actually pulled the rope, had just<br />
promised he would save him.<br />
(pause)<br />
Papa’s last words were, “Be good to<br />
Mania. She’s spoiled but she has a<br />
good heart.” We always fought, so<br />
he had to make me promise...<br />
Klara turns to face Mundek. They look into each other’s eyes<br />
for a few beats.<br />
KLARA (cont’d)<br />
So...what can we take with us?<br />
Mundek goes to a bed, still usable.<br />
MUNDEK<br />
If we take this apart, we could get<br />
it down.<br />
Mundek goes to a small kerosene stove and lifts it, testing<br />
its weight.<br />

notebooks and crayons tumbled out. A children’s book of<br />
HANSEL AND GRETEL. Mundek crouches as he turns the items<br />
around in his hand.<br />
Klara returns to the tray of cups and saucers and lifts it.<br />
