James Cropper - Making Poppies
For nearly forty years, the James Cropper mill in Cumbria
has been producing quality red and green paper to turn
into remembrance poppies, and recently they showcased
their work on the BBC’s One Show.
Playing an influential role in the local economy, the
Burneside Mill, which was founded in 1845, is renowned
for creating specialist products including printing, writing,
watermarked and bespoke papers.
The development of paper for poppies is a carefully
crafted and intricate process, with the Burneside Mill
ensuring the poppies made are the best that they can be.
Colour samples are taken from the real thing to ascertain
that the paper used is as authentic and true to life as
possible. It is also important that the colour does not rub
off onto clothing in wet weather, and that the original
shape is retained.
With Remembrance Sunday in November, the mill was
in full production, with the red and green paper
made contributing to the creation of 40,000,000 poppies.
