14.8. ATHENE CUP FOR CULTURAL<br />

PERSON OF THE YEAR<br />

14.8.1. To be awarded on Speech Night to<br />

the student(s) in the Upper Six<br />

whose contribution to the cultural<br />

life of the College has been the<br />

most outst<strong>and</strong>ing, <strong>and</strong>/or to be<br />

awarded to the student in the<br />

Upper Six who has achieved, in<br />

cultural endeavours, distinctions or<br />

status, based on performance<br />

above that of the level set for Full<br />

Colours.<br />

14.8.2. A comprehensive citation of the<br />

recipient’s achievements <strong>and</strong><br />

contribution is to be written <strong>and</strong><br />

read out on Speech Night.<br />

14.9. THE ST JOHN’S CROSS AWARD<br />

14.9.1. To be awarded to the student in the<br />

Upper Six who has achieved, in<br />

sporting endeavours, distinctions<br />

or status, based on performance<br />

above that of the level set for Full<br />

Colours.<br />

14.9.2. A comprehensive citation of the<br />

recipient’s achievements <strong>and</strong><br />

contribution is to be written <strong>and</strong><br />

read out on Speech Night <strong>and</strong> his<br />

name inscribed on a board in the<br />

Hall.<br />

14.10. THE DUX OF COLLEGE:<br />

14.10.1. To be awarded to the student of<br />

the previous year who attained the<br />

highest overall results in the<br />

November public examinations of<br />

Upper Six.<br />

14.10.2. His name shall be inscribed on a<br />

board in the hall.<br />

14.11. THE JOHANNIAN AWARD:<br />

14.11.1. This is to be considered the highest<br />

<strong>and</strong> most distinguished award<br />

presented by the College <strong>and</strong> is<br />

awarded in recognition of an<br />

individual who has had a longst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

association with St John’s<br />

<strong>and</strong> given of their time freely to<br />

serve the interests of the College.<br />

14.11.2. In general, the C<strong>and</strong>idate must be:<br />

14.11.2.1. A member of the school<br />

community, a parent, Board<br />

Member, long-st<strong>and</strong>ing or senior<br />

member of staff, or someone<br />

engaged with the school on a<br />

voluntary basis who has shown<br />

considerable strength of character<br />

<strong>and</strong> leadership <strong>and</strong> has given<br />

outst<strong>and</strong>ing service to the College<br />

above <strong>and</strong> beyond the call of duty<br />

or normal expectations.<br />

14.11.3. Rarely is the Johannian Award<br />

bestowed upon a current student,<br />

unless in truly exceptional<br />

circumstances.<br />

14.11.4. The Headmaster <strong>and</strong> Deputy<br />

Headmasters <strong>and</strong>/or the<br />

Management of the College will<br />

propose nominees for the award<br />

annually at least four weeks prior to<br />

Speech Night. A meeting will then<br />

be held of the St John’s<br />

Educational Trust where the<br />

nominations will be considered<br />

alongside any nomination made by<br />

the Board, <strong>and</strong> the final awards<br />

ratified.<br />

14.11.5. The Committee will undertake to<br />

write a comprehensive citation of<br />

the recipient’s character <strong>and</strong><br />

contribution which will be read out<br />

on Speech Night <strong>and</strong> the name of<br />

the recipient inscribed on a board<br />

in the Hall.<br />

14.11.6. In addition a Johannian recipient<br />

shall receive a framed copy of their<br />

citation provided <strong>and</strong> prepared by<br />

the College.<br />

14.11.7. Gentlemen Johannian recipients<br />

shall receive a “Johannian Tie”<br />

whilst lady Johannian recipients<br />

shall receive a silver pendant.<br />

16. It is the duty of the Committee to meet<br />

<strong>and</strong> ratify all nominations for:<br />

16.1.1. 1 st Team Captains<br />

16.1.2. Presidents of Societies<br />

16.1.3. Heads of Houses<br />

16.2. The nominees must meet the criteria that<br />

they:<br />

16.2.1. Have an impeccable disciplinary<br />

record.<br />

16.2.2. Will represent the College with<br />

grace, dignity <strong>and</strong> honour.<br />

16.2.3. Will not bring the name of the<br />

College into disrepute.<br />

Half Colours<br />

Must be a senior member who has<br />

participated in a minimum of 8<br />

senior debates.<br />

Must possess a score average, over<br />

his 5 best debates, of 75 points.<br />

Must have represented the Senior<br />

A Team at a minimum of 3<br />

tournaments.<br />

Must have won a major (at least 6<br />

or more schools participate)<br />

tournament, including but not<br />

limited to the annual Tinashe<br />
