SINAI
Special Events in January
When we gather in Shabbat worship,
we say these words together:
May our eyes and minds always be open so that we
may see and welcome all truth, whether shining from
the wisdom of ancient revelations or reaching us
through the prophets of our own time.
There is no doubt that the Reverend Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., is a prophet of our own time.
And there is no doubt that Chicago Sinai
Congregation works to keep alive the vision and
the dream of Dr. King in many ways.
This month of January is a special time of
dedication to Dr. King’s memory. Through
learning, worship, and action we will engage in the
lessons and work so important to Dr. King.
Especially given all that is happening in Chicago
today, we need to learn from Dr. King—and those
who follow in his footsteps—in order to figure out
a just and affirming way forward for our city.
We begin our remembrances with a special
Shabbat service on Friday, January 15. Again, we
will welcome Dr. Keith Hampton and the “Sinai
Ensemble” of the Chicago Community Chorus [of
which Dr. Hampton is founder and artistic
director]. They will enhance our service by singing
a variety of music borne of the African-American
experience; furthermore, our 3rd and 4th grade
students will be leading the worship, which will
feature key highlight from Dr. King’s teachings.
On Sunday, January 17, we will be keeping alive
Dr. King’s legacy through a special opportunity to
pair study with action. During our Make Yourself
More hour [from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.], we will
first read together some of Dr. Kings most
important essays, and then have an opportunity to
learn from two current activists about their work in
Chicago: Jamie Kalven of the Invisible Institute,
who will speak about the power of the press in
working for civil rights; and Jonathan Peck, who
will be sharing his experience in the field of
Restorative Justice. It should be a wonderful
morning of learning and inspiration.
To bring all our commemorations to a close, we
will share our annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Family
Service on Sunday, January 24 at 11:00 a.m. In
addition to some special music Scott Kumer has
prepared for this event [you don’t want to miss it!],
a highlight will be our 8th grade students bringing
to life the famous “I Have a Dream” address,
delivered at the March for Jobs & Justice in
Washington, D.C.
In these ways, we will spend special time focused
on learning the legacies of our past. And then, as
Rabbi Tarfon taught, the task will be on us to get
to work here in our hometown as we pave a better
road to Justice and Truth for all.
