A Journey to Softness
In Search of Feel and Connection with the Horse
Internationally acclaimed horse trainer MARK RASHID
shares and analyzes the remarkable events, quiet moments,
and humbling stumbling blocks that—looking back—he
can identify as significant in his personal journey to finding
“softness” with both horses and people. “Softness,” via what
many in the horse world today might refer to as “feel,” begins,
Rashid says, with one simple truth: “It’s not about what we
do that starts us on the path to softness, but rather, it’s what
we don’t do.” Softness is having the sensitivity we need in
order to feel when and if the horse tries to “give.” It is about
develping the kind of awareness and feel it takes to know
when we are working against our horses, rather than with
them. In these forthright stories, readers get a glimpse of a
life that has produced a man known for his ability to solve
difficult problems with communication rather than force, as
well as methods and techniques gleaned from decades of
work with horses, horse people, and martial artists.
MARK RASHID met an “old man” when he was 10
who taught him to work with horses, not against them, and
to listen to what horses are trying to say. Rashid eventually
decided to study the martial art of aikido as a way to improve
his horsemanship, and now teaches the “way of harmony”
in the local dojo. It is his combination of martial arts with
horsemanship that has enabled him to communicate new
ways of connecting with horses, methods spread throughout
the world via his many bestselling books and DVDs
The Art of Liberty Training for Horses
Attain New Levels of Leadership, Unity, Feel,
Engagement, and Purpose in All That You Do
with Your Horse
“True liberty is much more than simply removing
equipment and stepping outside the pen or arena,”
says horse trainer JONATHAN FIELD. “It is moving
with your horse, communicating only with intention,
and creating a seamless, smooth, and rhythmic
dance....It’s one of the most fun things you’ll ever do.”
In this beautiful book, richly illustrated with
color photographs taken on Field’s spectacular
ranch in British Columbia, readers learn how
to use liberty exercises to develop a better
“feel,” reward the horse sooner, and time their aids just right to
ensure they get the response they want. The result is improved
partnership and performance in every discipline, whether
ranching, riding for pleasure, or competing.
JONATHAN FIELD is a highly acclaimed natural
horseman who has helped thousands of people achieve amazing
results with horses through his teaching. His unique methods
combined with his ability to instruct and inspire are why Field’s
star is shining bright in the equine industry. Each year, Field, his
wife Angie, and their sons Weston and Mason, spend half the year
touring and teaching across North America. The rest of the year,
Field manages two teaching facilities: the Field Horsemanship
Center in Abbotsford and the James Creek Ranch in Merritt,
British Columbia. In addition to live appearances at clinics, expos,
and seminars, and hosting intensive camp programs at his own
facilities, Field regularly writes articles for equestrian publications
and has produced a home-study DVD course about horse training
(jonathanfield.net).
