20 Years Memento of International Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Paddling. "Our Stories"
In 1996 Dr. Don McKenzie initiated a Sports Medicine research project to explore whether intense upper body exercise was beneficial or risky for women undergoing breast cancer treatment following a cancer diagnosis. The outcome of this study showed the beneficial effects of exercise both in reducing lymphadema but also in creating a sense of purpose and wellbeing. The women from that study went on to form the first breast cancer dragon boat paddling team Abreast In A Boat. Now 20 years later there are over 200 teams and 150 of those teams are members of the International Breast Cancer Paddlers's Commission. The iBCPC promotes breast cancer survivorship dragon boat paddling internationally. This book shares the experiences of many of those teams who joined a 'paddling party' to celebrate this wonderful anniversary and shared their team experiences in this book.
