thanks to dedicated educators who realize the importance<br />

of teaching with and about the media.<br />

For my part, I continue to provide professional<br />

development (teacher training) to both Common<br />

Core and non-CCSS states. Today’s educators must<br />

understand why it is important not only to incorporate<br />

popular culture and media messages in instruction,<br />

but also how to help young people deconstruct,<br />

analyze and create media.<br />

A new “Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy” now positions<br />

CREATING at the top of the higher order<br />

thinking skills. (http://edorigami.wikispaces.com/<br />

Bloom%27s+-+Creating) Writer Andrew Churches<br />

lists many media products as potential production<br />

examples: filming, animating, blogging, mixing,<br />

re-mixing, podcasting, directing, broadcasting. 9<br />

In 2014, National Media Arts Standards were unveiled,<br />

pdf) thus adding more weight to the importance of<br />

teaching media creation and analysis both inside and<br />

outside of the traditional arts classrooms.<br />

The Future Workskills 2020 (http://www.iftf.<br />

org/futureworkskills/) report recognizes the new<br />

media ecology in which we live and recommends a<br />

“new media literacy” be taught. 10<br />

The annual Horizon K-12 Report, (http://k12.<br />

wiki.nmc.org/) which also looks at world trends, has<br />

consistently recommended that educators dedicate<br />

time to teaching digital media literacy skills.<br />

The National Board of Professional Teaching<br />

Standards, which certifies teachers nationwide,<br />

Standards.pdf) recently revised its early childhood,<br />

middle and high school ELA standards by strengthening<br />

the verbiage around teaching viewing and visual<br />

literacy:<br />
