Volunteers in Medicine Clinic provides free
medical, dental and mental health care to
low-income individuals who live or work
on Hilton Head and Daufuskie Islands.
The students serve as interpreters during
patient visits, take vital signs and triage
patients, assist doctors during medical
procedures, and help file patient charts.
“It is an incredible blessing to have the
resources to pursue higher education--and
our duty to share the knowledge attained
with those unable to do so themselves--
be it lack of resources, medical reasons,
immigration status, or lack of opportunity,”
Elle. “My SSLP was a formative affirmation
into how healthcare can answer some
of the problems low-income uninsured
residents can face in some of the
toughest days of their lives,” Daniel.

Casa Juan Diego is a Catholic Worker
House of Hospitality, which in addition
to providing room and board to guests,
also provides assistance by offering job
searches, distributing food and clothing,
and providing free medical and dental
care. Students assist guests with their
daily needs, participate in household
duties, provide transportation for guests
to medical appointments, and help guests
find employment and affordable housing.
“Service can be tough, demanding, and
dirty; but at the end of the day, it is
good,” King. “Living in the same house
as the people I served allowed me to
literally serve my next-door neighbors and
come to know and love them almost as
if they were my own family,” Kathleen.

Casa de Esperanza de los Ninos provides
residential, medical and psychological
care for children who have experienced
crisis due to abuse, neglect or HIV.
The student works as a caregiver for
foster children, which includes bathing,
diapering, disciplining, entertaining, and
feeding. “Facing childhood injustices
was challenging, but the relationships I
formed with the children showed me the
positive impact one person can make
on the future of a child through simple
acts of love and attention,” Mallory.

Terry Reilly Health Services is a non-profit
organization that provides healthcare to all.
The student assists with the work of the clinic
as well as works with La Adelita Head Start,
which offers pre-kindergarten education,
family advocacy, health and nutrition
education, and social services coordination
to low-income or migrant families.
