Valve terminal replaces PLC
Terminal intelligence
Until a few years ago, manual and visual random sample inspections of industrial
components were often suffi cient. However, as technology has advanced, so too have
the requirements with respect to technical solutions – and system controllers. In a machine
for the visual inspection of turned parts the valve terminal CPX from Festo now performs
the tasks of the PLC.

In the specially constructed system for
the testing of precision turned parts, the
Festo valve terminal CPX-CEC-C1 handles
all of the functions of a complete PLC.
It controls pneumatic and electric axes
and positions the turned parts correctly
so that a full surface inspection
can be carried out using a camera.
This complete solution from Festo is a
high-performance unit consisting of the
intelligent valve terminal CPX, controller
CMMS, camera SBO and the servo motor
EMMS with slide EGSL. Their interaction
allows very fast and precise testing of
the turned parts in a three-second cycle.
Perfect mirror image
Before the visual inspection, the turned
part is fi rst cleaned using a brush and
vacuum. A conical, tapered mirror then
travels through the inside of the part to
be inspected and sends the image information
to the camera. The movement is
performed by a mini slide EGSL, actuated
by a servo motor EMMS. If faults such
as cracks or grooves are found, the intelligent
valve terminal issues the command
to reject the part at the end of the
inspection process.
Effi ciency thanks to a complete solution
The subsequent external inspection is
carried out using a conical mirror. The
component is drawn in through an opening
in the mirror, which opens out at the
top, by EMMS and EGSL. A red LED ring
light provides optimum contrast for the
camera at the top. The inspection system
also detects the position of the turned
part, which was originally fed unoriented
from the screw conveyor. In the next
and fi nal step, the machine separates
the good parts from the faulty parts.
The lack of an additional PLC offers
advantages with regard to development,
commissioning and maintenance. This
innovative, complete system solution
from Festo for the inspection of turned
parts is based on a standardised control
concept. On the valve terminal CPX-CEC-
C1, the individual components demonstrate
their unique characteristics such
as high performance, excellent fl exibility
and durability. In addition, as the control
components come from a single source,
programming times are shorter and
service is fast and reliable.
